    ______________________________

Jacob Zeigler was the eldest son of Abraham and Elizabeth Kolb, and was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., April 12, 1832, about two miles cast of Berlin (now Kitchener). On July 5, 1857, he was united in marriage to Maria, daughter of Elias and Maria (Polly Clemmens) Bowman. To this union were born seven children; Leah, Abram, Elias, Polly (deceased), Simon (deceased), Aaron, and Titus.

He united with the Mennonite Church in early youth, and was a devoted member throughout his long life, being interested and active in all of the work of the Church. In 1875 he was ordained to the office of deacon, in which capacity be served faithfully so long as health and strength permitted. He was a strong supporter and faithful worker in the early Sunday school activities of the Church, having been one of the organizers of the first permanent Sunday schools among our people in Waterloo county. For many years he was the superintendent of the Breslau Mennonite Sunday school. At a time when the Church's attitude toward special and continued efforts for the ingathering of the young people and others was undecided, Brother Kolb was among those who were strongly in favor of such work. Through the encouragement of such brethren efforts were put forth which resulted in a large addition to the active membership of the church. In the following years of increased activities in the Church in behalf of the Sunday schools, Young people's meetings and mission work, Brother Kolb manifested the greatest interest and gave his heartiest support and encouragement.

A number of years ago Bro. Kolb was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis which partly disabled him and from which he never entirely recovered. However, he continued his work in the Church and in his home life until a few years ago when growing infirmity of mind and body, due to recurrent attacks of paralysis, rendered him unable to continue his wonted activities. He keenly realized the weakening of his powers and expressed regret that he was no longer able to take up the duties of his work in the Church, but was always ready to express his joy in the service of the Master and give testimony of his hope in the Lord and in His promises. His strength gradually failed until on June 3, 1919, at the home of his son-in-law, Bro. Moses B. Betzner, where he and his companion had made their home, he calmly fell asleep. He reached the ripe old age of 87 y. 1 m. 21 d.

He lived in matrimony for nearly 62 years, and his aged companion, with four sons and one daughter and twelve grandchildren survive. Besides these children there were two adopted boys, John Zeigler and John Carcy, and two adopted girls, Fannie (Beasley) Pender and Allie (Stengle) Cutter, who with the rest of the family mourn the loss of one who was as a faithful, loving father to them. Brother Kolb is also survived by an aged brother, Menno S. Kolb of Wetaskewin, Alberta, and two aged sisters, Mrs. Nancy Kolb Shantz of Kitchener, Ont., and Mrs. Mary Ann Hoffman of Avondale, Mich. Funeral services were held on the 8th of June. Brother Samuel Bowman conducted the services at the home. At the church at Kitchener, where interment was made, the services were conducted by the Brethren, Jonas Snyder and S. F. Coffman. Texts, Psa. 39: 4; Heb. 4: 9. A large assembly of people testified of the esteem in which the aged servant of the Lord was held and of the sympathy extended toward the bereaved family. Another life has ended on earth and awaits the revelation of the sons of God at the day of the Lord.

