    Mrs. Thomas Laurie

Blenheim Pioneer Passes To Great Beyond

One of the pioneers of this district passed to her rest on Monday afternoon in the person of Mrs. Thomas Laurie, 10th Blenheim, in her 80th year. Deceased had been ill for three weeks with a bad cold, which subsequently developed into pneumonia, and she passed peacefully away on Monday after being ill with the latter trouble for only a few days. She was born in Ireland and came to Canada with her brother when 18 years of age, settling near Shower's Corners. The trip across the ocean in those early days was considered quite an adventure, and in the case of Mrs. Laurie, whose maiden name was Eliza Given, it was a decidedly rough passage. A violent storm brook forth disabling the vessel, and for the sake of safety the passengers were forced below decks and the hatches battened down. The boat finally managed to weather the heavy seas and make port, much to the relief of the passengers. Deceased was married to the late Thomas Laurie 46 years ago and settled on the present homestead. Here the family was raised and the parents passed through the usual stages of pioneer life which was associated with early days in Ontario. Her husband predeceased her 22 years ago, since which time the management of the farm has been in the hands of her son, Andrew G. Laurie. Mrs. Laurie was a kind and loving mother and was much esteemed by a wide circle of friends who will greatly mourn her demise. She was a faithful member of Stanley Street Church and afterward of Knox United, and when her health permitted was …?... one son, as follows: Mrs. John William Lillico, Blenheim; and Miss Agnes and Andrew G., on the homestead. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, viz.: Joseph given, East Oxford, Samuel of California; Mrs. Hamilton, Vancouver; and Mrs. Mason, Norwich. The funeral will take place to the Ayr Cemetery this (Thursday) afternoon.
