Rev. George B. Detweiler," was born January 6th, 1846. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm near Roseville, Ontario. When about eighteen years of age he commenced to teach school in S. S. No. 6, Waterloo County, where he taught for some time, from here he went to Roseville where he was engaged in farming. On November 27th, 1870, he was married to Harriet, daughter of Isaac B. and Anna (Wismer) Tyson. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 2nd, 1844. At present they reside near Sherkston, Welland County, Ontario, where he is the owner of a beautiful farm. They belong to the River Brethren Denomination of which body he has been ordained a minister some years ago. Up to present he has proved to be very successful in his ministerial calling. He is a good worker in the Lord's vineyard and seems to be gifted with a natural power of making many friends. His sermons are never long but always very pointed and convincing. During the time of his ministry the congregation has, on his field of labor, increased in membership. His family consists of six children"

Detwiler, George Bechtel (1847-1931).

George Bechtel Detwiler was born near Roseville in Waterloo Co., ON. A Mennonite, he married Harriet Tyson, a Brethren in Christ from Pennsylvania, in 1870. Four years later he joined her denomination. After teaching school for several years, he moved in 1885 with his family to a farm near Fort Erie, where he became a minister in the Bertie congregation and helped organize the first Sunday school in at least two Ontario Brethren in Christ congregations.

In 1899 the Detwilers moved to Abilene, KS where he became first associate editor and a few months later editor of his denomination's paper, Evangelical Visitor. In 1902 the editorial offices and the Detwilers moved to Harrisburg, PA. Although he did not accept the doctrine of sanctification that was being increasingly favored in the Brethren in Christ Church, he endeavored in his editing to maintain a balance between opposing positions on the doctrine. This editorial policy, however, led in 1918 to his replacement as editor by Vernon Stump, a strong holiness advocate. Thereafter, under Stump, Evangelical Visitor became a holiness paper. From 1917 to 1925 he taught Bible at Messiah Bible College (later Messiah College). Throughout his life he was a respected Bible commentator and Bible conference speaker.

Enoch Detweiler," was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1818. In 1822 his parents moved to Canada and settled a little west of Roseville, Ontario, where he was raised. On January 18th, 1842, he was married to Abigail, daughter of George B. and Mary (Shoemaker) Bechtel. She was born near Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, October 8th, 1821. After their marriage they moved on his father's old homestead where they resided until his death which took place September 18th, 1874. When a young man he was converted unto the Lord and soon thereafter joined himself with the Mennonite body. On June 5th, 1859, Mr Detweiler was ordained as a minister of the Gospel for the Detweiler field of labor. In all his sermons and exhortations he urged upon his followers holiness of life, and uprightness and godliness in all manner of conversation. What should it benefit one to be a full believer in the tenets of Simon Menno, if his actions did not conform thereto, and his walk be upright and pure. In a holy and consecrated life, therefore, as he taught, did all christian godliness consist. But in the midst of his days the arrow of death bore our beloved minister, brother and friend from the scenes of his life's activity, and from the companionship of his beloved wife and family besides that of his faithful circle of followers, and his freed spirit winged its course beyond the skies where we are promised rest from all our labors. His widow has her home with her son, Aaron, who resides on the old homestead. She is quite active yet for a person of her age. Their family consisted of ten children"

Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

Detweiler. - Abigail Bechtel, relict of the late Enoch R. Detweiler, was born near Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., Oct. 8, 1821. At the age of 7 years she came with her parents to Waterloo Co., Ont. In the year 1842 she entered the bonds of holy matrimony and lived 32 years in that state. In 1874 her husband died, after which she raised her family alone, living in widowhood for 39 years. She had 5 sons and 5 daughters. Her husband and 1 daughter preceded her to the spirit world. She was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of the Mennonite church. She died in the city of Berlin on July 23, 1913. Funeral on the 26th. Short service at the home of her son-in-law, D. S Huber, thence to the Detweiler Church, Roseville, for service and interment. Service by Noah Stauffer from Joh 5: 26. Aged 91 y. 9 m 15 d.

