    Dilman S. Bowman passed away at the home of his son, Leslie Bowman, 81 Krug Street, early today after a short illness. Mr Bowman was 79 years of age. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Bowman he was born in Wilmot Township, Oct. 23, 1862. He was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church. Mr. Bowman was married May 27, 1883, at Doon to Catherine Baer who survives him with four sons, Leslie, Harvey, and Myron of Kitchener and Vernon of Toronto, one daughter, Mrs. T. H. Cochrane, Sunnyside, and three brothers, Levi Bowman of Kossuth, Tobias of Nut Mountain, Sask., and Enos, also in Saskatchewan. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at Bethany Mennonite Church at 2: 14. Interment will take place in Hagey Cemetery, Preston. Rev. C. N. Good, pastor, will officiate. The remains will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

    Mrs. Catherine Bowman

    Mrs. Catherine Bowman, 86, of R.R. 3, Kitchener, died at the K-W Hospital, early today following a lengthy illness. Born in Waterloo Township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Baer. She was a lifelong member of the Bethany United Missionary Church. Surviving are four sons, Harvey and Leslie, both of Kitchener, Myron of Arthur and Vernon of Toronto; one daughter, Mrs. T. H. Cochrane of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Geiger of Kitchener and Mrs. Elizabeth Coons of Preston: nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Dilman Bowman predeceased her in 1942 and one son, Beniah, predeceased her in 1940. The body is resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, until Saturday noon, when removal will be made to the Bethany United Missionary Church. Funeral will be held at the church, Saturday, at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Hagey Cemetery, Preston, with Rev. Arthur Walsh officiating.

    Tobias Bowman, "the fourth son of Benjamin Baumann, was born June 26th, 1829. On April 24th, 1853, he was married to Anna, daughter of Christian and Anna (Cressman) Schneider. She was born February 19th, 1832. They reside near St. Agatha, Wilmot Township, where he is engaged in farming. Some years ago he was ordained as a minister of the Gospel for the Mennonite body. He is a fluent speaker and a good worker in the Lord's vineyard. His sermons always make a deep impression upon the minds of the attentive audience. His family consists of twelve children".

    BOWMAN - Tobias Bowman was born June 26, 1829; died Sept. 2, 1909; aged 80 y. 2 m. 6 d. On April 24, 1853, he was united in holy matrimony with Anna Snyder. To this union were born 12 children of whom 8 are living, who with the mother mourn the loss of one who has been kind and affectionate as husband and father. Bro. Bowman was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite church of Waterloo Co., Ont., in 1875, in which office he labored faithfully for many years. Though for a number of years he had not done any active ministerial work, yet he kept the faith and was glad to be with the brethren in worship and at communion. The end did not come unexpectedly. Last winter he believed the end of his life was near, and had chosen the text and also who was to officiate at his funeral. But when Spring came he recovered considerably again until about two weeks before his death. Funeral on Sunday, Sept. 5. Services at the house and at the Cressman Mennonite Church near Breslau, Ont. Services were conducted in English by C. B. Snyder from Rev. 14: 13, and in German by Jacob Woolner, Sr., from Isa. 3: 10.

    West Montrose Covered Bridge

    On January 17, 1881, Woolwich Council accepted the tender of $3,197.50 from John and Benjamin Bear for a covered bridge at West Montrose. John Bear prepared the plans and specifications for a two-span, covered bridge. The total cost, including the extra work, for building this bridge was $3,557.65. John became a renowned bridge builder after he built the Covered bridge. John Bear was hired by Woolwich Council on October 15, 1880 to inspect the following bridges: the West Montrose bridge over the Grand River, the bridge over the Conestogo River at Daniel Weber's farm and the gully bridge on the north side of Scheifele's farm (Waterloo Historical Society Journal, Kathryn Lamb, "West Montrose Covered Bridge," 1977, p27). On November 16 he stated that these bridges should be replaced in the following year (Woolwich Council Minutes, Nov 16, 1881. p280). A number of John Bear's draughting instruments are part of the museum collection at Doon Heritage Crossroads.

    On the 9th day of May, 1883, the tender of George Peppler & Co. to paint the bridge with oil paint for $74.25 was accepted.This information comes from the Elmira Municipal Archives, Box #5-1-2-8. "Bridge Book, with statements of Bridges in the Township of Woolwich, November A.D. 1903. It contains builders, tenders, costs and repairs for every bridge in Woolwich from 1881-1910. . In 1895, a cedar crib was built by M. Richard Boye at a cost of $124.00. In 1900, Bowman and Elliot built a centre pier of stone at a cost of $981.00. The total cost of the bridge was $4,662 (Bridge book, 1903, p36).

    Historic Building:
    The West Montrose covered bridge was constructed in 1881 by John and Benjamin Bear and is best known for being the last remaining historical covered bridge in Ontario. Known as the Kissing Bridge. Wikipedia Entry

    Benjamin Baumann, "eldest son of Wendel and Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 15th, 1787. He was married to Susannah, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Allenbach) Bechtel. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 16th, 1797 and died September 19th, 1870. In spring of 1815 he came to Canada, prospecting the country. He found Waterloo to be a favorable county for the forming of settlements. In fall of the same year, he in company with Jonathan B. Baumann and John Brubacher (Deacon Johney), returned to Pennsylvania. In 1818 he, in company with Christian Burkholder and family, John Good and family, old Betty Baumann (wife of Peter Baumann), old Esther Cressman, Samuel Bechtel and others, came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Waterloo County, Ontario Canada, making the journey in 28 days. On arriving here he settled on lot No. 54, German Company's Tract, township of Waterloo, about two miles south-east of Berlin, where he resided until his death. The farm is now owned by his son, Rev. Samuel Baumann. They had a family of nine children."

