District's Outstanding Cattleman, Jairus W. Maus Passes - A man who became almost a legend in his lifetime, as the head of the largest beef cattle operation in the East, Jairus W. Maus, RR 3, Ayr, died on Sunday in his 77th year. The late Mr. Maus was a passenger in a car driven by his grandson, James Maus, when he suffered a heart attack. For many years the name Maus has been synonymous with beef cattle production, and Fairview Farms Ltd., the Maus holdings, were among the largest suppliers of beef not only to Toronto markets but to Buffalo and other American markets, on occasion. He was born in South Dumfries, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John William Maus, and this locality became the subsequent headquarters for his cattle and farming operation. Besides having a keen business mind, Mr. Maus had a natural instinct in the selection and raising of cattle which many other cattlemen maintained was "more than could be learned." They often noted with admiration, almost bordering on awe, his ability to estimate the weight of a pen of cattle within a few pounds, or select Western stocker calves that grew into top grade cattle in the East. It was said that through his selections in the West there were more good beef cattle raised by district farmers in his generation than had seemed possible in previous years. In fact, in recent years the Fairview Farms brought East 400 or more carloads annually, according to the Canadian Cattlemen publication. In 1940 he had four farms in this area, and began his expansion program as his sons became old enough to assist. The holdings have continued to increase over the years, with some 2,300 acres in the Ayr district and a somewhat larger acreage in the Kincardine area bearing the familiar Fairview name. Of late Fairview was included sheep in its livestock program. The late Mr. Maus was an active and valued member of Knox United Church, serving as a member of the session and a former trustee. He was a strong supporter of various church projects over the years. His wife, the former Elizabeth Ann Baxter, died in 1957. An infant daughter, Frances Ann, died in 1930. Surviving are four sons, Dr. John H., Windsor; Richard Douglas, RR 3, Ayr; Donald S., Kincardine, and Hugh C., RR 3, Ayr; four daughters, Elizabeth M., Hamilton; Mrs. Ian (Agnes) Thomson, Colorado Springs, Col.; Mrs. Duncan (Jean) McGugan, Strathroy, and Mrs. A. W. (Margaret) Bond, Smithville; and three sisters, Janet, Laurie and Mrs. N.H. (Estelle) Bennett, all of Ayr. There are 27 grandchildren. Funeral service was held today (Wednesday) from Knox United Church conducted by Rev. D. E. Willis. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.

Death of Richard Baxter - The death on Saturday evening at the residence of his mother-in-law, Blenheim, of Mr. Richard Baxter came as a shock to the community. On the 22nd of August last Mr. Baxter had the misfortune to sustain two fractures of his left leg. Under good surgical treatment the limb progressed favorably and the chances for a speedy recovery looked good, but Mr. Baxter was very restless under confinement and liver trouble developed, whether as the result of predisposition or of internal injuries received, in the accident is not definitely known. The deceased was in his 50th year and was born in Blenheim. In 1885 he married Miss Elizabeth Lillico, who, with a family of eight - three sons and five daughters - survives him. Of a quiet, unobtrusive disposition, he made many friends, all of whom will deeply regret his untimely end. In religion he was a Presbyterian and an elder in Knox church, while his political creed was strongly Liberal. Mr. Baxter was recognized as a good farmer and one who was making splendid headway. At the time of the accident he was busily engaged in the erection of a fine new house. The funeral took place from his late residence on Tuesday afternoon to Ayr cemetery and was very largely attended.

News of the death of this well known resident of Blenheim will be a surprise to many of our readers. Mr. Hall was in Ayr about three weeks ago and to a casual observer would appear to have been in his usual health. It appears, however, that he had been ailing for a year past, being afflicted with kidney and urinary troubles, and of late gradually sank until on Tuesday morning! about 2 o'clock he breathed his last. Thomas Hall was the eldest son of the late Andrew Hall of Blenheim. He was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland, and came with his parents to Canada in 1834, when about eight years of age. The family settled upon the homestead now occupied by Mr. Wm. Hall and it may be said that the deceased remained almost within sight of the old home farm until his death. Some 36 or 37 years ago Mr. Hall was married to Agnes Robson, daughter of the late John Robson of Ayr, a most estimable lady, who survives him. By her he had nine children, only one of whom died before him, a daughter who passed away at a tender age. Those remaining are, Andrew and John, both prosperous farmers on concession 12, Blenheim; Agnes, wife of Mr. John Maus, S. Dumfries, and Isabella, Thomas, Jennie, Alexander and Oliver, who reside at the family home, lot 15, con. 13, Blenheim, Mr. Hall was in his younger days a most energetic worker. His business was always carefully conducted, with the result that early in life he had acquired a competency. Wealth accumulated with him and for years he had been considered one of the most opulent residents of the wealthy township of Blenheim. His friend, Isaac Master, M. P. P., who was in town on Tuesday, in speaking of him said he looked upon Mr. Hall as having been one of the most thorough business men in the community. He was not slow to extend a helping hand to those in need and, we believe, not a few have been tided over a serious business crisis by funds advanced by Thomas Hall. Undoubtedly he will leave a place in the community which will be hard to fill. But in the home from which he has gone only those who have there been intimately associated by the most tender ties can tell what a void his death has left. And the bereavement will be the more keenly felt from the fact that death has been long unknown in the home, and comparatively little known in the more immediate circle of relatives. Mr. Hall was a brother of Messrs. Stephen, Andrew and Wm. Hall and Mrs. Anthony Marshall of Blenheim, and Mrs. Sheriff Perry of Woodstock, and one of his brothers informs us that his is the first death in the family for 37 years. The deceased had attained the age of nearly 63 years, The widow and family have the warm condolence of many friends in their sad loss. This (Thursday) afternoon the last sad rites will be observed, the funeral taking place to the new cemetery, Ayr.
