    Notes:

    Hesson is a little country village in the northeast corner of the Township of Mornington, Perth County, about a mile west of Wellesley Township on a cross road.
    Mr. George Stemmler and wife from Rottenburg, Wuertemberg, came here in the 40's to hew a home out of the forest for themselves. In 1847 Mr. Andrew Bissinger joined them. Gradually many other followed from various sections, mostly Germans.
    As soon as St. Clement's received a resident priest, the Rev. Columban Messner, O.C., in 1852, these settlers attached themselves to that parish in as far a distance and bad roads allowed. But before that time the Jesuit Fathers of St. Agatha and of New German and Guelph called here occasionally. The colonists were in the habit of assembling in one of the settlers houses for lay services on Sundays and holidays. This pious practice they kept up when they had no priest until they obtained a resident pastor.

    I Wilhelm Gehl of the Township of Waterloo, do make and ordain this my last will and testament…I give and bequeath to my dear beloved wife Margret(sic) one hundred and sixty six acres be the same more or less being composed of lots no 141 and 142, to youse(sic) and manage as long as she think proper and all the stock and farming utensils and house furniture and after his decease the whole estate is to be divided equil to my children and if one or two of the children would like to have the farm they should have a reasonably time to pay the farm. If neither of my children wish to have the farm then the farm is to be sold, and if my wido(sic) thinks it proper to sell the land and every thing she shall have full power with the Executor. I nominate constitute and appoint my beloved wife Margaret Gehl Executrix and also my son Anton Gehl Executor.
