Though Mr. Edward Pfaff may not as he puts it "do so much of it" the patrons of his barber shop can get anything in the tonsorial line that they can get anywhere else. This means that he has a thoroughly up-to-date barber shop in every respect and that it has all the facilities afforded by larger shops in larger towns. It is a three-chair shop and the leader in New Hamburg. Mr. Pfaff has been over seven years in business and is largely patronized, he and an assistant being kept busy. He keeps his shop scrupulously neat and gives close attention to business. He is well liked personally, a factor which draws trade no less than his good work. He carries a good line of tobaccos and cigars.

Edward Pfaff

A well-known New Hamburg resident, Edward Pfaff, 262 Jacob St., died on Monday at Avoncrest Hospital, Stratford, at the age of 91 Mr. Pfaff had been a patient at the hospital for the past eight weeks

Born in Woolwich Township, the deceased has been barbering for 70 years, and spent 66 years as a barber in New Hamburg

He was a member of St Peter's Lutheran Church, having been a member of the church council and was on the board of the New Hamburg cemetery for a number of years. Mr. Pfaff was president of the New Hamburg Turf Club for 17 years and was a charter member and honorary life member of the town's Board of Trade.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pfaff, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Lilly Hueglin, in 1964.

Surviving are three sons, Reginald, Orville and Clare, all of New Hamburg; one daughter, Miss Audrey, Kitchener; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The body is resting at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 3 p m. today.

Interment will take place in Riverside cemetery, New Hamburg

Mrs. Edward Pfaff - by Record Staff Writer

NEW HAMBURG - Mrs. Edward Pfaff, 89, of Jacob St., died Saturday at K-W Hospital after a lengthly (sic) illness. She was born in Waterloo. The former Lillie Hueglin, she was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, a life member of St. Peter's Sisterhood and an honorary member of New Hamburg Women's Institute. Surviving beside her husband, to whom she was married July 23, 1902, are three sons, Reginald, Orville and Clare of New Hamburg; a daughter, Audrey of London; two sisters, Christine Hueglin and Mrs. Fred (Regina) McAvoy, both of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home until noon Tuesday when removal will be made to St. Peter's Church for service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

The Mill Fire

Early on the warm August 8 evening in 1902, while local residents were enjoying a variety program staged by a Chautauqua group at the local school yard, cries of "fire" and the sounding of the town bell could be heard to signal for help to fight a blaze.

Little Elena Betzner, whose father, Isaac, had been head miller at the local flour mill, had been taken to the evening program to mark her ninth birthday day.

Soon a column of thick smoke arose over the downtown area. This was a spectacular fire, for it was at the local flour and grist mill in the heart of the village. The large three-storey frame building was soon engulfed in flames and in a short time was razed to the ground. This was the mill built by William Scott in 1848, a half century before. It had a colourful history, having passed through the hands of a succession of owners and operators, and had been extensively damaged in the 1889 boiler explosion.

The economic loss was to affect not only the owners and employees but also the community as well, for it drew farmers and their families for miles around who shopped and transacted business in town as well as at the mill.

Mrs. Edward Pfaff, bride of New Hamburg's newest barber, who had recently moved to town, stood at the window of the couple's temporary home in the Queen's Hotel, (now 73-77 Peel Street) just a hundred meters from the mill. She watched with a mixture of apprehension and awe at the scene as flames and smoke billowed into the air, carrying sparks and embers over the buildings nearby.

Embers and burning shingles settled on nearby roofs, some of which began to smoulder. Residents and building occupants busily carried pails of water to douse flames. New Hamburg's steam-powered fire engine Chugged valiantly, but to little avail. The frame building was doomed, and it burned to the foundation. The loss of the mill would have a definite impact on its patrons and the economy of the village as well.

Mr. Geo. Hollinger, an old resident of Elmira, passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Charles Klinck, on Sunday morning, November 13th, at the advanced age of 83 years, 2 months and 28 days. Mr. Hollinger was born in Germany and emigrated to America when 19 years of age. He settled in Woolwich township near Heidelberg where he followed the trade of cooper. In 1837 he was married to Margaret Brechbiebl. He afterwards purchased a farm near Elmira. Here his first wife died. He was again married to Mrs. Breimer of Waterloo who predeceased him about two years ago. Deceased was a staunch member of the Lutheran church and a man of sterling integrity. He possessed great powers of endurance and perseverance. He leaves a family of four children, viz: Louis Hollinger, of Wallace; Mrs. Charles Klinck, Mrs. D. Pfaff and Mrs. B. Wahl of Elmira.

King Street, Kitchener

Eby to Cedar Street

On the corner a one and one-half story frame building, lengthwise with King Street, occupied by Adam Jaeckel as a bakery. Jaeckel had a high reputation as a baker and guarded the secret of his process. The story is that he had his bake-oven in the basement of the building, where in the evening he would set dough for about forty loaves of bread. He would then put the cover on the baking trough and sleep on it. When the dough would rise sufficiently, about three or four o'clock in the morning, it would wake him. He would then proceed with his baking and later go fishing, of which he was very fond. Later on this building, painted drab, was used by Town Constable Joachim.

A garden.

A one and one-half story building lengthwise with King Street occupied by John Heller in 1843 as a jewelry and watchmaking shop.

Residence occupied by Philip Moogk, as cabinetmaker and carpenter.

A two story frame building with gable facing King Street, occupied by Gottlieb Ratliman, a tailor. The same building was used 1850-55 as a tavern by a Mr. Jahn, Bandmaster Kayser occupied one end of the building after 1864. Kayser also had a saloon and beer garden, the latter a place of general entertainment during the summer months, with concerts, dances, etc.
