    Mrs. John Rudell.

The death of Mrs. Hannah Clemens, relict of the late John Rudell, took place at noon on Saturday, at the home, 79 Scott street. While retiring on the previous night she suffered a paralytic stroke from the effects of which she never regained consciousness and she passed peacefully away to her rest. She had been in apparently good health previous to the stroke, which resulted in her death. The late Mrs. Rudell, was in her 75th year and up to a few years ago resided with her husband on a farm near Hespeler. Since her residence in Berlin, she made many friends particularly in St. Andrew's Church circles of which she was a faithful member. She was a kind and loving mother and her unexpected death was a terrible shock to the bereaved children. She is survived by six children, her husband having died some years ago: Messrs, William, Sault Ste. Marie and Mr. Albert E., Berlin; Miss Mary, who resided with her mother, Mrs. John McNally, town; Mrs_ Isaac Master, Roseville and Mrs. (Rev.) A. T. Wilkinson, of Japan. Miss Rose Rudell, the youngest daughter, died nearly two years ago. __________

    A FAMILIAR FIGURE GONE
    .

On Monday. Aug. 27th, Mr. Chas. Seigle, sr., aged 76 years, 9 months and 2 days, died after a brief but painful illness. The deceased gentleman was indeed a familiar figure in Hespeler and vicinity, having lived in the County of Waterloo for upwards of fifty years, over forty of the same being spent in this village. Deceased was a native of Weidenberg, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1833. After living there for four or five years he came to Canada and cast his lot in this county, living first in Berlin, then in Bridgeport and finally Hespeler. He was married twice, his first wife living but shortly after their union in marriage, leaving no issue. He married his second wife 39 years ago, who lives to mourn his loss, and seven children, all grown to manhood and womanhood, namely, Mr. Chas. Seigle, farmer; Mrs. W. H. Smith formerly of Toronto, of Colorado: Mrs. Elley, of Toronto and Mrs. Abrabam Ruddel, near the City of Guelph, also three unmarried daughters living at home. The funeral of the deceased gentleman took place on Tuesday, the 28th, and was largely attended, the Rev. Mr. Haigh, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiated and preached a pathetic funeral sermon at the late residence of the departed. Mr. Seigle is another example of what opportunities are open to young men in this young, but ever growing country. Coming here without means of gaining a livelihood beyond his own strength of character and manliness, he soon began to acquire considerable wealth until when he died it is safe to say he was one of the wealthiest men of these parts, leaving no less three three valuable farms, besides a very large amount of money secured by safe and remunerative securities. The MERCURY joins in sympathy with the many friends of the respected widow and family in their sad affliction.

On July 12th, 1847, Charles Siegle of the Village of Berlin, in the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, bought parts of lot one and two numbering from Jacob Hespeler's Mill yard containing one Rood one and three quarters perches of land from Robert Forbes, of the Village of Galt, in the Township of Dumfries in the County of Halton in the District of Gore and Province of Canada for the sum of seventy-eight pounds, two shillings and six pence of Lawful money of the Province of Canada (about three hundred and twelve dollars).

On this parcel of land, Charles Siegle built in 1847, the stone Building which has ever since been used as an Hotel under various names, including "Siegle's Tavern", "The Baker House", "Bowman's Hotel", "The Commercial Hotel" and its present appellation "The Hespeler Hotel".

There is still to be seen a square stone embedded in the Northerly wall which bears the inscription "C.S. 1847".

Even though it was at one time known as "Siegle's Tavern", I have been unable, so far, to satisfy myself that Mr. Siegle ever actually ran this Hotel, at any time.

On the Fourth day of July, 1843, one David Witmer and his wife conveyed to John Clemens, what we now know as The Milne Jamieson farm on the Town Line in Waterloo Township, stated in the deed to contain 134 acres, 2 roods and 16 perches more or less.

On the seventh day of June, 1849, This John Clemens conveyed the Jamieson Farm he had previously purchased from David Witmer, to Charles Siegle.

On the same day, June 7th, 1849, Charles Siegle conveyed the Lands he had purchased in 1847, from Robert Forbes including, of course, the Hotel and other buildings he had meantime erected on the Land, to this same John Clemens. Then Siegle moved on to the farm and Clemens started in to run the Hotel.

Clemens does not appear to have had much luck operating the Hotel and found himself in financial difficulties and until, finally, under an order of Her Majesty's County Court of the United Counties of Wellington, Waterloo and Grey, the Sheriff, George John Grange, sold his property on the sixteenth day of August, 1853, and Charles Siegle bought the hotel property back and obtained from the Sheriff a deed Dated October 14th, 1853 (See B2 Folios 682 and 683).

Now Siegle had both the farm where he lived and the Hotel. He is said to have rented the Hotel property until on the nineteenth day of June, 1856, he sold it to William Baker of the Township of East Flamborough, in the County of Wentworth, Yeoman, who operated the Hotel until his death in 1868, when it passed to succeeding Bakers.

    St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church

The congregation was organized on December 1, 1834 by the Rev. F.W. Bindemann (1834-1838). Worship services were held in homes and barns until the Lutheran Rudel brothers erected a stone building for this purpose at the corner of what is now Queenston Road and Montrose Street. The premises were also made available to other congregations when they were first established in Preston. Land for a Lutheran church was purchased in 1837 and a frame church was built in 1839 on King Street on the site of the present St. Peter's. This fifty foot by forty foot church with its sixty foot tower was Preston's first church, called Christ Church, and was free for the use of all denominations. The building was used until replaced by the present-day stone church. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on August 21, 1887. The old frame church had been relocated before then to a lot on the corner of Queen and Church Streets where the congregation worshipped until the new stone church was ready for consecration in 1889. Weekly evening services in the English language began at that time.
A new parsonage was built in 1913 on land behind the church, and renovations and improvements have been made to the interior of the church over the years. A new Christian Education wing was built in 1957 (cornerstone: January 27, 1957) and dedicated in 1958. Pastors who followed F.W. Bindemann were Revs. J. Huettner (1838-1849) who was the first regular pastor, F. Hildebrandt (1849-1850), Jacob Hoelsche (1850-1854), and Rev. Immanuel Wurster who served the congregation from 1854-1881. Rev. Wurster also ministered to St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hespeler.1

Michael Bergy erected in 1830 the first saw-mill and small foundry which he located a little north of the present R. Forbes Co. site, near where a small spring creek joins the Speed. This streamlet was in those days considerably larger than its present volume. The writer's father told of having fished trout from it in his boyhood. The ruins of the old saw-mill, which has been described by some as a pail-factory and foundry, was a favorite playhouse for the boys a few decades back. Mr. W. A. Kribs, ex M. P. P. recalls the presence of old foundry patterns lying about the place of his boyhood days.

We must continue with the activities of Mr. Bergy who brought the second saw-mill in Bergy-town into existence. it was perhaps with the commencement of this second venture that the name of the place was changed to New Hope, but by the year 1840, Mr. Bergy's hope or interest in the second mill had faded to such an extent that he resold the property to Abram C. Clemens, from whom he had purchased the land. This second saw-mill was the one included in Jacob Hespeler's purchase. it was situated where another streamlet enters the Speed, the site being afterwards occupied by Mr. Hespeler's grist-mill near the stone dam which Hespeler placed in front of Bergy's wooden dam..
