Hallman, Eli S. (1866-1955)

"Eli S. Hallman: minister and bishop of the Sharon Mennonite Church at Guernsey, Saskatchewan. Field Secretary for Goshen College, and bishop in congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, was born 26 February 1866 in Waterloo, Ontario, and died at Akron, Pennsylvania, on 25 August 1955. He married Melinda Clemens (18 May 1873-12 February 1956) on 9 April 1893. They were the parents of five children.

Hallman joined the Methodist church in Ontario at the age of 21, but joined the Mennonite Church following a revival conducted by the Mennonite evangelist, J. S. Coffman. He was ordained as a minister at the First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, Ontario on 17 June 1897. During the first seven years of his ministry, he spent the greater part of his time conducting evangelistic services in Ontario and parts of the United States. Then, in 1905, he agreed to accompany a group of Mennonites who were moving West to the Quill Lake Mennonite Reserve in Saskatchewan. He served as the minister of the new Mennonite congregation at Guernsey, Saskatchewan, and in 1907 he was ordained in Ontario as a bishop to have oversight of the newly organized Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference .

In western Canada, and later in the southern United States, Hallman demonstrated love and acceptance of ministers of other denominations, especially the General Conference ministers of nearby communities. He was also a strong supporter and became a member of the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization which facilitated the immigration of more than twenty-thousand Mennonites from the Soviet Union to Canada in the 1920s. His openness to other Mennonite groups brought him many invitations to take part in special services, but he never apologized for the practices of his own congregation and conference. He tried to be firm and exercise redemptive love, and was biblical in his teaching. He greatly enjoyed teaching in the district winter Bible schools which he strongly supported.

Hallman accepted an appointment to serve as Field Secretary of Goshen College in 1912, but in 1916 the family moved to Grand Bay, Alabama, for health reasons, and a little later to Allemands, Louisiana, where he assisted in the formation of a new congregation. The family returned to Guernsey, Saskatchewan, in 1919, where he again served the Sharon Mennonite Church until 1928 when the Hallman family, again for health reasons, moved to Falfurrias and later in 1932 to Tuleta, Texas. There he served congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas as bishop until his retirement in 1951. Throughout his life he demonstrated a great interest in evangelism and in missions. Two of his five children became missionaries in Argentina. After his retirement he lived in Akron, Pennsylvania, where he died on 25 August 1955 at the age of 89."

Hallman, -- Eli S. , son of the late Abraham and Mary (Schmitt) Hallman, was born Feb. 25, 1866, in Waterloo Co., Ont. ; entered into rest Aug. 25, 1955, at his home in Akron, Pa. , after an illness of eight weeks; aged 89 y. 6 m. On April9, 1893, he was married to Melinda Clemens, who shared with him life's joys and sorrows for 62 years. He accepted Christ as his Saviour in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church. Throughout his life he served the Lord faithfully and his consecrated service to the Church brought the blessings of a rich and fruitful ministry. On June 17, 1898, at the age of 31, he was ordained to the Christian ministry at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. His early years in the ministry (from 1897 to 1907) were spent in evangelistic and missionary activities as well as in Bible conference work in various sections of the Church. He retained this deep interest in missionary endeavors throughout his entire life. In 1905 he helped to establish a Mennonite settlement in the western part of Canada near Guernsey, Sask. In May of that year a congregation was organized which became known as the Sharon Mennonite Church. He preached the first sermon for the homesteaders in Deacon Aaron Biehn's tent on May 7, 1905, using Heb.11: 8-10 as his text. Besides taking care of his regular Sunday preaching appointments he spent much of that first year at Saskatchewan in locating homesteads and lands for settlers as well as assisting the new settlers in setting up their homesteads. Because of his busy life of service in behalf of others during these days, his neighbors offered by turns to plow the ten acres on his homestead which were required for homestead duties. In November of 1907, he was ordained as bishop by the Ontario Conference to have the oversight of the newly organized Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference. Later he served as field secretary for Goshen College between the years of 1912 and 1916. Because of health reasons he and his family moved to Grand Bay, Ala. , in 1916 and later to Allemands, La., where he assisted in the formation of a new Mennonite congregation. In 1920, it became possible for him and his family to return tothe Guernsey section of Saskatchewan and the Sharon congregation where he served the Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference until 1928. In that year he took up residence in Falfurrias and later Tuleta, Texas, where he remained until his retirement in 1951. For these twenty-three years he served as bishop in congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Since his retirement he lived in Akron, Pa. , and was a member of the Monterey Mennonite Church. He served on the Mennonite Publication Board and the Mennonite Board of Education. During the early 1920's he was a member of the Colonization Board of Canada. Because of his wide experience and sound Christian judgment he was bale to give guidance and counsel which have been greatly appreciated by younger men in the ministry. He maintained a Church-wide interest and up to the year before his death he was present in district conference sessions. Surviving are his wife, Melinda Clemens Hallman, and these children (George B., White Fox, Sask.; William E., Argentina, S. A. ; Abram P., Akron, Pa; and Anna-Mrs. B. Frank Byler, Argentina, S. A. The eldest son (Clemens) preceded him in death in 1927. Also surviving are 2 sisters (Sarah of Josiah Cassel, Preston, Ont.; and Lucinda-Mrs. Ephraim Snider, Kitchener, Ont.), one brother (J. Riley Hallman, Toronto, Ont.) , 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 27 at the Monterey Mennonite Church, Lancaster Co., Pa., with Amos S. Horst and Maurice W. Landis officiating. A further service was held Aug. 29 in the Cressman Mennonite Church Breslau, Ont., conducted by Oscar Burkholder, Lewis Fretz, and others. Interment was made in the Cressman Church Cemetery.

