Waterloo historian, Fred Shinn, 85, died

Fred Shinn of 230 Dawson St., died Oct. 5 at the K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was taken there a few days earlier after he collapsed in Waterloo Square. He was 85. A native of St. Louis, Miss., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kelly Shinn. He was a year old when the family moved to New Hamburg, then to Toronto and later to Amherst N.S. In 1895 they came to Waterloo where he lived most of his life since. He escaped death twice in his early years. He was five years old when he became seriously ill with scarlet fever. The doctor said he wouldn't survive the night. Later another doctor, treating him for an ear infection, told him he couldn't survive his teens. With that dour prognosis went warnings against all sporting activities, if he were to gain even those few years. He opted instead to enjoy whatever time was left to him and played baseball, hockey and cricket. His first job was in his father's undertaking business. When this was sold in the late 1900s [date is a misprint; could be 1908], he returned to St. Louis where he spent three years in an art store. After two years in Toronto, where he worked for the Robert Simpson Co., he became clerk in Waterloo Post Office. Five years later he returned to Toronto to work for Dominion Express, now the Canadian Pacific Railways. In 1921 he joined the Prudential Insurance Co and continued with the firm until his retirement in 1950. Afterwards, he spent some time with the city assessment department. An avid bowler, he liked to bowl 10-pins daily. He was a well-known local historian and wrote a weekly column on this topic for The Chronicle for several years. His wife, the former Irma Koening, died in 1936. He is survived by two sons, Earl of Waterloo and Ronald of Ottawa, three daughters, Mrs. George (Paula) Taylor and Mrs. Nellis [sic] (Esther) Lishman, both of Kitchener, and Mrs. John (Cora) Eix of Waterloo, one brother, one sister, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
