John Barbour, Furniture and Undertaking, North Water Street - Among the old established business houses in Galt worthy of particular mention is the well-known furniture house of Mr. John Barbour, who is located on North Water Street. This business was established in 1856, and has enjoyed a good share of the public patronage during the past years. He is a manufacturer of and dealer in all kinds of furniture, spring and hair mattresses, etc; and he makes a specialty of undertaking, taking entire charge of all funerals that may be placed in his care, and supplying all the necessary articles. He has a first-class hearse, and is eminently qualified for that important and delicate business, being considerate towards bereaved friends, and being a gentleman of rare ability. The premises he occupies are 30 x 90 feet in dimensions and two stories in height. He gives employment to four skillful workmen. He uses an eight-horse power engine for running his machinery, and his business extends throughout town and country. Mr. Barbour is a native of Scotland, and was chief of the volunteer fire brigade in this town for ten years, and was presented with a beautiful service of silver upon leaving that office. He has also served for twenty years in the Board of Trustees of the common schools. He is a gentleman highly esteemed and honored in the community.

    __________________________

A very familiar face has passed away from amongst us. Since 1843, the subject of this obituary has been associated with the life of Galt and was one of its best known citizens. For the past two or three years Mr. Barbour has failed in health, but some months ago an abscess or cancer formed in his body and since then he has been very largely confined to his bed. Monday evening this is supposed to have broken, and after great suffering he passed away about 5 o'clock the next morning.

Mr. Barbour was born in Lochwinnoch, Scotland, and left there when only 19 years of age. After coming to America he worked for some time in New York, Rochester and Hamilton coming to Galt in 1843. After his arrival here he worked for some time for the late Alexander Adair, as a carpenter, there being no necessity for a cabinet maker in Galt in those days. Spending some time in this way, eventually Mr. Barbour opened a cabinet making and undertaking shop and this he continued until his death. He had but little ambition in a municipal sense, although he accepted the position of School Trustee and ably performed his duties for many years. He was for 15 years Chief of Galt Fire Brigade and also for many years was a Director of Galt Mechanics Institute.

Mr. Barbour was thrice married, and leaves as issue, Mr. Wm. Barbour, of Chicago; Mrs. R. S. Hood, Mrs. Hugh A. Cant, Mr. Robt. Barbour, Mr. John Barbour and his daughters Misses Annie, Mary and Fannie. For over thirty years Mr. Barbour was a leading Mason, and on more than one occasion was Worshipful Master of Alma Lodge. He was a well-informed, cheerful, entertaining companion and in the days of the Ramores, Wagstaffs, the late John Scott, and our old friends the Dalglfeahs, was one of the leading spirits of that coterie of hard Scotch intellect, pawky jokes, and heavy argument. His fund of humor he retained to the last and during his long illness was cheerful and resigned.

His funeral, conducted with Masonic honors, took place yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and was very largely attended by that body and our townspeople generally.
