While walking from his residence down to his mailbox for the mail on Monday about 12.30 noon, George Alexander Guthrie of Greenfield suddenly collapsed and expired. He had not been in the best of health for some time but appeared to be on the road to recovery. Born on the Guthrie homestead, Greenfield road, a son of David Guthrie and Elizabeth Morton, Scottish pioneers, he had lived all his life in this district. Mr. Guthrie was in his 79th year, and was the last member of the Guthrie family of eight sons and two daughters. In his early years, he occupied the farm now owned by John J. Hodgson, at the C.P.R. depot. He then removed to the farm, 1-1/2 miles west of New Dundee on the Blenheim road, now occupied by his son, William; and 19 years ago came to Greenfield where he took over the old Goldie farm. Mr. Guthrie was known far and wide for his many fine qualities. His was a cheerful disposition and his company was always desirable. He was a lifelong member of Knox United church. Mr. Guthrie was married twice. His first wife, whose maiden name was Barbara Hall, predeceased him 35 years ago. By this union there were three children: William Guthrie, Blenheim; Mrs. Ernest Coleman, Galt, and Miss Barbara, Toronto. He subsequently married Estella Alberta Toman, who survives him, along with two sons, Hugh of Blenheim and James, at home. There are also nine grandchildren. The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon at, 2.30 o'clock from his late residence to the Ayr Cemetery.

The deceased, who was in her 82nd year, was born near Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland, came to Canada with her parents in 1842, at the age of 17 years, settling in Ayr, and three years later was married to Mr. Guthrie, who, predeceased her by some years. They settled on the farm now occupied by her, son Thomas in North Dumfries, which, with the exception of an occasional visit among different members of her family continued to be her home, and from there her remains were conveyed to their last resting place in the Ayr cemetery. A large family survives, the members of which are - David in Superior, Neb., Robert in Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Wm. Marshall, Ayr, John D , Ayr, Mrs. C. H. Gerbig, Ayr, William in Ingersoll, Ont., James in Superior, Neb., George at New Dundee and Thomas on the homestead North Dumfries. The funeral on April 16 was attended by a large number of friends, the services being conducted by the deceased's pastor, Rev. John Thomson. Thus one by one, the old settlers are passing so that bourne from whence no traveler ere returns.