Hallman, Melinda, daughter of the late George and Salome Clemens, was born May 18, 1873 at Breslau, Ont.; passed away at the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt, Ont., of a heart attack, Feb. 12, 1956; aged 82 y. 8 m. 26 d. On Aug. 9,1893, she was united in marriage to Eli S. Hallman, who preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1955, after living together for 62 years. She was a resident of the Fairview Mennonite Home, Preston, Ont., less than three weeks prior to her passing. At the age of sixteen she accepted Christ as her Saviour, and united with the Zion Methodist Church, Breslau, Ont. Two years later she transferred her membership to the Mennonite Church during the time of John S. Coffman revivals in Ontario. She faithfully served her Master in various communities in Canada, and in the southern part of the United States as companion to her husband in his ministry; and in cheerful encouragement to those whom she contacted. Surviving are the following children (George B., White Fox, Sask.; William E., Argentina, S. A.; Abram P., Akron, Pa.; and Anna-Mrs. B. Frank Byler, Argentina), also 14 grand children, and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Clemens S., on Aug. 23, 1927. Funeral services were held Feb.15 at the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, with Oscar Burkholder, Glen Esh, and Howard Good officiating. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

CLEMENS.--On the 8th of June, 1892, at High Banks, near Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., of neuralgic rheumatism, followed by general debility, Bro. Geo. H. Clemens, aged 60 years, 10 months and 13 days. His remains were laid to rest in the burying ground at the Cressman Mennonite church near Breslau, on the 11th, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Bish. Elias Weber in German from Acts 9: 6, and Pre. Noah Stauffer in English from 2 Cor. 5: 1. Bro. Clemens was twice married. His first wife, Sister Salome Bowman, with whom he was joined in matrimony on the 4th of February 1851 died about 10 years ago. This union was blessed with nine children, of whom seven are still living. On the 15th of January, 1884, he was married to Sister Catharine Weichel.

Bro. Clemens was confined to his bed the greater part of the spring. At times his bodily sufferings were severe, but he possessed that sweet consolation which a firm trust in his Savior gives to the believer. His mind was fixed upon Jesus, and he was permitted to obtain a glimpse of that beautiful land for which he longed and of which he spoke repeatedly. He rejoiced in a crucified Redeemer, and enjoyed telling others of the grace of God. In practical piety and love for the cause of Christ he leaves a beautiful example for all. He spoke guardedly and encouragingly to those who were willing to accept Christ, and to them as well as to the brethren in the ministry, he was an able support and sympathizing friend, He was a true helping brother of the family of the church, as many both in and out of the ministry, can testify. The church of which he was a dearly beloved member feels deeply the loss it sustains, but none so much as the members of the family to whom he especially attached. They have lost a beloved companion, an affectionate father, the church a pillar, the community a kind neighbor. May the missionary spirit that was in him, burn in us and influence others to accept the Savior in whom he trusted and died. Nearly all of his family have accepted their Savior. May God comfort the bereaved hearts and give us grace to walk faithfully in the way of the Lord that we may meet our loved ones who have crossed death's river before us.

