    Notes:

Vincent Douglass had been born about 1791 or 1797. He and his wife, Martha, and their children, Charles, Maria, Vincent Jr. and Agnes, had been born into slavery in Virginia. Sometime after the birth of Agnes in 1838, the Douglass family escaped and fled to Canada. In 1843 the family lived on fifty acres on lot 21, concession 14, in Wellesley Township, where another son, Albert, was born the following year. The Douglass family later moved to a farm on lot 14, concession 2, in Peel Township.

On October 26,1877, Vincent Douglass died of unknown causes. The terms of his will stated that after all debts and funeral expenses had been paid, his beloved wife Martha was to receive $50 and the use of their home and furnishings. His son, Albert, inherited the family farm with the condition that he support his mother until her death, which occurred on April 3, 1897. Two other sons, Charles and Thomas, each received $25.

Albert Douglass married Mary Ann Lee on August 11,1870, in Peel Township. The Reverend Samuel H. Brown performed the ceremony, witnessed by Henry Frances and Mary Ann Stewart. Mary Ann Lee Douglass had been born in Brantford on June 15, 1850. Her father, William Barnard Lee, had been born in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1812 and was the son of Peter Lee, who had served in the Corps of Colour during the War of 1812. Her mother, Eleanor Jane Smith, was from County Cork, Ireland. When Mary Ann Lee was just a young girl, her parents divorced. Her father moved to Artemesia Township in Grey County where he married Roselia Adams and they had one son, William Bernard Lee, Jr

Albert and Mary Ann Douglass had twenty-one children, but only seven survived to adulthood. Charles Douglass, the oldest son of Vincent and Martha Douglass, in 1861 lived in Artemesia Township, Grey County, with his wife, Mary. However, by 1871 he was a widower and had returned to his parents' home with his two daughters, Margaret and Levina. Douglass married his second wife, Isabella Johnston, and the couple had at least one child, Albert. Just two days before Christmas in 1879, Douglass became a widower for the second time when his wife Isabella died. By 1901, Douglass had returned to Grey County where he lived near Collingwood with his daughter Effie, his son-in-law, George Cooper and their twelve-year-old son, Edward. His son, Albert, also lived in Grey County and on December 28,1904, he married Elizabeth Morton in the Owen Sound Methodist Church. Charles Douglass died in Collingwood at age 78 on January 14,1912. Many of his descendants still live in Grey County today.
