    Notes:

Victoria Wheel Co., Main Street - Well may Galt be called the Manchester of Canada, for, considering the population, there are more and varied industries carried on here than any other town or city of its size in the Dominion. The business is more steady, and the mechanics as a rule own their own houses, which gives them a greater interest in the welfare of the town. Among the most prominent manufacturing industries in the town is that of the Victoria Wheel Company, which is located at the head of Main Street. This business has been established over 25 years, being commenced in a comparatively small way, and steadily expanded during the passing years. In 1866 the present Company succeeded Smith & McMillan, and since that time the business has made rapid strides forward. The premises cover about three-quarters of an acre of ground, the main building being a three-story stone structure fitted up with all the most improved and perfected machinery for this class of work. Employment is furnished for fifty skilled workmen on an average throughout the year. The Company manufactures all kinds of carriage and buggy wheels, shafts, plough handles, and articles of similar nature, which find a market throughout Ontario and the other Provinces. The work done by this Company is noted for the superior quality of the material used and the finish and excellence of workmanship displayed. The machinery is run by a 100 horse power engine, having a 140-horse power boiler. Mr. John Perry is the manager, and is a gentleman well qualified for the position. He is a native of Canada, of Scottish descent, and is a thoroughgoing and enterprising business man. Robert Scott, the chief member of the firm, is a native of Galt, and has been connected with it for fourteen years. He is also the present Mayor of Galt.

    ___________________

Mr. Cook was killed by a separator falling upon him on the 19th September, 1859. No accident ever happened in Galt which caused more profound sorrow. Two days afterwards, in the Dumfries Reformer, the writer of this sketch made the following among other references to Mr. Cook, from whom he received much friendly counsel in early life : " Mr Cook was born in the year 1814, on the Island of Arran, off the west coast of Scotland, and was consequently in his 46th year. At an early age, he emigrated from there to the Province of New Brunswick, where he resided for a number of years. From New Brunswick the deceased came to Galt, and entered into the mercantile business. Disliking the drudgery of mercantile life, he ultimately became a partner in the Galt foundry. . . . Mr. Cook possessed natural abilities of a high order, which had been cultivated by a good education, and extensive acquaintance with literature. His unbending integrity and uprightness made him universally respected, and the evidences of his zeal in the moral and intellectual elevation of the youth of Galt will hng remain a fitting memento and a glowing tribute to his memory.

    ______________________________

COOK - We deeply regret to learn that yesterday afternoon our old and much respected friend, Mr. Peter Cook, of the firm of Lutz, Cook, and Co., Founders, Galt, was killed by a thrashing machine falling upon him. He only lived about three-quarters of an hour after the accident. Galt will mourn the loss of one of its most enterprising, useful, upright, and kind-hearted citizens. In private life, Mr. Cook was a most affectionate man, a genuine friend. In the public positions he, from time to time occupied, he proved himself the earnest advocate of every useful and moral work, and to those many rare virtues, he added the faith and works of a zealous Christian.

    Notes:

Death of a Most Respected Lady

On Monday last, after some weeks of weakness and suffering, Mrs. Cook, widow of the late Peter Cook, passed to her rest. The deceased lady was so well known in the Christian record of her life amongst us, her active participation in all good work; her kindly dealing with the poor, that it is only necessary to say she is gone, to point the void created.

There are not many now living in our town who can remember the thrill of horror which went through the community that summer's afternoon now many years ago, when the messenger hurriedly sent for a doctor, gasped out that "Peter Cook was killed up at the foundry." The circumstances are vivid yet to many. The hope that the report was not true; the hurrying to the scene, and the gradual realization that the fatal blow had fallen, and that never more, by man or woman, young or old, would his kindly words be heard - all this will never be forgotten by those who knew Mr. Cook, and respected him as one of our foremost citizens. But if our people mourned for a lost friend the blow to the wife and household can be understood. Christian fortitude enabled them to withstand it and the duties of life were filled to their utmost; but to the wife the joy of this life was ended. She has passed to her well-earned rest and carries with her the loving remembrance of those with whom so many years of her life were spent.