CLEMENS.- On the 24th of June, in Waterloo county, Ontario, Salome, wife of George H. Clemens, aged 51 years, 10 months and 29 days. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church, and beloved by all who knew her. She leaves 7 children and a sorrowing husband to mourn her departure. The remains were buried at Cressmans in the presence of many friends

Joseph Hallman, "was born September 15th, 1808. In 1831 he was married to Susannah, daughter of Henry M. and Sarah (Bergey) Clemmer. She was born December 29th, 1810, and died February 15th, 1854. In 1856 he was again married to Elizabeth, daughter of John Clemmer. She was born October 29th, 1820, and died March 27th, 1860. In 1866 he was again married to Magdalena, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Bechtel) Eby. She was born December 12th, 1813, and died April 2nd, 1886. See No. 2371 and also Nos. 926 to 951. After Mr. Hallman's first marriage he moved to Manheim, on the farm now possessed by Peter Geiger, where he resided four years, then he moved on the farm now owned by Samuel Tohman, a little west of New Dundee, where they resided one year, then he moved to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, about one and a half miles south-west of New Dundee, where he still resides and is enjoying good health. His family consisted of fourteen children, all of whom, save the youngest, are of first wife."

Rev. George R. Schmidt "son of John and Catharine (Riehl) Schmidt, was born in Muhlhausen, Alsace, November 23rd, 1809, and died September 12th, 1882. His death was caused by the upsetting of his buggy, at the railway crossing a little east of Baden, from which he received injuries proving fatal a few hours after its happening. He had an older brother named John and a sister named Catharine. His parents suffered greatly during the wars of Napoleon I and again during the year 1817 when there was almost a total failure of crops in Europe and America, thus causing great scarcity of food for both man and beast. During these trials the father died. His death took place August, 1817. In 1819 the mother was married again to Jacob Linhart. After the old homestead which the father had erected was sold, the parents moved to a place called Bischols, some miles distant from their former home. The second union was blessed with four children, named Jacob, Margaret, Christian and Maria. On March 6th, 1828, they left the old country and emigrated to America and arrived at Buffalo, New York on May 6th of the same year. From Buffalo they came to Canada where the father rented a farm. The two sons, John and George, worked among the neighbors to earn money to assist their step-father. In January, 1829, these two sons with but 50 cents in their pockets, made a journey on foot over 100 miles. They came to Waterloo (their parents resided in Welland County, not very far from Buffalo) where John engaged himself to Jacob Schneider (farmer and miller at Waterloo) for one year and George engaged himself to Joseph Goldschmitt of Baden for 3 months at the rate of $8.00 per month. He worked on the saw mills situated where now the Baden woollen mills are. After being in the county for several months he returned home with his and his brother John's wages. This money was given to their parents. In October, 1829, he returned to Waterloo and engaged himself to Rev. Benjamin Eby for one year at the rate of $10.00 per month. Later on he and his brother John purchased lots Nos. 12 and 13, in the township of Wilmot, consisting of four hundred acres, of which they gave one hundred acres to their father. George was engaged in clearing land for various parties at the rate of $10.00 per acre. In August, 1831, he returned home where he was married on the 14th day of the same month to Salome Becker. After his marriage he again came to Waterloo and finished the "chops" he had commenced the previous spring. In October he and his brother John who had been in the services of Jacob Schneider for several years, returned home, George to fetch his wife and John to get married to the woman of his choice, namely, Margaret Roth who resided in Buffalo. This marriage took place November, 1831. In 1832 they all returned to their farms in Wilmot Township where the mother died in July, 1851, aged 68 years. Catharine, the only sister of George and John Schmidt, was born March 25th, 1814, and was married December 25th, 1835, to Martin Anthes. She has a family of five children, of whom three are still living. John was born November 1st, 1806, and died March 12th, 1882. He had a family of twelve children, of whom seven are still living. George was ordained minister of the church of his choice, the Mennonite, April 12th, 1840. He was a true and faithful worker for His Master. Many an eloquent sermon did he preach and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. It proved a great loss to the church to lose such an active and able worker as he was, but let us hope that our earthly loss may prove to be his eternal gain. He was married to Salome Becker who was born February 28th, 1811, and died November 21st, 1887. They had a family of thirteen children"

Died, on the 14th of September, near Baden, Waterloo Co., Ont., Pre. George R. Schmit, in the 73rd year of his age. He had been to the Post office to get his paper, and as he was ready to return, his horse became frightened by a passing train of cars, threw him out of the buggy against a fence, with such force that three of his ribs were broken, from the effect of which he died in about three hours. He was buried on the 17th, followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Services were held by M. Bowman at the house, and by J. Woolner, and Jacob Mensch (The latter from Montgomery Co., Pa.,) at the meeting house, from the text Heb. 13: 17. He leaves a sorrowing widow, four sons and five daughters to mourn his sudden departure.Bro. Smith was a zealous Christian, and an active laborer in the vineyard of the Lord. He was a man of forethought and decision of mind. When he preached, the gospel gave no uncertain sound. He was a bold, fearless speaker and one who carried his audience with him while at the same time his heart was filled with love toward all. He was one of these men who could not be driven about by every wind of doctrine, but amid all the overturnings and religious convulsions which characterized his day. Bro. Smith remained steadfast and faithful in his calling, and immoveable in his faith. In the death of Bro. Smith and Bro. Sherk, the church in Canada has lost two veterans in the cause of Christ, two pillars in the church, whose active and devoted labors will be long remembered. May their successors in their respective places, labor for the cause with the same devotion, the same zeal, and the church continue to prosper and be blessed.

