    Russell S. Abernethy

Funeral service for the late Russell S. Abernethy, who passed away at his home in Ayr on Wednesday, May 28, was held from the T. Little and Son Funeral Home, Galt, on Saturday. The last rites were conducted by Rev. W. D. Goodger, assisted by Rev. J. W. Currie. During the service, Miss Bessie Renwick of Galt presided at the organ for a number of Mr. Abernethy's favorite selections, and Marlen Vincent sang, "I Shall Not Pass Again This Way."

A large number of relatives and friends were present to pay last respects to a man who was outstanding in the textile selling field. Relatives attended from Toronto, Hamilton, Peterborough, Campbellford and Oshawa.

The pallbearers were four nephews, Walter Bibby, E. L. Wellman, Douglas Trull, Gerald Lebrash, and two close friends, H. C. Springstead and Lemuel LeDrew, Ayr. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.

    Associated With Textile Trade

The late Mr. Abernethy was born Campbellford, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Abernethy. Early in life he became interested in the textile trade, and was for a time in partnership with H. C. Springstead in the firm of Springstead Knitwear on Water street north, Galt, some 20 years ago. He later moved back to Campbellford, where he established the firm of Aber-Knit, which was well known throughout the province for its excellent product.

    Resided Here for 12 Years

He removed with his wife and family to Ayr from Guelph about 12 years ago, and at the same time became associated with Bonnie Heather Knitwear, Hamilton, owned by William Little. During his employment with this company he travelled extensively through Northern Ontario, where he made many warm friends. He was possessed of a fine tenor voice, and was in constant demand as a soloist in the northern churches. He suffered a stroke two and a half years ago, and since that time had been confined to his home here. On Wednesday last he suffered another stroke while mowing the lawn and died shortly after. The late Mr. Abernethy was a member of Knox United Church, where he sang in the choir. Although associated with no fraternal organizations, he was an active member of the Commercial Travellers' Association of Canada. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen M. Trull of Toronto; two daughters, Shirley and Gloria, at home, and a son, Russell, also at home. Two sisters, Mrs. A. S. Wreeks of Newburgh, N.Y., and Mrs. R J. Bibby of Campbellford, also survive.
