    Death of Mrs. Marshall

Seventeen Years in Business in Ayr

The passing on Dec 5 of Mrs. Jessie Guthrie Marshall marks another epoch in the history of our community. Born in North Dumfries 67 years ago, she spent all her life in and around Ayr, with the exception of two years on a farm near Brantford. It is scarcely necessary to say that during this long period Mrs. Marshall witnessed a great transformation in the country. From a condition little better than a wilderness, she saw the country develop and become one of the finest agricultural, industrial and commercial centres in Canada. Seventeen years ago the deceased went into business here in partnership with her sister, Mrs. Gerbig. Two years later she branched out for herself and continued in business up to the time of her death. She had been in poor health for some time, so that final dissolution was not unexpected. An only child, Mr. J. David Marshall, survives. A sister and five brothers are also living. They are Mrs. Chas. H. Gerbig, Ayr; and Messrs. David Guthrie, Superior, Neb., John D. Guthrie, Ayr, Wm. Guthrie, Ingersoll, Gen. H. Guthrie, New Dundee, and Thos. Guthrie, North Dumfries. The funeral took place on Sunday, service being held in Knox United Church, of which denomination deceased was a member, and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. J. Brown. The pallbearers were Messrs. Wm. Manson, Morton Guthrie, R. Morton, Andrew Hall, John Gemmel and Geo. D. Black.

    Notes:

In the death of Catherine Morton, wife of the late David Guthrie, which event occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Marshall, Ayr, on the afternoon of April 14, the community loses another pioneer who was widely known and highly esteemed throughout the section. The deceased, who was in her 82nd year, was born near Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland, came to Canada with her parents in 1842, at the age of 17 years, settling in Ayr, and three years later was married to Mr. Guthrie, who, predeceased her by some years. They settled on the farm now occupied by her, son Thomas in North Dumfries, which, with the exception of an occasional visit among different members of her family continued to be her home, and from there her remains were conveyed to their last resting place in the Ayr cemetery. A large family survives, the members of which are - David in Superior, Neb., Robert in Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Wm. Marshall, Ayr, John D , Ayr, Mrs. C. H. Gerbig, Ayr, William in Ingersoll, Ont., James in Superior, Neb., George at New Dundee and Thomas on the homestead North Dumfries. The funeral on April 16 was attended by a large number of friends, the services being conducted by the deceased's pastor, Rev. John Thomson. Thus one by one, the old settlers are passing so that bourne from whence no traveler ere returns.
