    Russell Thomas of 400 Wellington St., N., Kitchener, died on Thursday at his home at the age of 78.

    Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 3, 1891, at Bloomingdale. He was a lifelong resident of the Twin City area.

    He was employed with Hogg Fuel and Supply Co. Ltd, for 35 years prior to his retirement, in 1958. He was a member of First Mennonite Church and served overseas in the First World War with the Canadian 133rd Infantry Battalion and attained the rank of sergeant.

    He was predeceased by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Thomas, and his wife, the former Clara Shantz; two sons, Edward and William and one daughter, Clara, three brothers, Harold, Warren and Arthur and one sister, Mrs. Albert (Jessie) Moser.

    Surviving are five sons, Walter, Kenneth and Grant, all of Kitchener and Milton and Russell, both of Ayr; three daughters, Mrs. John (Lillian) Neilly of Kitchener, Mrs. Edward (Barbara) Giilck of Conestogo and Mrs. Harry (Mary Lou) Falkenstern of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Jane) Gies of New Dundee and Mrs. Agnes Livoch of Detroit, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

    Mrs. Russell Arthur Thomas, 56, of 222 Madison Ave. South, died today at her home after a brief illness.
    Born in Woolwich Township. she was the former Clara Mabel Shantz, a daughter of Mrs. E. Gingrich of Shakespeare, and the late Harry Shantz. She moved to her present residence

    in 1943. Mrs. Thomas was a member of First Mennonite Church.

    Her marriage to Mr. Thomas. who survives, took place in Kitchener in 1924.

    Surviving are five sons, Milton and Russell Jr., both of Ayr, Walter of Wellesley, Grant of Bridgeport and Kenneth of Kitchener; four daughters, Mrs. John (Lillian) Neilly, Mrs. Ed. ward (Barbara Giilck and Mrs. Harry Mary Lou Falkenstern, all of Kitchener: two sisters. Mrs. Melvin Gingrich of New Hamburg and Mrs. Daniel Schmitt of Kitchener, and 20 grandchildren

    Elijah Snyder Thomas - Elijah Snyder Thomas, 95, of 369 King St. East, died Thursday at K-W Hospital. Mr. Thomas was born Oct. 8, 1861, in Rosedale. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Mr. Thomas was retired. His wife, the former Lydia Jane Underwood, whom he married May 4, 1886, in Linwood, died in 1936. Surviving are two sons, Warren of Kitchener, Russell of new Dundee; two daughters, Mrs. Albert (Jessie) Moser of Kitchener, Mrs. Albert (Jane) Gies of Petersburg, 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Three sons, a daughter, two brothers and two sisters predeceased him. The body is at the Keffer Funeral Home where the funeral will be conducted Saturday at 3: 30 pm by Rev. J.H. Getz of Calvary Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church. Burial will be in the First Mennonite Cemetery.

    Shantz. - Henry D., son of Mr. and Mrs. David Shantz, was born near Mannheim, Ont.; died at his home in Wellesley, Ont., Jan. 21, 1946; aged 64 y. 10 m. His first wife, Catherine Fry, preceded him 17 years ago. In 1932 he married Barbara Bender, who survives. He was a faithful member of Shantz Church. Surviving besides his wife are 4 daughters: (Elvina -- Mrs. Wesley Metzger, Elmira; Clara -- Mrs. Russel Thomas, Kitchener; Lillian -- Mrs. Daniel Schmitt, Waterloo; Dorothy at home); one brother (Rudy, Hespeler, Ont.); and 2 sisters (Mrs. Jacob Fry, Williamsburg, and Mrs. Herbert Klemmer, Rosetown, Sask.). Eleven grandchildren also survive. Six sons preceded him. Funeral services and burial were conducted by L. H. Witmer and C. F. Derstine at Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden, Ont.

    William B. Thomas, "son of Ezra and Elizabeth (Bomberger) Thomas, was born in Dundas, Wentworth County, Onario, February 7th, 1825. In spring, 1836, he was adopted by Peter Erb who resided on the old 'Erb Farm' about two miles north of Bridgeport. In 1843, when he was eighteen years of age, he came to Jonas C. Shantz's, Wilmot Township, where he was engaged as farm hand for one year. From here he went to Copetown, Wentworth County, where he served his apprenticeship at the shoemaking trade for three years with one Jasper Dresser. In 1847 he returned to Waterloo County and engaged himself to Mr. John Salyards of Preston to work at his trade, in whose service he remained one year. In fall of 1849 he engaged the Reist school (S.S. No. 14) and in 1850 he taught the River Bank School (S.S. No. 15). On June 10th, 1851, he married to Hannah, daughter of John and Judith (Bingeman) Schneider. After his marriage he worked at his trade for three years, having his shop in his present residence. After the expiration of the three years, he, in 1854, commenced to teach again and taught almost steadily up to 1884 when he retired from the profession. He is now on the superannuated list, receiving a yearly pension of $132. He resides at his old home near Bloomingdale where he has spent many a happy day in his life, and is quite well yet considering his age and the great amount of mental work he has performed in his time. Many good wishes for his happiness in the evening of his far advanced life. (Since writing the biography of Mr. Thomas he died suddenly, May 8th, 1895) To him and his wife was born a family of six children"

    On June 10, 1851, he married Hannah, daughter of John and Judith (Bingeman) Schneider of near Bloomingdale. On Oct. 16, 1852, he acquired from his father-in- law John Schneider, two acres of land in Lot #71 G.C.T. -Rosendale. The 1861 Census shows him living in a one storey round log house built in 1845. This house was at some later date converted into a storey and half and covered with boards. A small barn was also erected. He worked at his trade for three years, having his shop in his residence. In 1854 he commenced to teach again. He taught in Bloomingdale S.S.#12 - 1850, 1859 and in 1867. He also acted as Enumerator for District No. 4 in the 1861 Census. He purchased 31 acres and 17 perches of land in Lot #71 from John Schafer April 11, 1874, and along with his teaching, farmed until he disposed of this acreage Dec. 20, 1878, to Henry B. Wahl. He taught almost steadily in various township schools up to 1884 when he retired. He was superannuated, receiving a yearly pension of $132. They resided here until their deaths - William B. Thomas -May 8, 1895 and his wife Hannah, Aug. 29, 1907. Both buried in the Mennonite cemetery, Bloomingdale. They had six children:

    According to a descendant, this doll belonged to Hannah Schneider (Snider) Thomas (1831-1907). She was the granddaughter of "Yoch" Schneider, a pioneer from Pennsylvania. The donor, Altie Witmer, was a niece of one of Hannah's sons, John S. Thomas.
