    Notes:

I am researching the Melvin family a generation or two back from the David Lees Melvin (b 1833, Riccarton, Ayrshire) mentioned on your website. Specifically, I am trying to trace a sibling of his father (James Melvin b 1799) named Annie. It seems that she had a liaison with one of my ancestors, James Humphrey, and gave birth to an illegitimate son James in the mid 1820s. She died soon thereafter. Her child was originally (in the 1841 census) named James Melvin, but changed that (by the time of the 1851 census) to James Humphrey. If you know of anyone researching the Melvin, Lees or Humphrey families back in Ayrshire, I would love to share information with them.

Best regards, John Humphrey, Toronto email 2015

    Notes:

Passing of Of Au Old Resident - By the death of Mrs. Hugh Cuthbertson, which event took place at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. A. Melvin, Ayr, on July 20, the community loses one of its oldest and most highly esteemed residents. The deceased, whose maiden name was Agnes Dale, was born at Kaman, Scotland, in 1832 and was therefore in her 73rd year. In 1849 she married Mr. Cuthbertson, who predeceased her nearly seven years. They came to Canada the same year, settling in Ayr about New Year's, 1850. Fifty-five years ago the village was in its infancy and the surrounding country was principally bush land and but sparsely settled. The Paris road had not then been opened and a small Grist mill occupied the site where the big foundry now stands. Here they hewed out a home for themselves and raised a family of nine sons and two daughters - four of whom are deceased, viz., Mrs. Wm. Stuart, George, Hugh and Adam. Of the surviving members of the family William is in London, Ont.; John at Albany, Missouri; Robert, David and Mrs. A. Melvin, in Ayr; James at Vancouver, B. C., and Thomas at Aylmer, Ont. A consistent member of the Methodist church, Mrs. Cuthbertson was also an active member in her early days, occupying for some time the position of president of the Ladies' Aid Society. As a wife and mother she was exemplary in every respect and held the love and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. Up to 1887 she enjoyed excellent health, but a severe attack of typhoid fever left many ills to be combated in later years. The funeral on Saturday, July 22, was very largely attended, interment being made in the beautiful cemetery close by. The pallbearers were four sons, William, Robert, Thomas and David, and two sons-in-law, Wm. Stewart and Albert Melvin.
