Poet soldier foresaw his death at battle that was 'worse than Vimy'

.....The first day of fighting at Hill 70 was the last day for William Parker , 21, a bookkeeper and championship hockey player from Preston.

Parker crouched in a dark trench before 4 a.m. with his comrades. Silently, they waited for a whistle to tell them to go over the top, to attack the enemy near German-occupied Lens, in northeastern France.

Hill 70 was a treeless expanse that dominates Lens, commanding the view of the plain beyond. It was a tactical advantage to hold it near the busiest coal mining area of France.

Whistles broke the silence at 4: 25 a.m. as dawn was breaking. Parker and his comrades climbed out of the trenches, heading across no man's land while Canadian bombs fell just 70 metres ahead of them. The barrage kept the enemy pinned underground for as long as possible. Canada also fired drums of burning oil to create a smokescreen to shield advancing troops.

Parker laid communication wires while the battle raged around him. He stayed in place through two German counterattacks and returned to headquarters for more materials. At 4 p.m., while he was conversing with officers, a burst of shrapnel hit him in the stomach and neck.....

GEORGE B. PARKER DIES IN 92ND YEAR

Has Lived In Preston Since 1881; Superintendent Of Methodist Sunday School

George B. Parker passed away at his home here last night in his 92nd year. His death was not unexpected. In the passing of Mr. Parker, Preston loses one of its oldest and most revered citizens. Born in Weston in 1839, Mr. Parker was one who saw the growth of Preston, Waterloo county and the province practically from the time of the MacKenzie rebellion. He was married in 1863, to Elizabeth Jane Hurst at Brampton. He moved to Elora in 1864 where their eight children were born. In 1881 the family moved to Preston and resided on Queen street. He was predeceased by his wife in 1901 and then made his home with his daughter, Miss Isobel Parker, until recently when he went to live with his son, Mr. Thomas J. Parker on Duke street. The death severs a link with Ontario's past. The late Mr. Parker's family settled in York county in 1830 and have always been prominent and untiring workers on behalf of the Liberal party. The last of his family, his brothers, lived to even a greater age and were highly respected in York county by all with whom they came in contact. A staunch Methodist all his life, Mr. Parker was for many years superintendent of the local Sunday school. He displayed intense interest in all matters pertaining to the church. For many years he was with the P. E. Shantz foundry and later transferred his connections to the E. B. Salyerds Company. He retired about 20 years ago. Of his eight children, two survive. They are Mr.Thomas J. Parker and Miss Isobel Parker. There are also seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, The grandchildren are Mrs. D. W. Panabaker, Hespeler; Mrs. R. H. Renwick, Preston; Mr. Elmer Parker, London: Mr. Walter Parker, Preston and Messrs, Roy Lawrence and Elton Parker, Port Huron, Mich. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from the home of his son, Mr. Thomas J. Parker, 553 Duke street, to Preston cemetery, where interment will take place, Rev. R. M. Geiger of St. Paul's church will officiate.
