    • Occupation: 1911, Hespeler (Cambridge), Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Retail, Hardware
    • Residence: 1911, Hespeler (Cambridge), Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; Lutheran

    Notes:

After learning the tinsmithing at Preston, Louis Grill went to Guelph and there worked at the trade for several years. In 1896 he came to Hespeler, and on the site of the Johnston Blacksmith Shop, erected the fine building Leroy Wettlaufer now owns. In this building he successfully conducted the hardware business and a tinshop in connection until he died.

He was a member of New Hope Masonic and Hespeler Oddfellows Lodges and in religion, a Lutheran. He served on the Town Council for three years, 1911-13, with credit to himself. He was a useful member. We were for years next door neighbors, and I frequently dropped into his store. Usually some little story was told by one or the other or some joke.

One morning during the winter the temperature dropped to about Zero, and when I entered the store Lou. remarked that it was a cold morning; down tn Zero, I told him I thought he had better bring in the thermometer which hung outside before it got any colder.

It happened that morning was just the start and for three or four mornings it got colder and colder until it struck about forty below; I dropped in that morning and found Louis with his collar turned up fixing away at the fire in his stove. He mentioned that this was a corker and I started right in abusing him for not having brought the thermometer in when I told him four days ago.

Ever after that, when it happened to be either very cold or very hot, Louie, with a twinkle in his eye used to say "I'll have to bring the thermometer in before it gets worse.''

The hundreds that knew him will tell you there never was a finer, more decent man in Hespeler than Louis Grill.

We have lost no one from Berlin, but St. Jacobs mourns for one manly heart which has ceased its pulsations. Poor Jacob C. Snyder, jr., we parted with him in Toronto on Wednesday morning, in the enjoyment of health and in the hope of a long and useful life. Thursday evening he was a corpse! Mr. Snyder had gone to Toronto to place himself under the care of Dr. Cadwell, the Oculist. He had left Toronto to see a party in Hamilton, intending to return on the morrow. Unfortunate man -- he hurried himself into eternity. He was a generous-hearted and upright man, and we feel certain left not an enemy in the world. His remains were brought to St. Jacobs on Saturday and were laid in their last restingplace on Monday, attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. The evidence on the Coroner's Jury, taken thus far, we are unable to print this week, Until the verdict is rendered we withhold our opinion of the cause of the accident -- an opinion formed after the closet examination of surrounding appearances.
