    Notes:

Death of Mr. Wm. Perrin, Sr., of Roseville

The intelligence of the death of this sturdy son of England, last Thursday, will cause his many friends sincere regret. Possessed of strong bodily health he had exceeded his 75th year, and when last in Galt, looked still the strong man he had been, but age had sapped his vitality, and without a great deal of suffering, he passed quietly to his rest.

Mr. Perrin was born in Essex, England, 8th June, 1813 and came to Canada in 1834, settling first in Hamilton, where he lived for about nine years, during which time he took part in the suppression of the McKenzie rebellion. In 1839 he married Miss Newstead, sister of Mr. John Newstead, of Roseville, who still survives him, and after living about four years on Hamilton Mountain, he took up land near Roseville, on which he resided until about 14y years ago, when he retired, moved into the village, and enjoyed the rest and ease his active life so justly entitled him to. Mr. Perrin was possessed of a quaint, original mind, combined with great geniality of heart, and in the quiet details of life or in the public discussion of questions, brought to bear an excellent humor and judgement.

His family consisted of five sons and two daughters, all of whom are yet living, viz: - Mr. James Perrin, of Listowel; Messrs. John and William Perrin, egg-dealers, Newmarket; Mr. Joseph Perrin, who resides on the homestead; and Mr. Benjamin Perrin, of Berlin; Mrs. John Woods, of Berlin; and Mrs. Nathan Woods, of Waterloo, near Mannheim.

Mr. Perrin's funeral took place on Sabbath morning last to Roseville Cemetery, his old friends and acquaintances attending his remains to their last resting place in large numbers.

    ____________

    THE OLD PERRIN HOMESTEAD.

While in this neighborhood it was my pleasure to once more enter the portals of this old and familiar home- stead. Many a time I had enjoyed its hospitality nearly forty years ago, when its founders were yet in the prime of life. But on this occasion I found that they had years ago been called from the earthly home which they had made, possibly through years of incessant toil. The genial and devoted father of this venerable homestead, William Perrin, was well and popularly known throughout a wide section. He was born in Saffron Walden, Essex County, England, June 9.b, 1813. At the age of twenty-one years he came to Canada, settling at Hamilton, in 1834. As a royalist he took part in some of the conflicts incident to the rebellion of 1837-38, and won distinction for bravery as an artilleryist. He was an eye witness of the McKenzie fight and burning of the craft Caroline, and many other thrilling events connected with the difficulty of that time. In 1835 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Newstead. They had seven children, John and Joseph are the only members of the family now living in this neighborhood. The father died May 9th, 1889, aged 75 years and 11 months. The mother followed him on Sept. 30, 1895, aged 78 years, 3 monthe and 27 days.

Joseph, one of the sons, occupies the old homestead. He was born here May 6, 1849, and was married to Miss Mary Willetts, Dec. 29, 1873. She was born May 9, 1849. They have been blessed with eight children, all of whom are living, and all but two have reached the age of responsibility and are doing well. The old stone house is still a fresh reminder of days long since gone by, and, save considerable rebuilding of the barn, the place has much the same appearance it had in the days of yore, and Joseph, though apparently not as young as he used to be, is still the very image of good nature and contentment. While there I noticed some very fine swine and other stock. The constant clearing op of the woodland for so many years has rendered the view from here of rural landscape scenery the most extensive and beautiful I have yet beheld in all my travelling experience. As far as the eye can see are magnificently improved farms and cozy hamlet.

Within easy sight of the village is the splendid two hundred-acre farm of Mr. John Perrin, who has proved to be one of the most practical and successful farmers in North Dumfries Look where you will over his large estate and you will see evidence of a model farm. There is not a dilapidated panel of fence or an unsightly building on the place. The barn is one of the largest and highest in the county, and is equipped with all the latest mechanical appliances for unloading hay, grain, etc. in the quickest possible time. A commodious shed about two hundred feet long, extends from the barn to the house. In this building are the pig sties, and wherein during the winter are stored the implements, wagons, buggies, etc. Along its entire length is a substantial board sidewalk and over which the roof projects, thus enabling any member of the family or employee to reach the barn or house during inclement weather without getting wet or muddy shoes. The house is a splendid structure of cut stone, the interior being conveniently laid out with large airy rooms, and all of elegant hard wood finish. This property was originally purchased for $2,000, is now valued at $13,000. In the stables I noticed a large herd of choice export steers ready for shipment, and a Lumber of exceedingly fine swine. Mr. Perrin also produces thousands of bushels of grain annually. That he has been eminently successful so far in life there is proof in the fact of his having accumulated this valuable piece of property through his own management and energy.

    Residence:
This one and a half storey house originally had cedar roof shingles, although they are now green shingles, and it has brown clapboard siding. There is a small porch facing the road, and the windows are 2 over 2 with a yellow and green trim. It was the retirement home of William Perrin and his wife.

In the early 1900's it was believed this house was haunted. People in the village would often tell stories of how former owners heard strange noises in the house, such as heavy chains dragging. One woman believed that a ghost would go into her children's rooms and remove their blankets at night. According to the villagers', the house became haunted after an elderly woman died in the house. It was reported that she had lost her mind. Two other prominent owners of this house were William Perrin, who was the former road commissioner for the village; and Gordon Fried, who was an active member of the Roseville community.
