About the turn of the century R. B. Keeler and Son opened a repair shop and jewellery store at the west end of Glick's Block and carried on some years. Charlie Grill returned from Aylmer and bought the business and he sold out to Frank Calvert. Mr. Calvert operated successfully and then moved to one of the far western States where he did a huge business and when he left he sold out to Fred Gunther who came here from Dundas in the year 1928 and continued until he passed on in 1946.

His son, Harold, who had learned the trade with his father, then took over, remained about two years in that stand and then in 1948 moved to the present location in the Smellie Block where he has a high class store such as one would look for in our cities.

    Notes:

Mr. Carl Grill worked at the trade here and did a bit of contracting but what is of more importance, historically at least, is that he taught his two sons, Charles and Henry, the trade in its several branches and made a good job of it.

In due course, Carl Grill retired from the trade to devote more time to his farm on the River Road and Charles and Henry started on their own, in partnership, under style: "Grill Bros." which name came to be known widely and favorably throughout a large area; and which partnership subsisted many years during the course of which the firm built more buildings in Hespeler than any other firm of contractors before them or since.

By the time they started, stone for building was being to some extent replaced by brick which by then had become available; and another type of building known as the rough cast house was being built because of its lower cost.

In Building a rough cast house a baloon frame was made and one inch wooden strips were nailed so far apart up and down and to these strips wooden lath, which had replaced the split board type, were nailed the thickness of a lath apart and the outside coat of plaster was applied starting at the top. The mortar which squeezed between the lath, when hard, held the plaster in position.

Grill Bros. adopted a different system. They put the lath the width of a lath apart and started plastering at the bottom, thereby filling the one inch space back of the lath with plaster. This made a wall of plaster outside the wood sheathing. This construction became known as the concrete plaster house and was so highly regarded from the standpoint of being a fire deterrent that some insurance companies gave a concession of ten cents in the rate from 75 to 65 cents.

The first building erected by the new firm of Grill Bros. was the office building at the corner of Queen and Cooper Street which was occupied on part of the ground floor as a store; and on the second story as a dwelling with kitchen and another room downstairs. William A. Kribs was the first tenant of these living quarters, into which he moved when he married.

In the Country round about, notably in Pinebush, there were a lot of Masons who worked with Grill Bros. when not engaged in building barn foundation walls, etc., among them being William Bartels, Charles Baumgartner, Abraham Brethauer, Henry Knack, Heinrich Kreig. Peter Each, Henry Bruder, Ernest Radke, Heinrich Kreig.
