    Pte. Wm. Appleyard Makes the Supreme Sacrifice - Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Appleyard, Wrigley's Corners, have been notified that their eldest son, Pte. William Appleyard, has been seriously wounded. He and another brother, Joseph, enlisted with the 111th batt. This news was received on Friday. On Sunday the parents were informed that their son had died from his wounds while still in the clearing station. He was wounded by a gas shell on Sept. 22nd and died on the 24th. This makes the third young man from Wrigley's Corners district who has made the supreme sacrifice, the other two being Ptes. Cecil Birley and Robert A. Riddell.

    Sudden Death
    Joseph Appleyard Passes n Galt Following Heart Attack

    The community was shocked on Monday evening t hear of the sudden passing at the home of his sister in Galt of Joseph Appleyard, prominent and highly esteemed resident of this village. Mr. Appleyard suffered a heart attack last Tuesday, and on Friday was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. W. G. Fallen, 33 Brant Road North, Galt. Again stricken in his room Monday evening, the attack proved fatal. Mr. Appleyard, who was in his 71st year, was born in Lincolnshire, England, and at the age of six years he came to Canada with his parents and settled at Port Colborne, Ont. The family lived there for two years and Mr. Appleyard attended Port Colborne school. They then moved to the Muskoka district. In 1885, Mr. Appleyard moved to Galt, and had lived in this vicinity ever since. For some years he was a driver for George Hancock and Georg Taylor in Galt, and later operated farms at Wrigley's Corners and Roseville. He came to Ayr to live 10 years ago. Since coming to Ayr, he had taken a prominent part in the life of the community and for several years was a member of the council. He was a member of Knox United Church. Mr. Appleyard had a wide circle of friends who will mourn his passing. His wife predeceased him about a year ago. Three sons have also died. William was killed in action in the Great War; Clarence died after the war as the result of war injuries, and George was killed in a blast accident in Mexico four years ago. Surviving are four brothers and three sisters, viz.: George, Galt; Arthur, Hamilton; James, London; Walter, Aldershot; Mrs. A. Thomson, Ayr; Mrs. W. T. Murray, Rockland, and Mrs. W. G. Fallen, Galt. The funeral was held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2: 30 with service at his late home here and interment in the Ayr Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral offerings, including a tribute from the Ayr Municipal Council.

    Death of Mrs. J. Appleyard

    Her Passing Followed an Illness of Almost a Year
    Funeral Monday

    Jessie Mitchell Davidson, beloved wife of Joseph Appleyard, died at 9.30 Friday morning at her Jedburgh home following an illness of almost a year. She was in her 76th year. Of a kindly disposition, Mrs. Appleyard had many friends who will learn of her passing with deep regret. She was an adherent of Knox United Church and a member of the Women's Institute. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Davidson, she was born at Roseville, and as a girl attended the old Ayr school, located near the rink. In 1893, she married Joseph Appleyard in Toronto, and since then had lived in Galt and Ayr. She came to Ayr with her husband 14 years ago after residing on a farm east of Ayr, now occupied by Wesley Main, for eight or nine years. Besides her husband, Mrs. Appleyard is survived by one sister, Mrs. Agnes Congdon, Jacksonville, Florida. Three sons predeceased her. William was killed in the Great War, Clarence died as a result of war injuries, and George died in Texas in 1931. The funeral, which was private, took place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with service at her home and interment in Ayr Cemetery. Rev. J. W. Currie officiated. The pallbearers were: George Edgar and Lyon Findlater, Ayr; Arthur Appleyard and Walter Appleyard, Hamilton; James Appleyard, London; and Edwin S. Hood, Galt.

    MR. JAMES APPLEYARD

    The sudden death of Mr. Jas. Appleyard on Wednesday morning, removes from our midst a respected resident. Mr. Appleyard. was born in Leicestershire, England, in 1835 and came to Canada about 18 years ago, living for a time at Port Colborne and Muskoka, coming to Galt about May, 1885. The deceased was as well as usual up to Monday evening, when he was suddenly stricken down with apoplexy and died as stated above. He was a miller by trade and leaves a wife and eight children: five boys and three girls.
