One of the oldest and most esteemed residents of our village passed away at 11 o'clock Tuesday evening in the person of Stephen Marshall, in his 83rd year. Mr. Marshall had been in failing health for several months, but took to his bed only two weeks ago. He was born on the Marshall homestead, 13th concession of Blenheim, now owned by his son, William, being the son of Anthony Marshall and Isabel Hall, who were pioneer settlers from Scotland. After his marriage he farmed in South Dumfries for several years and then removed to the Kingsborough farm, Townline, where he spent ten years. The family then went back to the home farm, 13th of Blenheim, where the next twenty years were spent. They came to Ayr 21 years ago and took up residence on Grey street. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1933. Mr. Marshall was a member of the former Stanley Street Church and after union, was a valued member of Knox United congregation, where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was one of the oldest members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., and a member of the Ayr Cemetery Company Board. In politics, he was a staunch Liberal. While engaged in farming, he was for many years a director of Drumbo Fair Agricultural Society and also served on the Perry's Corners school board. Mr. Marshall was widely known throughout this section and was much respected as a good friend and neighbor. Besides his sorrowing wife, whose maiden name was Jennie Scott, he is survived by the following children: J. A. Marshall, Calgary Wm. S. Marshall, Blenheim; Mrs. Robert Gladstone, North Dumfries; Lovett Marshall, Yorkton, Sask., and Mrs. Harold Foote, Toronto. Notes:

Passing of John S. Reid - There passed away at an early hour on Tuesday morning John S. Reid, one of the pioneers of Dumfries. Mr. Reid was born on the Duke of Boueleugh's estate in the year 1829 and when a small boy, came to Canada with his parents and a colony of Scotch emigrants from Dumfriesshire, Scotland. They were six weeks on the ocean and arrived in Montreal about the latter end of July; continuing on their journey, they reached Galt on the 12th day of August, 1831, where land had been allotted to them in the township which got its name from the shire they came from. Mr. Reid experienced all the hardship of pioneer life and not only helped to clear the land his father had taken up, but a number of the farms lying adjacent. The debating society held their meetings at his father's house during the winter months and he distinctly remembered the members bringing armfuls of pine knots to furnish the light during the discussion, and he often attended divine service in William Currie's log barn before the "old log meeting house" was built on the grave yard which still remains to be seen on the Galt road. In 1854 Mr. Reid married Isabella Matheson, who predeceased him 26 years, leaving a family of four sons - John and Walter of Ayr, Andrew of Guelph, James of Rock Island, Ill., and six daughters - Catherine at home, Mrs. Codling (deceased), Mrs. Gladstone of Nithvale, Mrs. Ward of Woodstock; Mrs. Carter of Ayr and Violet of Guelph, who now mourn the loss of an affectionate father. Of a quiet and unassuming disposition he had a large circle of friends, who heard of his death with sincere regret. In his latter years he often remarked that he had lived long enough to note that each successive generation of the small colony of Scotch emigrants that came to Dumfries with him had, despite increasing prosperity and abounding freedom deemed it a point of national honor to maintain inviolate the cherished traditions of their fathers by accepting a quotation from the Bible as a final argument on every question. He was 83 years and five months of age.

    Passing of a Great Grandmother

On Thursday last there passed to her reward one of the pioneer settlers of this district in the person of Mrs. Alex. Scott of Blenheim, who had attained the ripe age of 90 years. The deceased, whose maiden name was Elspeth Oliver, was born in Scotland and came to Canada at the age of 11, settling with her parents on the Old Oliver farm just east of the village. Ayr was then a mere hamlet and the whole countryside was a little better than a howling wilderness. The changes she witnessed during 80 years residence in a young and constantly developing country can possibly be better imagined than described. Suffice it that she was not only an eyewitness but a participant in the development of the country and had the honor of living to be a great-grandmother. In early womanhood she was united in marriage with the late Alex Scott, who predeceased her 11 years, at the age of 90. To them four sons and three daughters were born, all of whom survive, viz., Mrs. Geo. Henderson, San Francisco, Cali.; George and James, South Dumfries; William and Mrs. Stephen Marshall, Blenheim; Mrs. E. Elkington, Paris, and Thomas O., Ayr. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Peter Hope, Ayr, and Mrs. Geo. Hope, Brantford. Two brothers and a sister predeceased her - Thomas of Manitoba, William of Ayr and Mrs. Geo. Ausbrook of Paris Plains. The funeral took place on Sunday, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery. Deceased was a member of Stanley-st. church, Ayr, and the services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Anderson, assisted by Rev. .Mr. Grant and Dr. Thomson. The pallbearers were grandchildren - viz., E. R. Scott, Galt; Wm. Marshall, Blenheim; Bert Scott and Scotty Elkington, Paris; Leslie Kelly, Paris Plains, and John McGill, Burford.
