Death Is Sudden For Elmira Man

Well-Known and Popular Resident Is Called By Death

The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon of Thomas H. Matthews, well-known and popular resident of Elmira, whose death occurred quite suddenly Monday evening while he was accompanying his sister home. Rev. J. Ure Stewart of Wesley United Church will conduct the service to be held at his late residence at 2: 30 o'clock in the afternoon. Interment will be made in the Elmira Cemetery. The pall-bearers will be: Messrs. Orrie Hollinger, Charles Hermann, Louis Doerfler, George Ernest, Casper Stumpf and G. H. Ballard.

His sister, Mrs. Stickney, called on him Monday evening. When she was about to go Mr. Matthews said he would walk down with her. Within a few rods of his home he seemed to falter and his sister tried to catch his arm, but he dropped, falling away from the sidewalk. Shortly afterwards he had breathed his last. A doctor was called but he had passed away. Mr. Matthews was seemingly always in good health and was about town during the day his death occurred. He had stated that his stomach seemed to be troubling him for a day or two.

Mr. Matthews, aged 75 years, three months and 26 days, was born in Peel Township, a son of the late William Matthews. He married Margaret Stork of Peel 51 years ago. Two sons were born, Norman, who resides on the homestead and Wellington, who resides on a farm nearby. About 24 years ago he retired from farming and came to Elmira to reside, purchasing a home at 24 Park Avenue. Mrs. Matthews died on February 16 1931, and since then Mr. Matthews lived alone at his home. He will be greatly missed about town as he always seemed quite cheerful and contented and enjoyed meeting and chatting with people. Even the children all knew him and called him by his first name and he had a kindly work for everyone.

Surviving, besides the two sons, are two brothers, Emerson of Glen Allan and Charles on the homestead, two sisters, Mrs. Stickney of Elmira and Mrs. Herb Malloy of Sheffield; and also four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She came to Beverly Township, Ontario, with her parents in 1837, when but seven weeks old and when she was three years old the family moved to Woolwich Township on a farm, much of which is now covered by the village of Elmira. In 1861 she was married to her now bereaved husband, Mr. John Stark. The union was blessed with four children, two of whom died in infancy. The two surviving ones are Mrs. Thomas Matthews, Elmira, and Mr. A.W. Stark, Creekbank. Several brothers also survive, some of whom were present at the funeral which took place on Wednesday of last week. Notes:

Mr. R. Kenning, one of Elmira's first settlers died suddenly at his home in Berlin on Friday. He arose early in the morning and ate a hearty breakfast, after which he cut a little wood, did a few other chores and went into the house. He was about to light his pipe when he fell over dead. The northeastern part of Elmira was surveyed by him. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and we believe the lot on which the Elmira Presbyterian Church is erected was presented to that body by him. He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters, and was 80 years old.
