    Donald William McRuer

    An Ayr native, Donald William McRuer of 211 2nd Ave. S.E., Owen Sound passed away at the General and Marine Hospital, Owen Sound, on Friday, February 20th. He was 50. Born in Paris he was a son of Robert A. McRuer of Ayr and the late Marion (Lillico) McRuer. He was raised on the family farm, townline, RR 3, Ayr, being active in local hockey and 4-H activities. Mr. McRuer took up residence in Owen Sound 22 years ago. He was a science teacher at Grey Highlands District Secondary School, Flesherton. Active in the community, he was a member and elder of Westside United Church, president of Sydenham Skating Club, and manager of the Owen Sound midget hockey club. Mr. McRuer was looking forward to this weekend's participation of his hockey team in the Ayr tournament. Surviving besides his father is his wife, the former Betty Newstead; three daughters, Kathryn of Kitchener, Mrs. Dale (Janet) Schnurr of Winnipeg and Sandra of Toronto; a son Neil at home; and a brother Gordon of RR 3, Ayr. Funeral service was held in Owen Sound on Monday afternoon. Interment Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Kyle, Howard Mitchell, Howard Brown, Doug Hall, John Henderson and Bruce Cochrane, all of this area.

    Robert Alexander McRuer of RR 3, Ayr, passed away at Brantford General Hospital on. Wednesday, February 3rd. He was in his 91st year. Born in South Dumfries Township, he was a son of the late William MeRuer and Elizabeth Gill. Mr. McRuer farmed all his life in South Dumfries and Blenheim townships; he had served as elder, trustee, clerk of session and choir member in Knox United Church, Ayr and was active in many community organizations. Predeceased by his wife, Marion Lillico. Survived by son, Gordon and his wife Barbara of RR 3, Ayr and their family, Lynn McRuer, Mary Milanovich, Heather Snell and Douglas McRuer; daughter-in-law, Betty McRuer of Owen Sound and her family, Kathy Harloff, Janet Schnurr, Sandra MeRuer and Neil McRuer; six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Also predeceased by son, Donald; sisters, Rachel, Jessie and Bessie and brother, William. Rested at the Wm. Kipp 'Funeral Home, Paris. Funeral service was held at Knox United Church, Ayr, with Rev. George Saunders officiating. Interment in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Neil McRuer, Doug McRuer, Petar Milanovich, Bob Snell, Dale Schnurr and Don Harloff.

    Death of Mrs. Robert A. McRuer

    One of the district's most respected residents and a devoted church and community worker, Mrs. Robert A. McRuer passed away at Willett Hospital, Paris, on Saturday in her 55th year. She had suffered a prolonged illness. The former Marin Marguerite Lillico, she was born on the 11th concession of Blenheim, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Douglas R. Lillico. She was married in 1930 and lived on the Blenheim-Dumfries Townline until overtaken by Illness. Mrs. McRuer was a valued member of Knox United Church and the Kate M. Thomson Auxiliary. She was also active in the Blenheim-Dumfries Farm Women's Club and the Townline Community Club. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Donald of Owen Sound and Gordon on the home farm; three sisters, Mrs. Andrew C. Hall (Elizabeth), RR 3, Bright; Mrs. Deans Cochrane (Isabelle), RR 2, Paris, and Mrs. Robert G. Brown (Agnes), RR 4, Galt, and five grandchildren.

    The Funeral

    Funeral service was held on Monday at the Cumming Funeral Home, Paris, with interment in Ayr Cemetery Chapel. Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan of Knox United Church officiated. The pallbearers were: Howard Brown, Bruce Cochrane, Douglas Hall, Andrew McRae, Neil McRae and William Guthrie. Flower-bearers were: Cameron Cochrane, Arthur Tew, Russell Farncombe, Calvin Reid, Robert Hall, Howard Mitchell, Hugh Hall, John Henderson and William Robblee.

    Death Claims Prominent South Dumfries Farmer

    The death occurred on Saturday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Morton Hall, Blenheim township, of William McRuer, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of South Dumfries, aged exactly 77 years, his demise having occurred on his birthday. He was born at Lachute, Quebec, and when a lad of eleven came to Ayr with his family and settled on a farm one-half mile west of the White School. The family was induced to remove to this section on account of an uncle of the deceased, Rev. Duncan McRuer, pastor of Knox Church, being located here. Deceased was married in 1882 to Elizabeth Gillow of Norwich, who predeceased him in 1919. He was a lifelong and valued member of Knox United Church and was a member of the Session for many years. He is survived by the following two sons and two daughters: William J., Robert A., Mrs. Wyllie Guthrie and Mrs. Morton Hall.

    Passing of Mrs. Wm. McRuer - Here and there throughout the country that terrible scourge, the Spanish Influenza, is still claiming its victims. On Tuesday morning another well-known and highly esteemed resident of this community, in the person of Mrs. William McRuer, was called after about ten days illness. The death took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wyllie Guthrie, near Paris. While nursing the "flu" patients in the family, both at home and at Mr. Guthrie's, she contracted the disease, but was thought to be recovering when a relapse set in and in her run-down condition she was unable to rally. The deceased was a very estimable woman, and a wide circle of friends will sincerely regret her demise. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Gilliam. She was born in North Norwich tp., Oxford County, over 61 years ago, and was married on April 5, 1882. She was a member of Knox United Church in Ayr and a worker in church organizations. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters and two sons, viz.: Mrs. (Rev.) Andrew McRae, Gobles; Mrs. W. Guthrie, Paris; Mrs. Morton Hall, Blenheim; Wm. John and Robt. Alex, at home. The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorely bereaved husband and family. The funeral takes place from her late residence, lot 31, con. 5, South Dumfries, today (Thursday), at 2:30 p.m., to the Ayr Cemetery.

    Prominent Blenheim Farmer Passes Away Tuesday Night After Brief Illness


    The death occurred on Tuesday evening at 8.30 o'clock of a well-known and highly-esteemed resident of Blenheim township in the person of Douglas Lillico, 10th concession, in his 67th year. Deceased was taken ill on Friday night with heart trouble and other complications, and his condition gradually grew more serious until death intervened.


    He was born on the farm on which he died, known as the Lillico homestead, being the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lillico. He took an active interest in all matters pertaining to the betterment of the community and was known as a successful and progressive farmer. In May, 1909, shortly after its organization, he was elected a director of the Ayr Rural Telephone Company, a position which he had held ever since.

    Deceased was a valued member of Knox United Church and for the past eleven years was a member of the board of trustees. Previous to that time, he had served on the board of managers. Fraternally, he was a member of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F. Mr. Lillico was a good citizen, of exemplary habits, and his many fine qualities won him the respect and esteem of a host of friends and acquaintances. Deceased is survived by the following four daughters, his wife having predeceased him nine years ago: Mrs. Andrew C. Hall, Blenheim; Mrs. Deans Cochrane, North Dumfries; Mrs. Robert McRuer, Blenheim, and Mrs, Robert G. Brown, North Dumfries. Also surviving are one sister, Elizabeth Lillico, and one brother, Murdo Lillico, both of Blenheim. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock to the Ayr Cemetery.
