    Notes:

Sudden Death in Galt - A very sudden death occurred in Galt on Tuesday night last, fully and painfully exemplifying the truth of the saying that "in the midst of life we are in death." Since the opening of the Grand Trunk to this town in 1873, Mr. C. Fletcher has been night-watchman at the station, being in attendance as baggage-man. At the arrival of the evening train from Toronto on Tuesday evening Mr. Fletcher was on duty as usual, and after the arrival of the train and the performance of the necessary "shunting," he assisted at the turn-table in turning the engine. From there he went into the passenger car to put out the lamps therein; but a short time after, Mr. Hushin, engine-cleaner, had occasion to pass from the engine-house to the station, and saw that the lights were still burning in the passenger car and at the station. Thinking this strange he entered the car for the purpose of seeing if Mr. Fletcher was there, and saw him sitting on one of the seats therein with his coat off. For a moment or so Mr. Hushin thought he had fallen asleep at his work, but on going up to him he was horrified to find that he was quite dead. From the appearance of the car, it would seem as if the unfortunate man had been at work reversing the seats therein when the faintness of death struck him, and that he had merely time to seat himself in one of them before his spirit took its flight. The body was as speedily as possible removed from the car to the station, and afterwards to the residence of the deceased, Market Street. Mr. Fletcher was a kind, obliging and inoffensive man, and was well liked in his position. He was aged 57 years, and leaves a wife and family to mourn his sudden taking off.
