    Ezra E. Eby

Ezra E. Eby succumbed on Tuesday, at eleven o'clock in the morning to the effects of the attack he suffered the Friday before last. He was a son of Isaak Eby and was born August 9, 1850. In his youth, he educated himself for the profession of a teacher and pursued this profession for over 30 years at various schools in this county. For some years, also, he was active with the late Caspar Hett at a printing and publication firm in Berlin. He was in demand as a writer and prepared many family registers. A few years ago, he published also a history of the first settlers of this county and their descendants in two large volumes, which is widely known. In Erbsville, he ran a small store, as well as pursuing the teaching profession. Besides his widow, Mary Ann, nee Clemmer, he is survived by three sons and one daughter. Amazingly, he died on the same day and at the same time at which his father was born, 93 years ago. Honour to his memory!

Isaac Eby, "the eldest son of Benjamin Eby, was born in Berlin, July 30th, 1808. He spent his single days at home on his father's farm. On October 30th, 1831, he was married to Veronica, daughter of John and Mary (Shantz) Shoemaker, who was born February 2nd, 1815, and died July 20th, 1894. In November of the same year of their marriage they moved on their farm, situated two and one-half miles east of Berlin, being the north-west part of lot No. 120, German Company's Tract, in the township and county of Waterloo, containing by admeasurement 188 acres. The farm was, with the exception of a few acres where their first house and log stables stood, heavily timbered with all kinds of hard wood. Wolves, bears and deer were quite numerous then, and the howling of wolves was their evening band. Here they lived for nearly forty-three years. A few months before his death he disposed of his farm to Mr. Moses Betzner. Of the numerous assistants they had on their farm George Schmidt, afterwards a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church, James Potter, now residing in Berlin, Jacob Becker, Barbara Rudy, now Mrs. Valentine Knechtel and mother of Rev. S. R. Knechtel, and Martha Allardyce, now of Toronto, were their favorites. These were always considered as members of their family. To Isaac Eby and his wife was born a family of ten children"

Eby.-At her residence, King St. East, Berlin, Ontario, at 9-50 A.M., July 20, 1894, Sister Veronica Eby, widow of the late Bro. Isaac Eby, aged 79 y. 5 m. 18 d. Funeral on the 23d at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to the Mennonite Cemetery. Services were conducted in English by S. R. Knechtel, (Evangelical) from John 11:25, 26, and in German by Bro. Sam'l Bowman, from 2 Cor. 3:1. A large concourse of friends and relatives had gathered to pay their last tributes of respect to the deceased sister.

Many could not get into the spacious meeting house. Thus one by one the first generations of Canadian born settlers in Waterloo county pass away. Her husband, Bro. Isaac Eby, was the first white child born in Waterloo county. Sis Eby was an earnest Christian, and her place in the Eby Mennonite M. H. in Berlin was very seldom vacant at the time of meeting. Since the death of Bro. Eby she had been living in town. She leaves a family of children grandchildren and great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Several of her children preceded her to the grave. Peace to her ashes.

CLEMMER - On the 9th of January, 1893, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., Bro. Abram C. Clemmer, aged 77 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was buried on the 12th in Eby's graveyard. Funeral services by Bish. D. Wismer at the home, at the meeting house by Bish. E. Weber in the German language from John 5: 24, 25 and Noah Stauffer in English from Rom. 6: 26. Bro. Clemmer was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., Sept. 17, 1815; in 1825 he came to Canada with his parents. He united with the Mennonite church in his youth and was ever a faithful member, serving for a long time as chorister of Eby's congregation. He also took a deep interest in Sunday school work, and as long as health permitted took an active part in the work. About six years ago he was affected by an epileptic stroke from the effects of which he continued to fail in health until about a year ago, when a second stroke brought on fostering of the brain, since which he has failed more or less rapidly until the Lord called him up higher. His constant trust in all his affliction, was in God and he waited patiently for the call that should free him from all that is mortal. He leaves a sorrowing wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters and many relatives and friends to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, a beloved father and an esteemed brother and friend.

    Notes:

Clemmer. Caroline, (twin) daughter of Morgan L. and Harriet (Babcock) Hermance, was born near Paris, Brant Co., Ont., July 2, 1828. She was married in 1845 to Abraham C. Clemmer, who was born in Bedminster, Bucks Co., Pa., Sept. 17, 1815, and came to Canada with his parents in early childhood. They settled on his fathers farm two miles east of Berlin, Ont., where they lived until Bro. Clemmers death, Jan. 9, 1893. They united with the Mennonite Church in their youth. Some years after the husbands death, Sister Clemmer made her home in Berlin with her eldest daughter, Marianne, widow of the late Ezra E. Eby. Sister Clemmer was blessed with a spirit of good will toward all, and she "scatered(sic) smiles and sunshine all along her way," cheering, blessing and brightening those around her. The evening of her life was peaceful, and she was surrounded with loving friends who were happy to minister to her wants. A few weeks ago she had an attack of bowel trouble, followed by a severe case of hernia, from which she gradually sank until the end came Oct. 15, 1908, she having reached the ripe old age of 80 years, 3 months and 13 days. Her five sons and three daughters survive to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Beside these and her grandchildren she leaves a host of friends, young and old, who, while they mourn, have the consolation of knowing that after a well-spent life she has entered into eternal rest. She was buried on the 17th in the East End Mennonite Cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services by Noah Stauffer, of Strasburg, Ont. Text, John 14:1-4.
