    Business:
IMPROVEMENT IN HESPELER.-We lately had the pleasure of inspecting a New Hall, built in this flourishing village by Mrs Glick, as an addition to her tavern. The building is two storeys in height, built of stone; and the Hall itself is 80 feet long by 40 in width. The Hall will be opened on New Year's night next by a Ball, at which all the world and his wife will doubtless be present. Mrs Glick is known to get up the best Balls in the neighbourhood; and she intends to surpass even herself on New Year's night next.

    Notes:

Mr. Christian Schwendimann died last Thursday , May 2, 1889, in Waterloo Township, near Fischer's Mill, of progressive paralysis, at the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 13 days. Very many friends and acquaintances from near and far attended the funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, thereby making known their respect for the deceased, and their sympathy with the suffering of the family. Pastor Wurster of Preston, the former pastor and a friend of the family, conducted the service in German and English.

The deceased was a native of Canton Bern, Switzerland, and had been married for almost 49 years to Anna Künzig, with whom he lived happily and peacefully, and founded an orderly household. Of this marriage, 9 children (3 sons and 6 daughters) , of whom 2 died in the old fatherland, were born. In the year 1857, he emigrated to America with his family, and settled in this district, to found a new homestead. Through the appropriate application of his extensive talents and general aptitudes, through his energetic determination and his orderly family life, he succeeded with the cooperation of his industrious wife and his well-brought-up children, in transforming a wretched land-hold-ing into a 1st-class farm. As long as he lived there, he was a member of the Schantz congregation, which Pastor Wurster served for many years.

After several of the children had grown and acquired their own households, he and his life's companion began to long to retire to a peaceful life, after all their restless activity. He consequently sold the farm and settled near Fischer's Mill, to spend the evening of his life in seclusion from all public activity and to devote himself to lighter activities, and especially to reading.

God's benevolence granted him a healthy, robust body, good spiritual gifts, success in his undertakings and a long, happy life. Six weeks ago, he suffered an attack of apoplexy, and since then has suffered from paralysis of his limbs, until finally, the angel of death sent for him. He leaves behind his aged, almost blind wife, 1 son, 5 daughters, 11 grandchildren, and 2 sisters in Switzerland. The oldest son died several years ago near Elmira, and 1 daughter is still at home, to devote herself to the care of her mother. J.W.