Schmitt, George R. (1809-1882)

George R. Schmitt: minister and farmer; born in 1809 in Mulhausen, Alsace to Lutheran parents. In 1828 he came with his parents and at least one sibling to North America, first living in Welland County, Ontario. In August 1831 he married Salome Becker and they settled on a farm near what became Baden, Ontario. One of his grandchildren was Jacob B. "J.B." Smith , Bible scholar and first president of Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, VA. George R. Schmitt died in an accident on 14 September 1882.
Although of Lutheran heritage, it is said that George Schmitt worked for a time as a farm laborer for Bishop Benjamin Eby, and then embraced the Mennonite faith. For some years he was a farmer and schoolteacher. He was ordained as the first minister for the Shantz Mennonite Church congregation near Baden on 12 April 1840 or in February 1847; the date is uncertain because of conflicting evidence.
George Schmitt was apparently a remarkable orator; one biographical sketch said "his clear ringing tones, with 'silver-tongue' effect could readily be heard by overflow audiences which frequently greeted his public ministry." Others also referred to him as a "forceful" preacher. Because of his oratorical gifts he often spoke in Amish and Lutheran congregations in the area. During the U.S. Civil War, George Schmitt, together with David Sherk, made preaching visits through Pennsylvania and Virginia; and later he made a similar tour through the Central States.
Schmitt died as the result of an accident when in town to fetch a newspaper at the Baden post office. His horses became frightened by a passing train, and threw him from his buggy against a fence. He died of his injuries within three hours.
George R. Schmitt's major service occurred at a time when pastoral activity was not well documented. Nonetheless he had a ministry that extended far beyond his local community. Several times he participated in ministerial delegations from Ontario that sought to bring peace to other parts of the Mennonite Church that were in conflict. This role indicates his ability, and the stature he had within the church's leadership.

Abraham S. Clemens, "the youngest son of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1790. On May 19, 1812, he was married to Rachel Dierstein who was born November 15th, 1791, and died December 3rd, 1864. In 1825 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, about one mile west of Breslau, on lot No. 123, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until 1837 when he purchased part of lot No. 111, about two miles south of Breslau. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place December 25, 1867. A good many years before his death he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church, a position for which he was well qualified. Many a wholesome advice did he give to his congregation. His practice was to visit all the members of his field of labor twice a year and during such visits he would give words of cheer and comfort to many a weary pilgrim. He encouraged them to look to Christ in all their trials and troubles and reminded them of the many cheering promises given unto all who put their trust in him who died for all. To them was born a family of eight children"

OBITUARY FOR ABRAHAM S. CLEMMENS

Died on the first day of the recent Christmas holidays, that is on December 25th last, Abraham S. Clemmens died in Waterloo township, Waterloo County, Canada West of apoplexy. He was formerly of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1790 in Lower Salford township, in the aforementioned Montgomery county, and died at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. He entered the holy state of matrimony on May 19, 1812 with Rachel Derstein of Bucks county, and emigrated to Canada with his family in the year 1825. He was happily married for approximately 52 years, and a widower for 3 years and 22 days. He sired 8 children, 6 of whom are still living, namely 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His descendants, with 51 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, number consequently, 89 souls. On the day he died, he arose healthy and happy, sat down to breakfast after he had directed a loud and earnest prayer to the Giver of all good. He shoved aside a coffee cup which was sitting near him, and reached for the jug, to pour himself a drink of water, when suddenly, his hand fell. His son George, who had also just risen from the table, hurried over to help his father; his soul wanted to take leave of his body, and no human effort was of any help to him. He was speedily carried to his bed; but, he did not open his eyes again; his speech became weak and during the night that followed, approximately at 11.30 p.m., he slept away to his Lord. The deceased was generally respected and loved, and after he had accomplished much good, and ,we hope, useful things during his active life, he peacefully paid the debt of nature. For many years, he was the head of the Mennonite congregation there, and his eye was ever watchful over his flock. On the 29th instant, his body was taken to Cressman's Mennonite meeting-house, accompanied by a large number of friends and acquaintances, and committed to mother-earth, on which occasion the Rev. Hagey (at the deceased's house), and the Rev. Enoch Derstein (at the grave), spoke words of comfort and instruction to the crowd present, based on the text in the latter part of Verse 12, Chapter 4 of the Book of Amos: " Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, 0 Israel!"