In Loving Memory Died At Berlin, Ont., on Wednesday, July 23rd, 1913 Abigail Bechtel widow of the late Rev. Enoch R. Detwiler, Aged 91 years, 9 months and 15 days. The Funeral Will take place from the residence of D.S. Huber, 101 Queen St. North, on Saturday, July 26th, at 12.45 p.m., where a short service will be held, thence to the Detwiler Mennonite Church, Roseville, for service and interment.

TYSON.-Anna Tyson, relict of the late Isaac B. Tyson, of Upper Providence Twp., Montgomery Co, Pa., died on Monday the 6th of October, at the residence of her daughter, Lydia W. Heisey, near Williams Grove Cumberland Co., aged 85 years, 4 months and 26 days. Eight years ago when her husband died, Sister Tyson removed from the above named township to Cumberland Co. She was well known in this section and had the highest esteem of a wide circle of friends. The deceased was the mother of ten children, six of whom survive her, viz: Enos W., of Schwenksville; Lydia W., wife of Henry S. Heisey, of Cumberland Co; Reuben W., of Upper Providence, Emeline W. wife of Daniel Kinsel; Mary W., wife of Levi S. Heisey of Cumberland Co., and Harriet. W., wife of Pre. Geo. Detwiler, of Sherkston, Ont. Thirty-five grand-children and two great-grand-children survive one who has passed the border line after a long and very useful life. The funeral services were held at the residence of her daughter, Lydia, on the 9th inst. Pre. John Lininger preached from Phil. 4: 8. Services were also held at the Upper Providence church on the 10th and the remains interred in the burial ground adjoining the church.

Jacob Detweiler," second son of Jacob and Mary (Funk) Detweiler, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 25th, 1778. On December 15th, 1803, he was married to Susannah Rosenberger who was born in the same county as Mr. Detweiler, January 15th, 1781. When a young man he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite body, but when the Funkite question was brought up he would not give his decision in favor of either party. However, after his coming to Canada he was an active worker in behalf of the Mennonite church until his death. In 1822 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, a little west of Roseville, on the farm now possessed by their grand-son, Aaron B. Detweiler. Here they resided until their deaths. She died September 9th, 1847, and he died August 8th, 1858. To them was born a family of ten children"

I, Jacob Detweiller Senior of the Township of North Dumfries…First I Will and ordain that my funeral expenses and all my just debts shall be paid as soon as possible on convenient after my decease. I Will and ordain that all the residue of my estate shall be divided into nine equal shares or portions and that my sons and daughters shall have each a share, and that the children of my deceased daughters Elizabeth and Nancy have one share each which has to be distributed equally amongst them, but the shares of those who are under age to remain in the hands of the Executors on interest to be delivered over to them when they arrive at the years of majority. And also that my daughter Susanna's portion of legacy be kept in the hands of the Executors when they think that she or her heirs will most need it. And that my two sons Enoch and Benjamin shall have their portions after all the rest of my family have had their portions or legacies. George B. Bechtel "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, near Pottstown, May 24th, 1777. On November 16th, he was married to Esther Livergood. They resided on his father's old place near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where she died March 2nd, 1814, leaving a family of four children, namely: V Catharine, V Levi, V George L., and V Isaiah L.. After the decease of his first wife he was married to Maria, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Tyson) Shoemaker, November 25th, 1817. She was born January 21st, 1793, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, February 6th, 1840. They moved to Canada in 1829, and resided for two years on the farm now possessed by Joseph M. Brubacher, about two miles north of the town of Waterloo. From here they moved on the farm now possessed by Dilman S. Shantz. The second union was blessed with six children, namely: V Noah, V Rudolph, V Abigail, V Leah, V Esther, and V Isabella."
