Death of Mr. Geo. Oakley - Many of our readers in Galt and elsewhere will read with deep regret the above heading. As Bugle-Major of the 29th Battalion, when the companies put in their week's drill a few years ago in our town, Mr. Oakley was known to a good many of our townspeople, and his jolly appearance, and his equally jolly manner, made friends of every one he met. As true a Briton as ever drew breath, he was always foremost in every patriotic move, and when duty called him into the ranks, no volunteer ever took his place with a happier heart or a merrier countenance, than the big-hearted Bugle-Major of the 29th. We copy the following particulars of his death from the Berlin Telegraph - "We sincerely regret to be called upon the week to record the death of Mr. George Oakley, of Crosshill, which took place at his residence on Saturday evening last. He had been unwell for some months past, the result, we believe, of sunstroke received last summer, but no serious apprehension of a fatal termination were entertained. Of last his friends thought he was improving in health, but alas! for human calculations, while engaged in sewing the buttons upon a vest on Saturday evening, he suddenly fell forward and expired without a groan. Mr. Oakley, or "Royal George" as he was wont to style himself, had been a resident of Crosshill for the past twenty-two years, following the combined occupation of auctioneer, hotel-keeper and tailor, and was widely known and esteemed for his many excellent qualities of both head and heart. His genial countenance, which, even under the most trying circumstances, was always radiant with good humor will be sadly missed in the community - and few men have "paid the debt of nature" for whom the public have expressed more real regret. Being naturally of a more than ordinarily generous and hospitable disposition, Mr. Oakley made for himself hosts of friends whose good will and esteem he always retained. In him the poor and needy ever found a generous friend, ready to alleviate their gatherings so far as he was able. At the time of his death, and for many years previously, Mr. Oakley held the office of Secretary Treasurer to the Wellesley Agricultural Society, the duties of which he performed with commendable efficiency and fidelity. His age was 59 years. "Peace to his ashes.""

"The militiamen of Waterloo in those days were big men in every way. Capt. Barbour, of the Crosshill Company, was over 6 feet 5 inches, and his right hand man stood over 6 feet 6 inches, while the Bugle-Major, Geo. Oakley, at one time a gunner in the Royal Artillery, was so stout that it was said he had to have a rifle sling sewn to his belt to encompass his aldermanic breadbasket."

    • Residence: 1881, Waterloo City, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Lutheran

    Notes:

Louis Hedderich was one of our well known citizens, and a public man in his way, for he ran the village sprinkling wagon for many years. This tankwagon, usually a bright blue in color, was his own manufacture, and had a number of ingenious contrivances to add to its usefulness or otherwise. A huge umbrella shaded his wagon seat on hot summer days, and he had an arrangement by which a whistle chirped merrily, musically and constantly when the sprinkler was sprinkling. He secured his water supply from the mineral spring where some enterprising villagers one time bored for oil or salt and secured a wonderful flow of mineral water. A bellows attached to the wagon was used to blow a horn that called the village clerks from the shops with their pails and pitchers, to get a supply of drinking water. The same horn was used to call out the bartender, when he operated it at one of the hotels, and the dispenser of drinks, recognizing the signal, came out with a schooner of beer and emptied it into a mug which Mr. Hedderich carried, and this saved an extra trip for him. The sprinkling was paid for by subscription, each business man along the business part of King Street, contributing a certain amount each year. Mr. Hedderich did his collecting in the beginning of the year, and made his call an annual social visit as well.

He was a gun and locksmith, and an expert in repairing clocks and other articles of household use. His workshop on North King Street was an interesting bit of architecture, owing to the fact that Mr. Hedderich used a church in his native village in Germany as a model when he built it, and it had all the appearance of a small church, with tower clock that struck the hours, steeple and all.

His wife was a very useful citizen as well, and was widely known and in great demand as an experienced nurse and midwife. I believe it was her proud boast that she officiated at something like two thousand stork parties during her busy life here. Mr. and Mrs. Hedderich were in Waterloo in the early 50's, or possibly sooner, and resided here for many years until their passing at advanced ages.
