In spring, 1836, he was adopted by Peter Erb who resided on the old 'Erb Farm' about two miles north of Bridgeport. In 1843, when he was eighteen years of age, he came to Jonas C. Shantz's, Wilmot Township, where he was engaged as farm hand for one year. From here he went to Copetown, Wentworth County, where he served his apprenticeship at the shoemaking trade for three years with one Jasper Dresser. In 1847 he returned to Waterloo County and engaged himself to Mr. John Salyards of Preston to work at his trade, in whose service he remained one year. In fall of 1849 he engaged the Reist school (S.S. No. 14) and in 1850 he taught the River Bank School (S.S. No. 15). On June 10th, 1851, he married to Hannah, daughter of John and Judith (Bingeman) Schneider. After his marriage he worked at his trade for three years, having his shop in his present residence. After the expiration of the three years, he, in 1854, commenced to teach again and taught almost steadily up to 1884 when he retired from the profession. He is now on the superannuated list, receiving a yearly pension of $132. He resides at his old home near Bloomingdale where he has spent many a happy day in his life, and is quite well yet considering his age and the great amount of mental work he has performed in his time. Many good wishes for his happiness in the evening of his far advanced life. (Since writing the biography of Mr. Thomas he died suddenly, May 8th, 1895) To him and his wife was born a family of six children"
