    Notes:

    Death of Mr. James Jaffray

This well-known old resident of Galt - uncle of the proprietors of this journal - expired at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. John Bittmann, on Monday morning last. Although for several years past the frailties of age had prevented the deceased from following his usual avocation, the end came rather suddenly at last. He was about the house on Saturday, apparently as well as usual, but on his daughter going to his room on Sabbath morning she was shocked to find him unconscious. Medical aid was promptly on hand, but nature was fairly worn out and he gradually sank until about 3 o'clock on Monday morning, when he calmly passed to his rest.

Mr. Jaffray was a native of Stirling, Scotland, but in early life went to Berwick-on-Tweed, where for many years he carried on an extensive business as a book seller. In 1853 he came out to Canada, arriving in Galt in August of that year. Shortly after arriving he commenced the book-binding business in connection with this office, which he carried on until, as previously stated, the frailties of age a few years ago compelled him to lay all work aside.

Mr. Jaffray was a typical Scotchman of the old school - full of the traditions and history of his native land, and replete with ever green memories of his youthful days. He leaves two daughters to mourn him - Mrs. John Bitmann, of Galt, and Mrs. Rutherford, of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was in the 82nd year of his age at the time of his death, and was the last representative of a family of thirteen.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the attendance being large. The deceased having been a member of the Masonic Society, the brethren turned out in full force, the funeral being conducted according to the rites of that ancient and honorable order; while Rev. Canon Hincks, of Trinity Church, conducted the services at the church and the grave.
