After an illness extending over some months, Mr. Jas. S. Black died at his late residence, Manley Street, Ayr, on Monday morning, Nov. 7, at 8 o'clock. Deceased was in his 72nd year, being born in Dovermount, Scotland, on June 8th, 1839, and was numbered amongst the oldest residents of the village, having made his home in Ayr for many years. Two remarks passed within the hearing of the writer, will beat attest Mr. Black's popularity, and the respect in which he was held. Ne was, "He was a valuable man to the town in many respects." This could be applied to his business relations with the Public, acting as adviser to many and filling the position of Notary Public and conveyancer; or to his interest in church work, being a staunch and consistent member of Stanley St. Church where he will be greatly missed by a congregation in which he always took a deep interest. The other remark "a good all-round man," had reference more particularly to his interest in educational affairs, having been a member and chairman of the School Board for years; t his social and genial qualities as a companion and to the active support he have to all legitimate sports and amusements and anything that would tend to add to the enjoyment of the people., Mr. Black was twice married, first to Miss Christina Kennedy who died some years ago, leaving one son, Sutherland, now stationed at Elbow, Sask., and later to Margaret Muir, who predeceased him a few months ago. In addition to Sutherland, above mentioned, three brothers and a sister survive, viz., George in California, Robert at Wroxeter, John L., Ayr, and Mrs. Robert Hope, Alberta. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of friends.

The pallbearers were Messrs. John G. Watson, Chas. McGeorge, David McColl, John McNab, A.O. Nickerson Thos. Mitchell. The services were conducted by Rev. D. I. Ellison.
