    Death of Thomas Easton

Thomas Easton, the subject of this brief sketch, passed away early Saturday morning, after an illness which confined him to his home for same months past. He was in his 80th year and had been a resident of the neighboring township of South Dumfries for the greater part of his life. Born in Scotland, where he received part of his education, he came to Canada about the year 1840, just after the Mackenzie rebellion, and settled in the township of South Dumfries, where he finished his schooling and grew to manhood, and where he spent a long and useful life, moving to Ayr some two years ago. Of the changes witnessed by Mr. Easton during this long period it is not necessary to write at length. Suffice it to say that from a sparcely settled primeval forest to a prosperous agricultural community was a long stride, necessitating great patience and much arduous labor. In this wonderful transition the deceased was an active unit and a personal force in every battle for the betterment of the community and the country at large. A man of good sound judgment and strong convictions, he was not easily swayed from the even tenor of a well-defined course, wielding a ready pen in his advocacy of temperance and moral reform, or the denounciation of vice in any form. In politics he was a Reformer, and in religion a Presbyterian, being a consistent, member of Knox church. Early in life he was united in marriage with Mary Richmond, who survives, together with a grown up family, the members of which are-Alexander in Brantford; William on the 10th con. of Blenheim; George near Washington; Arthur in South Dumfries; Annie (Mrs. J. S. Clark) in Ayr; Thomas in North Dumfries, and John on the homestead, South Dumfries. The funeral on Monday to Ayr cemetery was very largely attended, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. John Thomson, assisted by Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pallbearers were the deceased's six sons.

    Death of Mrs. Thos. Easton
Resided in Ayr and Vicinity for Upwards of Four Score Years

In the death of Mrs. Thomas Easton, which event occurred at her residence, Manley Street, Ayr, on Thursday, March 18th, 1920, at 5 p.m., this community loses one of its most highly esteemed pioneers, in her 82nd year. Mary Richmond (her maiden name) was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, and came to Canada with her parents at the age of one month, settling on the farm now occupied by Mr. Albert Gillespie. In 1863, she was married to Thomas Easton and took up residence on the Easton homestead, a short distance from her old home. Here she resided continuously until 12 years ago, when she and her husband retired from the more strenuous activities of life and moved to Ayr, Mr. Easton surviving his retirement only about two years. Mrs. Easton was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and a regular attendant at the services, taking a deep and intelligent interest in everything relating to the interests of the congregation and the community at large. A devoted wife and mother, her memory will ever be a green spot in the recollection of her family, and a wide circle of friends will join with them in mourning the departure of one who was sincerely loved and esteemed for her many excellent qualities of head and heart. All the members of the family, one daughter and six sons survive. They are: Alexander, New Durham; William, Bright; George, Washington; Thomas, Ayr; John and Arthur on old homestead, and Mrs. John Clark at home. Several brothers also survive. They are: James, Richmond, Galt; Rev. John M. Richmond, Ormand, Florida and Mr. Matthew Richmond, Iowa. The funeral on Saturday to Ayr cemetery was largely attended, the pallbearers being deceased's six sons. Rev. J. J. Brown conducted the services which was assisted by Rev. Dr. John Thomson, who was Mrs. Easton's pastor for a period of nearly 40 years.

    Passing of Annie Easton

Of the various kinds of people who are being laid to rest in our village cemetery, the most interesting now are the old pioneers, and Miss Annie Easton, who was buried here on Monday afternoon, is a prominent one in this class, a factor in her case being her age, which was 93 years, having been born in 1838. She was born near Copse Holm in Roxburghshire, Scotland, and came with her father and mother ? about 1840. The family settled on the farm, now owned by and being next east of Mr. Albert Gillespie's about 2 miles southeast of Ayr, this place, ever since, . being known as the "Easton Homestead". When the family settled on their Canadian home, it comprised the father, Alexander Easton, the mother whose maiden name was Jane Kyle, their sons, William, Andrew, Thomas, George and Robert, and their daughters, Jane and Annie. William went to Australia during the late fifties, George died early in life, and Jane became Mrs. W. Gladstone and went to Missouri about the year 1870. Miss Annie continued to dwell at home and cared for her aged parents until they died, then for a time made her home with her brother Andrew on the 10th Concession of Blenheim. When her sister-in-law died, she returned to the old home and took care of the family, and continued to dwell with her brother Robert till he died, since then she has made her home with her two nieces, Mrs. W. Nichol and Mrs. J. P. McCammon, of Paris. During her long stay near Ayr she was a member of Stanley St. Church, and after going to Paris, belonged to the Presbyterian Church there, and in her daily life lived and acted the kind of Christian that she professed to be. Her father had been a shepherd in Scotland, and like most men of his class; was a God-fearing man and his home was ruled by gentleness, kindness and sympathy for others. These are the influences that made Miss Easton, so valuable to her young relatives and friends by her serenity, gentleness and kindness of disposition. The funeral on Monday was largely attended, the services being in charge of Rev. Dr. McKenzie of Paris. The pall bearers were Messrs. Walter Nichol; J. McCammon, and Andrew, George, William and Arthur Easton.
