Death of Henry Becker - A Well-Known and Highly Esteemed Farmer Dies After Three Months Illness

The many friends of Messrs. W. H. and E. W. Becker, stationery and shoe merchants, respectively of this town, will regret to learn of the death of their father, Mr. Henry Becker, near Mannheim, which took place on Sunday morning after a three months' illness. Henry Becker was born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany, Sept. 25, 1835. His parents and their three sons emigrated to America about ten years later and settled in Wilmot Township on a farm almost adjoining the deceased's home in Waterloo Township. For several years he worked at the trade of carpentering. In 1862 he married Lena Stoltz and soon after settled on the farm which he occupied until his death. By thrift industry and exercise of sound judgment he became a successful farmer and business man, and later on bought the Jantz and Wingham farms adjoining the homestead. He had few, if any, enemies and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was progressive and desirous that his children should have educational and religious advantages. For many years he has been a ?hren Church at Mannheim. Until about three years ago he enjoyed perfect health, and in November last the disease gained such ahold on him that he was confined to his room. About Christmas his recovery seemed certain, but owing to serious complications his disease, chronic gastritis, took such a virtuous? Form that a few weeks ago all hopes of his recovery had to be abandoned, and he passed peacefully away on Sunday morning at one o'clock. He leaves behind him a sorrowing widow, seven sons and two daughters to mourn his loss.
