    Notes:

Death came very suddenly, Dec. 10th, after only a day's illness, to Mr. George Maurer, senior, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Koehn, Berlin. Deceased would have reached his 89th birthday had he lived until the 29th day of this month. He was sick only one day, death being due to the infirmities of advanced age. He was born in Germany, coming to this country and living for a number of years at North Woolwich on a farm. Nearly 20 years ago, he retired from farming, making his home in Elmira. Five weeks ago he went to Berlin to stay with Mrs. Koehn. Seven children are left to mourn the loss of their father. They are: Michael of Paisley; Mrs. Andrew Filsinger, Berlin; Mrs. Henry Bolender, Elmira; Mrs. Martin Straub, Berlin; George, Woolwich; Mrs. Otto Kehn [sic], Berlin and Mrs. Chris Dreisinger, Elmira. The funeral took place on Saturday last, the remains being buried in the North Woolwich cemetery.

    Notes:

The report of the death of Valentine Schaefer last Friday afternoon was received with deep regret by the whole community, as only two days previous he was about town in the best of health. On Thursday he took suddenly ill and on Friday afternoon passed peacefully away in his 71st year. Deceased was born in Hessia, Germany, and came to Canada in 1853, settling in the township of Woolwich. He was married twice. The first marriage was blessed with 10 children, four of whom preceded him in death. In January 1874 he was married to Mary Grube and this union was blessed with 13 children, 6 sons and 7 daughters, who with the widow survive to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. His remains were laid to rest in the village cemetery on Wednesday afternoon and the funeral was attended by a large circle of friends. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Meyers, who preached an impressive sermon in the Baptist church, of which congregation deceased had been a devoted member. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