    __________________________

Kolb.-Maria Bowman Kolb, second daughter and sixth child of the late Elias and Polly (Clemens) Bowman, was born near Breslau, Ontario, on the old Bowman homestead now occupied by Simon Baer, on Dec. 8, 1839; died at her home now occupied by her youngest son Titus, near Kitchener, Ont., May 17, 1921. Of a family of fourteen children, she was the last survivor, and had also reached the highest age, having attained the ripe age of 81 y. 5 m. 7 d. She united with the Mennonite Church in her early years, and was a faithful member until death. On July 5, 1857, she was married to Jacob Ziegler Kolb, who for forty-five years was deacon in the Mennonite Church at Kitchener and Breslau, and who predeceased her on June 3, 1919, at the ripe age of over 87 years, thus having enjoyed with him over 63 years of married life. Of their seven children, five survive, Polly and Simon having died when but four and two years old respectively. Those living are Leah (Mrs. Moses B. Betzner), Abram B., Elias B., Aaron C., and Titus L. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 69 nieces and nephews. During all her busy life she was a devoted follower of the Lord, and a loyal companion and helpmeet to her husband whose activities in his office as deacon, and organizer and superintendent of a number of Sunday schools in Waterloo county, are well remembered by a host of friends. Her help and counsel in her husband's Church work were of inestimable value to him, and her pleasant manner and winsome ways endeared her to all with whom she came into contact. She always exercised a particularly charitable spirit toward those who had in some way met with misfortune, and in addition to her own family she also reared five other children, John Ziegler, Fanny Beasley Pender, Allie Stengel, George Wenger, and John Carey; besides providing a home for her aged Uncle, Abraham Clemens, and a friendless man, Karl Rose, who lost his family shortly after arriving from Germany. Her sympathetic ministrations will be remembered by many throughout the neighborhood in which she lived so long, because, like Dorcas of old, of the "good works which she did," these being but the spontaneous outpouring of a heart which overflowed with compassion and beneficence. Though in frail health for some years prior to her last illness, having suffered from no less than four paralytic strokes, she retained her mental faculties to a remarkable degree for one of her age, and corresponded with her absent children regularly until within about a month of her death. She was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. The large church was crowded to capacity by the many friends who came to pay a last tribute of respect to an old mother in Israel who had befriended so many during her active years. Funeral services were conducted by Oscar Burkholder, assisted at the home by M. H. Shantz, and at the church by U. K. Weber. Text, Gal. 1: 9, 10, supported by Psa. 37: 3, 27; Matt. 6: 35; I Thes. 5: 15. Mother Kolb was very fond of singing, a gift enjoyed also by her husband, and transmitted to their children. Her favorite hymn, "Oh, sing to me of Heaven," which she had marked in her hymnal with the request that it be sung at her funeral, together with "Hark! From the Tomb a Doleful Sound," "Shall We Meet?" "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break," "We Are Going Down the Valley," and others, were used at the funeral services.

WENGER - On the 5th of January 1896, at the home of her oldest son, Deacon J.Z. Kolb, near Berlin, Ont., of the infirmities of old age, Sister Elizabeth, wife of Bro. Jonas Wenger, aged 84 years, 5 days. Sister Wenger was born in the 31st of December 1811 near Skippack, Montgomery Co., Pa., and in the year 1816 she emigrated with her parents, Bro. and Sister Dilman and Kate (Schwartz) Ziegler to the then wilds of Upper Canada. On the 2nd of Nov. 1829 she was united in matrimony to Bro. Abraham Kolb who died in 1874. This union was blessed with four sons and three daughters, all of whom except one son are still living. In 1881 she was married to Bro. Jonas Wenger, who now survives her. She also leaves 44 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Sister Wenger was a devoted Christian and a faithful, zealous worker in the Mennonite church since her youth. She saw our congregations in Canada grow from their organization to the present time and always took deep interest in religious work. In homes where sickness and sorrow prevailed she was ever ready to render substantial aid and administer comfort, and when death came to her at last, after a long and busy life, she passed away peacefully and quietly, gathered as the shock of grain, fully ripened, into the heavenly Master's garner. Her remains were laid to rest on the 8th in the C. Eby cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services by Elias Weber at the house and by Noah Stauffer and Isaac Wambold at the meeting house.

    _____________

    Joseph Y. Shantz.

Under the hospitable roof of this pioneer citizen I spent a few pleasant hours. He is one of the specimens of noble manhood, through whose instrumentality vast sections of the wilds of Western Canada have been made to blossom as the rose. He was born July 10th, 1815. His wife, nee Elizabeth Stauffer, was born near Doon, in Waterloo township, January 10th, 1820. They were married on May 15th, 1838, and now live a quiet and retired life on the old homestead, which through years of hard toil and privations they accumulated that in after years they and their offspring might enjoy. That they have faithfully responded to the Divine injunction to replenish and multiply the earth, is proved by the fact that they are the parents of twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, and have fifty grand children to their credit. They have lived here for about sixty years Besides securing sufficient of this world's goods to enable them to live in ease and comfort during their declining years, their nine children now living have been amply provided for, their sons all having good farms and in well- to-do circumstances. The old saw-mill, some distance below the old homestead, was built about fifty years ago. In this pioneer industry Mr. Shantz expended countless drops of perspiration, and when sawing logs not entirely beyond his strength to handle he would operate it single-handed and alone. At that time there was a large amount of custom sawing and he did not waste time in taking advantage of it. Mr. Shantz was evidently a young man of extraordinary physical endurance and of strong mental capacity, for now in the eighty-third year of his age we find him still vigorous in mind and not what may be called infirm physically. Mrs. Shantz is yet hail and hearty in the seventy-eighth year of her age. They are both devout adherents of the Mennonite faith.

