His companion died July 25, 1885. On Oct. 31, 1886, he was married to Catharine Shantz. This union was blessed with three children, of whom only one survives. On Oct. 16, 1924, his second wife was also laid to rest, whose loss he felt keenly. He died Dec. 20, 1925, after a brief illness of heart trouble and dropsy; aged 80 y. 22 d. He leaves 7 children, 35 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, and one sister. The family has lost a loving father, the Church a faithful pillar, the community a kind neighbor, one who was ever ready to be of service to others. Bro. Schmitt was born on the farm, where he lived all his years, and reached the ripe old age of four score years. On Nov. 28 it was his desire that his family and a few others help celebrate his 80th, and as it proved, his last birthday. "This shall be my last birthday," he said, and he lived just 22 days longer. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 24th, by Orphen Wismer, Manassah Hallman, and C. F. Derstine. Text, Eccl. 12: 5.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MOSES E. WISMER

One of the town's best known and most highly respected citizens, Moses E. Wismer; one of Preston's outstanding citizens, was removed by death late Saturday afternoon. He had been a resident of the town for 32 years, and there was no citizen who was more highly respected than the late Mr. Wismer. He possessed a very kind and pleasing disposition and made many friends. He was a man who had a good word to say for everyone, was well read, and always took a great interest in town affairs. He was an outstanding figure at nomination meetings for many years and it is doubtful if there was a nomination meeting in the past twenty years at which he was not nominated for some municipal office. He had served in the Council as Deputy Reeve and filled that office to the satisfaction of the ratepayers, proving a valuable representative of the town of Preston at the County Council. In religion he was a Mennonite and in politics he was a staunch Liberal.

The late Mr. Wismer was in his seventy-sixth year and in spite of his advanced age he was hale and hearty. For years he had done all the work on his farm. He had always enjoyed good health, and only on Friday last, complained of not feeling well, but he then would not have a doctor called because he said it was nothing serious. On Saturday, he did his work around the barn during the day and at five o'clock went to the barn to do the evening chores. He had about completed the work around the barn when he suddenly passed away. It was six o'clock when Mrs. Wismer noticed that the cattle were still out in the barnyard, and feeling uneasy she went to the barn to investigate and discovered the lifeless body of her husband lying in the stable. Medical aid was immediately summoned but life was extinct.

The late Mr. Wismer was a son of the late Bishop Daniel Wismer and was born in the vicinity of New Hamburg, on April 9, 1846. Shortly afterwards his parents moved to Lexington, where he obtained his education. On February 16, 1868, he was married to Magdalena, daughter of Jacob Wismer. Following their marriage they moved to the old Wismer farm three miles southeast of Kitchener where they resided for 19 years. Then he and his family moved to Doon where he entered into partnership with T. and A.B. Snyder and from Doon he moved to the farm at Preston, where he died. The news of his death came as a great shock to the family and the citizens of the town. He leaves to mourn his loss, a widow and the following children: Orphan H. Wismer, near Baden in Wilmot Township; Addison M. Wismer, Millroche; Mrs. N. Snider, Blair; Nelson A. Wismer, Seattle, U.S.A. Mrs. Phelps McNabb, Village of Massey, Mrs. Isaac Erb, Kitchener; Herbert D. Wismer, German Mills.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 1: 30, with a short service at the house, thence to the East End Mennonite Church, Kitchener, where a service will be held and interment will take place at the East End Mennonite Cemetery.

Moses married Magdalena Snider 16 Feb 1868, , Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Magdalena (daughter of Jacob S. Snider and Magdalena Snyder) was born 6 Dec 1847, Near Bloomingdale, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 19 Nov 1931, Strasburg (Kitchener) Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Bechtel.-Bro. Jacob S. Bechtel was born in Bloomingdale, Ont., July 2, 1914; aged 74 y. 4 m. 19 d. On Feb. 28, 1865, he was married to Salome (Roos) Devitt. This union was blessed with 8 children, 2 dying in infancy, leaving to mourn their loss a wife, 5 daughters, and 1 son. He had been ailing for about 2 years with cancer of the stomach. All his life was spent without God and no hope for the future until about 2 months before the death summons came he desired a minister to visit him, being deeply concerned about his soul's salvation. About two weeks later he sent for a bishop and wanted to be baptized and received into the church, which was done. He mourned his misspent life, but rejoiced in the saving power in the blood of Jesus. Funeral services were held July 4 at the home by Noah Hunsberger and at the Berlin Church by Jonas Snider in German, and by Pastor Burns of the Evangelical Church, Waterloo, in English.
