Daniel Weber," the youngest son of Daniel and Anna (Martin) Weber, was born on lot No. 2, Woolwich Township, January 11th, 1836. On January 6th, 1857, he was married to Veronica, daughter of Benjamin M. and Anna (Shantz) Weber. She was born October 30th, 1836. Soon after their marriage they moved on his father's old homestead about a mile south of Conestogo where he was engaged in farming. He died November 27th, 1888. They had a family of thirteen children"

Daniel Weber," the sixth son of Henry Weber, was born near Blue Ball, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, May 14th, 1797. He was married to Anna,daughter of old Peter Martin. This marriage took place in spring, 1819. A month or so after their marriage they, in company with Peter Martin and family and others, came to Canada and arrived at Waterloo in May of the same year. Mr. Weber located on the farm now possessed by John Lichty about a mile north of the town of Waterloo. Here he made some clearings and improvements, but wishing to locate nearer his brother, Henry, he sold out the following spring and purchased lot No. @, Woolwich Township, almost adjoining the lot of his brother. Here he resided the remaining days of his life. He died February 13th, 1864. His wife was born May 26th, 1802, and died March 13th, 1886. They had a family of four children"

Benjamin Weber," the third son of Benjamin and Veronica (Martin) Weber, was born in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 28th, 1813. He when a mere lad, came to this country with his parents in 1817, and was raised on the farm now possessed by Joseph S. Weber, his nephew, two miles north of the town of Waterloo. On March 1st, 1836, he was married to Anna, daughter of Isaac and Esther (Bechtel) Shantz. She was born August 11th, 1817. She has her home with her daughter, Anna (Mrs. N. Detweiler). After their marriage they moved on the west end of lot No. 113, German Company Tract, where they resided until his death which took place November 30th, 1870. Their family consisted of ten children".

Weber. - On the 30th of November, in Waterloo county, Ontario, of Consumption, BENJAMIN M. WEBER, aged 57 years, 9 months and 2 days. He was buried on the 2nd of December at Eby's Meeting-house. Funeral addresses were delivered by Joseph Hegy and David Sherk from Rev. 14: 12, 13. He bore his affliction with Christian fortitude, and had a great desire to depart and be with Christ. During his sickness he frequently asked God's blessing upon his family, and with tears exhorted them to hold out faithful to the end. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn their loss, but not as those having no hope. Good-by, children and wife, I must part with you for my home is in heaven and I have no rest here below. F. Nancy Weber, maiden name Shantz, daughter of Isaac Shantz, who came from Pennsylvania in 1808 and settled on the farm near Berlin, now in possession of Abram Wambold, was born Aug. 11th, 1817. On the 1st of March, 1836, she was married to Benjamin M. Weber, and moved on lot No. 113, between Bridgeport and Breslau, which was at that time all forest but a few acres. They were of the first settlers, and wolves and other wild beasts and Indians were plentiful. Some years afterward other Mennonite people came in, and they built a house of worship now known as Cressman's Meeting House. Here they lived and worshiped the Lord harmoniously in true unity and spirit together until Nov. 30, 1870, Benjamin Weber died. Since then she remained a widow until her life ended here to begin in glory, which took place April 8th, 1899, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 27 days. This union was blessed with ten children, of whom only two remain. She was buried at C. Eby's M. H. on the 11th, where a large concourse of friends and relatives were present. Services by Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 10, followed by Jacob Woolner. She was a consistent member of the Mennonite Church.

Peter Martin, "was born in West Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, February 26th, 1769. He was married to Anna Zimmerman, December 25th, 1793. She was born February 18th, 1775. He followed farming in his native state, but owing to the poor harvests for several years in succession, together with low wages and many business failures, caused him to make arrangements with his numerous family to move to Canada. Two of his daughters, Barbara, married to David Martin and Maria, married to Christian Zimmerman, remained in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, while the parents with fourteen of their children, together with Daniel Weber and others, moved to Canada in 1819. They, at their arrival here, settled first on the farm now owned by Dilman Shantz and the heirs of the late Abraham Groff, but not finding this to their taste they finally located on the farm now possessed by Menno Gingerich. Here they resided until their deaths. He died March 2nd, 1831, and she died December 12th, 1836. They had a family of seventeen children, all of whom were married."

Martin Meeting House

According to Isaac Horst, "Martins meeting house was the first of the Old Order places of worship to be built. A meeting house is reported to have been built in 1830; burial was begun in the adjoining cemetery in 1831. Martins was aptly named. The first three bishops of the area were Martins, all descended from the pioneer, Peter Martin. The land on which the house stands was formerly owned by Martins (1979: 376)." Peter Martin, Jr. purchased 220 acres of land from his brother, Henry Martin, on May 8, 1824. Apparently he set aside four acres for a meeting house and burying ground at that time. The first burial is reported to have been that of Peter Martin, Sr., who died March 2, 1831. The meeting house was enlarged in 1900.

John Weber was the first minister, followed by Abraham W. Martin, Samuel Weber, Paul Martin, Tobias Martin and Urias Martin. At one time surrounded by countryside, the meeting house and cemetery are now completely encircled by the commercial development brought about by the rapid expansion northward of the city of Waterloo.

...Martin was 62 when died in 1831, just 12 years after coming to Canada, but his important role in local history was not forgotten. His home doubled as the Martin's Church before the Martin's Meeting House on King Street North was completed.

The meeting house still stands today, next to the Martin's cemetery that holds Peter Martin's remains. Across King Street was the Martin's School (SS21), in use until 1972. It's gone now.

Because of his large family, 17 children in all, Martin was once described as "probably the most vigorous progenitor in the history of the region." His story is told in a booklet Thou Art Peter, published in 1983 by the Mennonite historian Isaac Horst of Mount Forest.....

A-1-55 Isaac Shantz: Last Will and Testament of Isaac Shantz of the Township of Waterloo.

…I, Isaac Shantzs of the Township of Waterloo, being of good health and of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament…That is to say first, that all my just debts shall be paid, Second I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Esther, all my Books, four beds and bedsteads, my stove and pipe, my 24-hour clock and case, my case of Drawers, my bureau and cubboard[sic] and all that is in them both, one spinning wheel and real one table and kitchen furniture to the amount of ten dollars; also two cows and six sheep and two hundred dollars in cash out of the first moneys arising out of my Estate, and sixty dollars as Dowry, or the interest at six percent on one thousand dollars, each and every year during her natural life, further I order and devise and it is my will, that my son Isaac B. Shantz shall have my farm at Three thousand dollars in manner and form following, that is to say, the said Isaac is to pay two thousand dollars in ten annual yearly equal installments of two hundred dollars each, and also sixty dollars as the interest on one thousand dollars, each and every year during widowhood of my beloved wife.
