    Notes:

Jane Howard and she was born in England some time between 1803 and 1807. I believe she and Eli Bailey married in England and immigrated to Westmorland County in New Brunswick in about 1825. She would have been in her late teens or very early twenties. They lived in New Brunswick for seven years and had three children: Daniel (1827), George (1830) and Sophia (1832).

Eli and Jane then moved to Ontario in 1834 and settled in Galt. Over the next twelve years they had four more children: Samuel (1835), William (1839), James (1842) and John Henry (1847). Eli was a blacksmith and a carpenter by trade and I know he taught carpentry to several of his sons. They must have had a good business in Galt but I haven't found any evidence. Eli died in 1858 and after that the family sort of split up. Daniel and George moved to Ingersoll and Samuel moved to Guelph but all the rest except William lived in Waterloo. William lived with his mother in Galt until he died in 1868. I guess that is when the family didn't know what to do with Jane. Maybe she had health issues or maybe she couldn't afford to live in Galt.

Anyway two years later she ended up in the House of Refuge. This is where my story breaks down. With so many children living in Waterloo, I would think that someone would have looked after her or at least given her a proper burial next to Eli in Galt.
