    Notes:

Earl Bingeman Loses Life By Drowning Was Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Bingeman

The sad news was received here on Monday night that Earl A. Bingeman, of this town, was drowned in Lake Erie, that evening. Word was telephoned to the parents here shortly after the accident and his mother and brother, Perlus, left immediately for Port Colborne. According to reports he and two others, Owen Savage and Ernest Rudd, were out in a dinghy. The boat suddenly tilted in the choppy lake and Earl Bingeman was thrown into the water. Savage also fell overboard but Budd owner of the boat managed to stay in the boat. They were about 100 yards off shore when the accident happened. Savage managed to swim ashore and Bingeman pulled out strongly for shore but disappeared in the choppy water. His body was recovered by bathers half an hour later, but all endeavors at rescusitation failed.

Mrs. Bingeman, with whom her husband had been swimming a short time before, saw the accident from the shore. The accident victim was born in Haysville 29 years ago and came to New Hamburg at an early age. Completing his school education here he clerked in Mr. G. B. Hathaway's store here, later going to Kitchener and then to Galt. For the past three years he had been manager of a gents furnishing store at Port Colborne. He was married two years ago to Miss Jean Wiggins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Wiggins, of Galt, who is left to mourn his tragic death, besides his parents here, six brothers and three sisters, Harold, of Ingersoll, Lloyd, of Buffalo, Stanley, of Sudbury, Nile, of London, Perlus and Jack, at home, Edith, of Hamilton General Hospital staff, (Vera) Mrs. Harry Barnes, Ingersoll and (Marian) Mrs. Homer Watson, of Montreal.

The late Mr. Bingeman was an obliging young man and was on his way to a successful career. His tragic and untimely death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. The remains were brought here yesterday and the funeral took place yesterday with service at his parent's home at three p.m. followed by internment in Riverside Cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved ones in their sad loss.

    JOHN BINGEMAN

The subject of this sketch needs no formal introduction to the people of Blenheim township, for there is probably not a farmer in the township who is more familiarly known. He has been "through the mill" in the way of hard work and hardships, to express to in the common phrase of mankind. But he is now quietly enjoying the fruits of his many years of labors, living a retired life on his farm two miles east of Plattsville and a fourth of a mile west of Washington, postoffice. The old stone house which was erected in 1855, stands upon an elevation from which a splendid view of the surrounding country can be had, the quaint hamlet of Washington being in full view. It is indeed a most inviting abode to pass the declining years of one's life.

Mr. Bingeman was born in the village of Bridgeport, Waterloo county, in 1826, and is therefore in the seventy- third year of his age, as his jovial disposition and ruddy countenance would indicate him to be man not more than in the middle age of life. He was formerly a shoemaker by trade. In 1851 he came to Blenheim and took up the home he owns and occupies. The farm comprises 150 acres and is one of the choice tracts of land of Oxford Counties. When he took possession much of it was yet under virgin forest, and all the building now on the premises were erected by him in addition to other improvements.

Prior to coming here in 1848, Mr. Bingeman was married to Judith, daughter of the late David and Leah Snider. The results of this union were sixteen children. The mother died March, 1873, in the forty first year of her age. On September 15, 1874, Mr. Bingeman was married again, his second wife being Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham B Clemens. She was born May 8, 1835, and died July 30, 1890. The fruits of the latter union was one daughter, Veronica who has already reached womanhood and is now the sole comfort and mainstay of the home which has been credit of the guiding influences of a mother. According to this record Mr. Bingeman is entitled to the credit of being the father of seventeen children. Four of the family are deceased.

David S, the oldest son, is on the home farm; Aaron, Julia and Lucy are living in Michigan; Angeline, the eldest daughter, is the wife of Samuel Cressman who is about to remove to Calgary, Man; Mary Ann is the wife of Jacob Shantz, of near Platteville; Elias and Isaac are farming in Wilmot; Titus is living near New Dundee; Caroline is the wife of Jonathan Shantz,, of Winterbourne; Elizabeth is the wife of Aaron Rosenberger, of Berlin; Emma is the wife of Rufus McNickel of Plattsville.

David S., the eldest son, who bas charge of the home place, has a wife and family of four children. They reside in the old stone portion of the residence, a brick addition having been erected for the accommodation of the father. Like the latter the son is having good success as a former and takes particular pride in horse flesh. He has several fine roadsters and a match span of blacks that have and would again give a good account in a show ring. Everything is convenient about the premises, abundance of pure water being furnished the horses and cattle by a hydraulic ram from a never failing spring in the vicinity. In addition to large quantities of grain, roots, etc., the family is amply supplied with choice fruits. This season they put up seventy barrels of prime apples for export. David S. has had charge of the farm about ten years. It would be a moral lesson to a good many similarly situated to note the good will and perfect harmony predominating in this home. The family espouses the Mennonite faith.

The old gentleman is a staunch Reformer, but outside of casting his ballot when an election requires it he keeps aloof from the shady arena of politics. His genial manner and friendly disposition towards all whom he meets has made his friends legion. He believes in enjoying life while life instead and now in his declining years to enjoy the benefits of that which he accumulated by the sweat of his brow in the years of his earlier manhood. He is still in robust health and promises well to reach beyond the octogenarian limit. You will invariably find him in good humor, a characteristic that accounts for his healthy physical condition. The wish of the CHRONICLE scribe is that he may for many years more continue to enjoy a life of ease of body and contentment of mind.

    _____________

    Joseph Y. Shantz.