    Death of Moses Hostetler

One by one the old pioneers of the township are being called away, and in the death of Mr. Moses Hostetler, which occurred at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26th, Wilmot loses one of its very earliest settlers, and also one of the few ones of these to remain. Mr. Hostetler reached the ripe old age of 95 years, 7 months and 14 days, and was at the time of his death the oldest man in Wilmot, and perhaps in the County of Waterloo.

The late Mr. Hostetler was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of January, 1813, and came to Canada in 1834. He settled in Wilmot township in 1836, when this part of the country was yet a dense forest, and with the ambition of perseverance, characteristic of these early settlers, he yewed out a home for himself adjoining the present village of New Hamburg, and transformed it into one of the best farms in the county. On this he carried on his agricultural pursuits and lived continually thereon until death claimed him on Wednesday last, covering a period of over 70 years. On the 4th of July 1842, he was married to Margaret Latschaw, and the union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, four of who predeceased him. They were Lavina, William, Moses and Matilda (Mrs. Jonathan Kropf). His wife died about twenty-one years ago.

The remaining children are: David, Christian, Levi, Mrs. Solomon Shantz, and Mrs. Emanuel Hamacher, Wilmot; Isaac, of New Hamburg; Daniel, of Berlin, and Henry, of Wellesley. The late Mr. Hostetler was in active service during the rebellion of 1837, and took part in several skirmishes on Pelee Island and in the western peninsula of Ontario. In politics he was a life long Liberal. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, from his late residence to Christner's Cemetery.

    _______________

    MOSES HOSTETLER.

Before concluding my sketch of the business interests of Hamburg I feel it my duty to pay tribute to this grand old man of the neighborhood. The walk to his home afforded me ample compensation for the time taken up. A stroll of a half mile north on the "Dundas Road" brings you to a long lane that leads down to his residence, a solid stone structure surounded with fruit trees and ornamental foliage. The lane is bordered on both sides by young maples, and it is positively the most inviting approach to a farm home that I have entered for many a day. The farm contains two hundred acres and is one of the most valuable in this section. A greater portion of it was a dense bush when Mr. Hostetler settled on it October 26, 1836. He was born in Pennsylvania on January 12, 1813, being now near the end of his 86th year. His parents and several brothers came here at the same time, but when the Canadian rebellion broke out, the father, being opposed to the Government, induced all the members of his family, but the subject of this sketch, to return to the States. Several of his brothers are now living in the West. The father died here several years ago. Mr. Hostetler says he never regretted remaining in Wilmot as his life here has been crowned with prosperity and his health has been exceptionally good He was married July 5, 1842, to Miss Margaret, daughter of the late Isaac Latchau. She died March 3, 1887, after a happy married life of nearly forty- five years. They raised a family of ten children, all of whom are now well provided for Levi, one of the sons, is now living on the old homestead, and is working the farm. Mr. Hostetler is remarkably active for one of his years and makes almost daily trips on foot to town, a distance of a mile and a half. As a pedestrian he will hustle many of the young men of to-day. His eyesight is yet good with the aid of glasses, and in conversation his mind gives no evidence of weakness usually the case in persons of such an advanced age. He uses the pipe and the weed, but does not indulge to excess in this habit. He also chewed tobacco, but be suddenly abandoned that habit at a moment when his wife was on her deathbed, she having convinced a dislike to his breath on account of the habit. In early days Mr. Hostetler was a hunter of considerable note, and related to the writer several thrilling adventures he had with bear and buck deer. On one occasion he had a close encounter with a large black she bear and her two cubs. Not being armed at the time, he attacked him with a club. The bear suddenly turned upon him, and would undoubtedly have made a subject for a funeral in the neighborhood had it not been for his faithful dog "Smoke," who attacked the enemy in the rear; but "Smoke" was knocked out in the first round by a well directed blow from the paw of bruin. By this time, however, Mr. H. was relieved from his perilous predicament by the arrival on the scene of one of his sons with the old family rifle, and bruin was soon made to bite the dust. The carcass was skinned and the hide afterwards sold to Benjamin Davitt, of Waterloo. Mr. Hostetler has been a member of the old Mennonite creed for the past twenty years, and is a Reformer in politics. He is openly opposed to the prohibition movement. The extent of his drinking is a glass of beer now and then, and while he does not tolerate intemperance he is inclined to the belief that absolute prohibition is contrary to constitutional rights and not in keeping with our much vaunted liberty and freedom. In his home Mr. Hostetler makes the stranger feel at ease by his generous hospitality, and the happy vein in which he recites events of the past.