    Christian Schneider, "was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, May 28th, 1804. When two years of age his parents moved to Canada and settled in Doon, Ontario, where he was raised. On December 5th, 1825, he was married to Anna (No. 2104), daughter of John and Anna (Schowalter) Cressman. She was born June 18th, 1803, and died July 12th 1887. Shortly after their marriage they moved about a mile south of Breslau where he was the proprietor of the large farm now in possession of his youngest son, Absalom. he is the only one of his father's large family that is still living, and is yet quite strong considering his great age. His mental powers are good yet and he seems to enjoy the best of health but is anxiously waiting for the time to be called home to the mansions beyond. Since the decease of his wife he resides in his own house on the old place, having a housekeeper. His family consisted of eight children".

    John Bear, "was born near Preston, Ontario, May 15th, 1804. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm. When eighteen years of age he commenced life as a builder and contractor. Many a house and barn still standing in this and adjoining counties. were erected by him between the years 1823 and 1835. He was also the possessor of a beautiful farm lying between Preston and Hespeler, now owned by Anson Groh. Here he resided until the death of his wife in 1875. Then he had his home with his youngest son, Joseph, for five years. In 1880 he went to live with his son John, who resides a little west of Doon, where he died happy in the Lord, December 24th, 1894. He was converted unto the Lord when a young man, and in 1833 he joined the Mennonite Church. On December 2nd, 1838, he was ordained as Minister of the Gospel by the late Bishop Benjamin Eby. His field of labor was to be at 'Wanners', for which locality he was ordained. In 1870-71 when the first glimmerings of dissatisfaction were observable among the Mennonites, Mr. Bear was an active worker to keep up the union (The writer heard him advocate strongly in favor of union in 1870-71-72) but the spirit of disunion was carried so far (1873-4), which ultimately caused a division into the old and new communions. Mr. Bear joined himself with the new party and was one of their first ministers. We might add in conclusion that his educational attainments were very limited. Besides the acquisition of the simple elementary branches of reading, writing, and arithmetic, he in his youth was not favored, as the country was new and the schools in their primeval state. Being possessed of a very retentive memory, he exhibited a great taste for reading and was remarkably fond of investigation. He seldom accepted anything without first giving it due consideration and careful study. What little spare time he was able to snatch from the labors of the farm, he studiously devoted to the reading of such works as came within his reach. His library was composed of books pertaining to religious and devotional works. He was well versed in the Bible and works of a religious character. On February 11th, 1827, he was married to Anna, daughter of Cornelius and Anna (Detweiler) Pannabecker.     "Bear, John (1804-1894)

    John Bear: minister and building contractor; born 15 May 1804 near Preston, Upper Canada to Martin and Catharine (Gingrich) Bear. He was the oldest child in a family of six sons and seven daughters. On 11 February 1827 he married Anna Pannabecker (23 April 1812-16 February 1875); they had ten sons and three daughters. John died 24 December 1894.

    By vocation John Bear became a carpenter and builder. One of his projects was the Union Mennonite/Tunker school and meetinghouse of 1829 that predated the Wanner building of 1837. This building was used as a school until 1848. He did much of his construction work between 1823-1835. He also farmed between Preston and Hespeler (both now part of the city of Cambridge).

    John Bear was baptized as a member of the Mennonite Church in 1833; on 2 December 1838 he was ordained as a minister by Benjamin Eby particularly for service in the Wanner/Hagey area of the conference. He was widely read, but had only the basic primary education of the day. He was a second generation minister in the conference; his father had been one of the first persons ordained as a minister in the Waterloo region.

    When a doctrinal conflict arose in the Ontario Conference beginning in 1869, John Bear led an party of three ministers to investigate revival activities in Solomon Eby's congregation at Port Elgin, ON. Bear's group brought back a positive report in early 1870, but a division ultimately could not be averted. Bear then joined the new "Reformed Mennonites"; a group that ultimately became part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ denomination (later known as the Evangelical Missionary Church). He served as a minister in that denomination until his death. He was ordained as an elder in that denomination on 4 March 1888 by Menno Bowman.

    Bear's departure from the Ontario Mennonite conference was very significant because of his longstanding leadership role in the conference. As leader of the investigation committee to Port Elgin he carried the respect of his fellow ministers, and his loss to the movement was keenly felt."

    Wanner Mennonite Church
    Begun: 1829

    A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.

    Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.

    The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.

    The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School.     Catharine Bretz, "youngest daughter of Jacob and Maria (Strickler) Bretz, was born November 7th, 1805. She was married to John, son of George and Margaret Steen, May 1st, 1828. He was born July 28th, 1802, and died January 27th, 1888. She died January 26th, 1888, a few hours before her husband. They resided a little south of Tuck's Hill, in the township of Waterloo. Their family consisted of eleven children, of whom the two eldest and two youngest died in infancy. Their names, but no dates were received"