Under the hospitable roof of this pioneer citizen I spent a few pleasant hours. He is one of the specimens of noble manhood, through whose instrumentality vast sections of the wilds of Western Canada have been made to blossom as the rose. He was born July 10th, 1815. His wife, nee Elizabeth Stauffer, was born near Doon, in Waterloo township, January 10th, 1820. They were married on May 15th, 1838, and now live a quiet and retired life on the old homestead, which through years of hard toil and privations they accumulated that in after years they and their offspring might enjoy. That they have faithfully responded to the Divine injunction to replenish and multiply the earth, is proved by the fact that they are the parents of twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, and have fifty grand children to their credit. They have lived here for about sixty years Besides securing sufficient of this world's goods to enable them to live in ease and comfort during their declining years, their nine children now living have been amply provided for, their sons all having good farms and in well- to-do circumstances. The old saw-mill, some distance below the old homestead, was built about fifty years ago. In this pioneer industry Mr. Shantz expended countless drops of perspiration, and when sawing logs not entirely beyond his strength to handle he would operate it single-handed and alone. At that time there was a large amount of custom sawing and he did not waste time in taking advantage of it. Mr. Shantz was evidently a young man of extraordinary physical endurance and of strong mental capacity, for now in the eighty-third year of his age we find him still vigorous in mind and not what may be called infirm physically. Mrs. Shantz is yet hail and hearty in the seventy-eighth year of her age. They are both devout adherents of the Mennonite faith.

    Death of Moses Hostetler

One by one the old pioneers of the township are being called away, and in the death of Mr. Moses Hostetler, which occurred at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26th, Wilmot loses one of its very earliest settlers, and also one of the few ones of these to remain. Mr. Hostetler reached the ripe old age of 95 years, 7 months and 14 days, and was at the time of his death the oldest man in Wilmot, and perhaps in the County of Waterloo.

The late Mr. Hostetler was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of January, 1813, and came to Canada in 1834. He settled in Wilmot township in 1836, when this part of the country was yet a dense forest, and with the ambition of perseverance, characteristic of these early settlers, he yewed out a home for himself adjoining the present village of New Hamburg, and transformed it into one of the best farms in the county. On this he carried on his agricultural pursuits and lived continually thereon until death claimed him on Wednesday last, covering a period of over 70 years. On the 4th of July 1842, he was married to Margaret Latschaw, and the union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, four of who predeceased him. They were Lavina, William, Moses and Matilda (Mrs. Jonathan Kropf). His wife died about twenty-one years ago.

The remaining children are: David, Christian, Levi, Mrs. Solomon Shantz, and Mrs. Emanuel Hamacher, Wilmot; Isaac, of New Hamburg; Daniel, of Berlin, and Henry, of Wellesley. The late Mr. Hostetler was in active service during the rebellion of 1837, and took part in several skirmishes on Pelee Island and in the western peninsula of Ontario. In politics he was a life long Liberal. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, from his late residence to Christner's Cemetery.

    _______________

    MOSES HOSTETLER.

Before concluding my sketch of the business interests of Hamburg I feel it my duty to pay tribute to this grand old man of the neighborhood. The walk to his home afforded me ample compensation for the time taken up. A stroll of a half mile north on the "Dundas Road" brings you to a long lane that leads down to his residence, a solid stone structure surounded with fruit trees and ornamental foliage. The lane is bordered on both sides by young maples, and it is positively the most inviting approach to a farm home that I have entered for many a day. The farm contains two hundred acres and is one of the most valuable in this section. A greater portion of it was a dense bush when Mr. Hostetler settled on it October 26, 1836. He was born in Pennsylvania on January 12, 1813, being now near the end of his 86th year. His parents and several brothers came here at the same time, but when the Canadian rebellion broke out, the father, being opposed to the Government, induced all the members of his family, but the subject of this sketch, to return to the States. Several of his brothers are now living in the West. The father died here several years ago. Mr. Hostetler says he never regretted remaining in Wilmot as his life here has been crowned with prosperity and his health has been exceptionally good He was married July 5, 1842, to Miss Margaret, daughter of the late Isaac Latchau. She died March 3, 1887, after a happy married life of nearly forty- five years. They raised a family of ten children, all of whom are now well provided for Levi, one of the sons, is now living on the old homestead, and is working the farm. Mr. Hostetler is remarkably active for one of his years and makes almost daily trips on foot to town, a distance of a mile and a half. As a pedestrian he will hustle many of the young men of to-day. His eyesight is yet good with the aid of glasses, and in conversation his mind gives no evidence of weakness usually the case in persons of such an advanced age. He uses the pipe and the weed, but does not indulge to excess in this habit. He also chewed tobacco, but be suddenly abandoned that habit at a moment when his wife was on her deathbed, she having convinced a dislike to his breath on account of the habit. In early days Mr. Hostetler was a hunter of considerable note, and related to the writer several thrilling adventures he had with bear and buck deer. On one occasion he had a close encounter with a large black she bear and her two cubs. Not being armed at the time, he attacked him with a club. The bear suddenly turned upon him, and would undoubtedly have made a subject for a funeral in the neighborhood had it not been for his faithful dog "Smoke," who attacked the enemy in the rear; but "Smoke" was knocked out in the first round by a well directed blow from the paw of bruin. By this time, however, Mr. H. was relieved from his perilous predicament by the arrival on the scene of one of his sons with the old family rifle, and bruin was soon made to bite the dust. The carcass was skinned and the hide afterwards sold to Benjamin Davitt, of Waterloo. Mr. Hostetler has been a member of the old Mennonite creed for the past twenty years, and is a Reformer in politics. He is openly opposed to the prohibition movement. The extent of his drinking is a glass of beer now and then, and while he does not tolerate intemperance he is inclined to the belief that absolute prohibition is contrary to constitutional rights and not in keeping with our much vaunted liberty and freedom. In his home Mr. Hostetler makes the stranger feel at ease by his generous hospitality, and the happy vein in which he recites events of the past.
