    Mrs. William J. Smith

    PRESTON, Mrs. William J. Smith of 607 Vine St., died Sunday at Victoria Hospital, London, Ont. She was 81. Mrs. Smith was the former Myrtle Roesgen and was born in Preston. She had resided here all her life and was a member of St. Paul's United Church, a life member of the United Church Women and also a member of the Golden Rule Sunday school class. She was predeceased by her husband in 1960. Surviving are four sons, Harold and Donald, both of Galt; Kenneth of Preston and Gordon of Venice, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Grace) Lund of Galt and Mrs. Norman (Mary) McKenzie of Grimsby, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The body is at Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, where funeral and committal services will be conducted Tuesday, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Preston cemetery.

    WILLIAM H. ROESGEN

    PRESTON, Oct. 2\emdash Following a lengthy illness, William H. Roesgen, 84, died here early today. He had been seriously ill for the last three months and in poor health for a number of years. A former acting chief of the Preston Fire Department, Mr. Roesgen was well known in this district. He had been an active member of the fire department from 1896 to 1925 and had taken over the duties of chief in 1914 when Chief W. A. Spalding was overseas. An honorary member of the departmomt since his retirement, he took continued interest in its activities until his death. Mr. Roesgen also had a keen interest in many phases of municipal life. He was a carpenter by trade but had been living retires during many years. He was a member of St. Pau1's United Church. Mr. Roesgen's wife predeasced him in 1921. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. William Smith, Preston; three brothers, Edgar, Rochester, N.Y., Arthur, Saskatchewan, Edward, Toronto; and six sisters, Mrs. Mary Burnett, Hespeler, Mrs. Minnie Spellen and Miss Rose Roesgen, both of Toronto; and Mrs. Kate Sturdy, Mrs. Ida Bowman and Miss Nettie, all of Preston. One son, a daughter and two sisters, predeceased him. Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great-grandchildren. The remains will rest at his late residence, 1223 Queen St., until 10 a.m. Thursday when they will be moved to the Stager-Pass Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 3.30 Thursday afternoon. Interment will be made in the Preston Cemetery.
