Death of Mr. Geo. Oakley - Many of our readers in Galt and elsewhere will read with deep regret the above heading. As Bugle-Major of the 29th Battalion, when the companies put in their week's drill a few years ago in our town, Mr. Oakley was known to a good many of our townspeople, and his jolly appearance, and his equally jolly manner, made friends of every one he met. As true a Briton as ever drew breath, he was always foremost in every patriotic move, and when duty called him into the ranks, no volunteer ever took his place with a happier heart or a merrier countenance, than the big-hearted Bugle-Major of the 29th. We copy the following particulars of his death from the Berlin Telegraph - "We sincerely regret to be called upon the week to record the death of Mr. George Oakley, of Crosshill, which took place at his residence on Saturday evening last. He had been unwell for some months past, the result, we believe, of sunstroke received last summer, but no serious apprehension of a fatal termination were entertained. Of last his friends thought he was improving in health, but alas! for human calculations, while engaged in sewing the buttons upon a vest on Saturday evening, he suddenly fell forward and expired without a groan. Mr. Oakley, or "Royal George" as he was wont to style himself, had been a resident of Crosshill for the past twenty-two years, following the combined occupation of auctioneer, hotel-keeper and tailor, and was widely known and esteemed for his many excellent qualities of both head and heart. His genial countenance, which, even under the most trying circumstances, was always radiant with good humor will be sadly missed in the community - and few men have "paid the debt of nature" for whom the public have expressed more real regret. Being naturally of a more than ordinarily generous and hospitable disposition, Mr. Oakley made for himself hosts of friends whose good will and esteem he always retained. In him the poor and needy ever found a generous friend, ready to alleviate their gatherings so far as he was able. At the time of his death, and for many years previously, Mr. Oakley held the office of Secretary Treasurer to the Wellesley Agricultural Society, the duties of which he performed with commendable efficiency and fidelity. His age was 59 years. "Peace to his ashes.""

"The militiamen of Waterloo in those days were big men in every way. Capt. Barbour, of the Crosshill Company, was over 6 feet 5 inches, and his right hand man stood over 6 feet 6 inches, while the Bugle-Major, Geo. Oakley, at one time a gunner in the Royal Artillery, was so stout that it was said he had to have a rifle sling sewn to his belt to encompass his aldermanic breadbasket."
