After a brief illness, Sunday, Sept. 18, 1990, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Peterborough, in his 80th year. At the time of his retirement, Vincent was the president of Huck Glove Co. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and a fourth degree member of Waterloo Knights of Columbus Council, No. 5135. He was a past member of the Sales and Ad Club and Westmount Golf and Country Club and the Kiwanis Club. Husband of the late Florence Huck (March 31, 1986). Dear father of John and his wife Debbie Huck of Kitchener, Mary Ann and her husband Len Martin of Lakefield, Ont. Loving grandfather of David and his wife Joyce Huck, Paul and Philip Huck, Jeff, Tim, Kelly Ann Martin; great-grandfather of Kyle. He is survived by four brothers, George A. of Goderich, William of Ottawa, Joseph C. of Waterloo and James R. of Kitchener and one sister, Marie Ambery of Ottawa. Huck Glove Founder Dies At 77 Years

Joseph A. Huck, 77, prominent Kitchener glove manufacturer, died at his home, 18 Heins Ave., shortly after noon today following a lengthy illness. Founder of the Huck Glove Company, Ltd., he was chairman of the Kitchener Separate School Board for several years and was widely known as a sports enthusiast. He was a member of the Separate School Board for 29 years.

STARTED IN 1906

Mr. Huck founded the glove company in the basement of his home in 1906. In 1923 he moved the firm to the then Kitchener auditorium building on Queen street south. It remained there until 1937 when he purchased the Miller Lang shirt plant on Victoria street south, present location of the firm. Well-known in local sporting circles, he was on the Kitchener senior hockey team executive when the team won the Allan Cup in 1918. He was also on the Kitchener senior baseball executive for many years and financially supported the Westmount Golf and Country Club and the Kitchener Granite Club

CHARTER MEMBER OF SCs

A member of St Mary's RC Church, he was also a member of the church council, the Holy Name Society and a charter member of Father Funcken Council of the Knights of Columbus. In addition, Mr. Huck was a member of the Commercial Travellers Association of Ontario. Born Feb. 3, 1878, in Kitchener, Mr. Huck was the last survivor of the family of the late George and Mary Huck. He was predeceased by a brother, August of Toronto and three sisters, Mrs. H. P. (Minnie) Fischer of Shakopee, Minn., Mrs. W. J. (Rose) Motz of Kitchener and Mrs. S. D. (Georgina) Swantek of Grand Rapids, Mich. Their father was at one time fire chief here.

MARRIED IN 1904

His marriage to the former Clementine Krane took place Aug. 12, 1904. Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, George A., J. Vincent, Joseph C. and James R. all of Kitchener, William of Ottawa and a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Marie) Talbot of Quebec City. The body is at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home where the rosary will he recited Wednesday at 8 p.m. Prayers will be said at the funeral home Thursday at 9 a.m. Removal will be made to St. Mary's Church for solemn requiem high mass at 10 am. Burial will be in Mount Hope RC Cemetery.

Huck Glove redevelopment merges old, modern

KITCHENER - The heritage Huck Glove building will be showcased in a three-storey modern atrium, in plans unveiled by heritage planners working on the redevelopment of the old industrial building.

Heritage consultants hired by the developer behind the project at 120 Victoria St. S. laid out their plans to conserve the 1907 former glove factory this week at a meeting of the city's heritage committee.

The $120-million project, which includes a 25-storey, 300-unit condo tower behind the office building, is being developed by Waterloo-based Momentum Developments, Kitchener's Zehr Group and KingSett Capital of Toronto.

Under those plans, the heritage building will be restored to its former glory on the outside and incorporated into a larger six-storey glass and concrete office tower. One outside wall of the old factory will anchor a dramatic modern atrium of concrete and wood that leads to the modern, six-storey office building, said Christina Karney of McCallum Sather, the heritage consultants retained by the developer.

"That atrium looks unbelievably amazing," said Steve Hamoen, a member of Heritage Kitchener.

The redevelopment would preserve the building's heritage, including the roofline, the yellow brick construction, window openings, the timber post-and-beam construction and exposed wood ceilings, she said.

It will also restore the original painted signs on the Victoria Street side and on the south facade with the original "The Huck Glove Co. Inc." painted in white lettering on a black background.

The three-storey yellow-brick former factory is currently vacant, but is in reasonably good condition, Karney said.

The restoration will demolish newer concrete additions on the rear and side of the heritage building, repair the brickwork, and replace the modern windows and doors with ones more in keeping with the originals, Karney said.

Windows on three sides will be replaced with four-over-four double-hung windows, while windows overlooking the atrium will have a more open design, to conform to the building code, she said.

Engineers have determined that the existing posts and beams can't support the weight of a six-storey office building, so some sections will be removed and reused in the building, because they help define the character of the old factory.

Similarly, many of the wood floors aren't in great shape, but the original wood from the floors will be retained for use elsewhere in the building. The exposed wooden ceilings will remain, she said.

"I am so relieved the sign will be reinstated," said Katherine Dedyna, a Kitchener native whose mother Susan sewed gloves at the factory during the Second World War.

"The sign proclaimed, as did so many, a local company with loyal workers in an unpretentious small city that manufactured world class products as a matter of course."

Mrs. Joseph Huck, 83, of 251 Queen St. South, died Sunday in St. Mary's Hospital. The former Clementine Krane, she was born in Breslau, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Krane. She was a member of St. Mary's RC Church and the Catholic Women's League. Her husband, whom she married in Kitchener in 1904, died in 1956. Surviving are five sons, George A., Joseph C. and James R., all of Kitchener, Vincent of Waterloo and William of Ottawa; one daughter, Mrs. Louis (Marie) Talbot of Quebec; and four sisters, Mrs. Frank (Irene) Shrimpton of Los Angeles, Miss Leila Krane, Mrs. William (Mae) Henze and Mrs. Ted (Betty) Madigan, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. There are 18 grandchildren. The body is at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tonight. GEORGE HUCK

After a lengthy suffering from spinal disease, Mr. George Huck of this city died on Wednesday at 11.30 p.m., at the age of 45 years. He was born in New Germany (called Maryhill today) and came to Berlin as a young man where he learned the trade of blacksmith, which he successfully pursued for a number of years. He had been chief of the fire brigade for several years, and it is largely attributable to his enthusiasm and good judgement that our fire department finds itself in such good condition. Last year, he built a lovely house near his workshop; he became ill while doing this, before it was quite completed, and did not spend one more healthy day in it. He is survived by his widow and five children, two sons and three daughters. From his youth on, of a peaceful, calm disposition, unassuming and friendly in his dealings, and honest and willing to serve in business, he could not fail to make many friends. By insurance policies with the A.O.U.W. Royal Arcanum, he provided well for his family, and during his illness, he received support for quite a long time from the Saint Boniface Society, of which he was a member.

The great respect in which the deceased was held, was demonstrated at his funeral on Saturday morning. Taking part were: the Municipal Band, playing funeral marches at the head of the procession; the Saint Boniface Society; the A.O.U.W.; Royal Arcanum; the city council and the fire department, which surround-ed the hearse and carried the coffin. At the service in the Catholic church, a heartfelt, moving German address was given by Very Rev. P.W. Klöpfer, a school-mate of the deceased, and an English sermon by the Very Rev. P. J. Kosinski, about the teachings on purgatory, with special application to the death of the much-loved father and respected citizen, George Huck. May he rest in peace!
