    GLEBE, Esther Ruth

With quiet grace peacefully in the presence of her family, at Chateau Gardens in London on December 13, 2012, Esther Ruth Glebe passed away in her 92nd year. Devoted wife and best friend of the late Oliver George Glebe. Remembered with treasured love by her daughter, Judi Barker and her husband Grant and by her grandchildren, Sarah Barker-Brown and her husband Campbell Brown of Louisville, Kentucky and Laura Kennedy and her husband Michael Kennedy of Toronto, Ontario to whom she was affectionately known as “Nana“. Dear great grandmother to Madison and Chandler Brown and Charlie and Sam Kennedy. Predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Miller and Helen Kraehling and survived by her brother Ralph Berdux of Stratford, her sister, Norma Peterson and her husband Gil of Huntsville, her sister Kay Lichty and her husband Norm of Grand Bend and by many nieces and nephews. The most treasured aspect of her life was her family. Her kind and fun loving spirit, unwavering support, generosity, compassion and constant devotion were Mom's gifts to all of us through her lifetime. Mom also taught us about style as evident in her fashionable dress, the way she decorated her house and even to the way she beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts. As a resident of Kitchener, Mom was a member of the Westmount Golf and Country Club, the Canadian Cancer Society - Kitchener-Waterloo Branch, a life member of the Garden Club of Kitchener-Waterloo, where she won many awards, for her flower arrangements and garden designs and as well a long time member and Sunday school teacher, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nicholls and all the staff and caregivers of Magnolia Unit within Chateau Gardens. Your compassion and attention to Esther's care during the last nine years of her life are profoundly appreciated. A private family funeral will be held at RATZ-BECHTEL FUNERAL HOME, 621 King Street West, Kitchener on December 22, 2012 with interment to follow at Memory Gardens, Breslau.

    Notes:

    Ferdinand Berdux.

This gentleman has been identified with the business interests of Wellesley village nearly all his life, and was for many years one of the prominent and well known hotel keepers of Waterloo county, a reputation he acquired in his management of the Royal Hotel, in which capacity he was occupied for his father years before the house came into his own possession. He was born in Philipsburg in 1849, his father, Peter Berdux, being one of the oldest settlers in this section, and who departed this life at the advanced age of eighty-two years, Dec. 30, 1897. The subject of this sketch was married in 1874 to Miss Catharine, daughter of John Roeder, who died the day following the death of Mr. Berdux's father. Mr. Berdux took charge of the Royal on his own account in 1875, and conducted it with good success until about eight years ago, when he leased the house in order to devote his time to the butchering business. He was at one time a director and president of the Wellesley Agricultural Association, but when the Society became established in Wellesley village he retired from it in an official way, though he always strove to have it located here. While he was highly successful as a hotel man, he is receiving a very encouraging patronage it his present business. His aim is always to supply his customers with good meat. His facilities for keeping his meats in the best condition possible in the hot weather season is ample, the refrigerator being one of the best for that purpose that the writer has yet inspected. He also sells at wholesale, his market extending to Waterloo and Berlin. It is now the intention of Mr. Berdux to take in his son Philip, now twenty-two years of age, as a partner.

    Royal Hotel

This well known house was built in 1855 by Peter Smith. His brother Louis was its proprietor for two years, after which it was occupied by one Walker. In 1860 it became the property of the late Peter Berdux, who conducted it for a period of fifteen years. It was then handed over to his son Ferdinand who continued to be its landlord and proprietor until last February when he leased it to its present occupant, Mr. Philip Hasenpflug The latter is yet a young man, but has good promise of being a successful hotel man. Mr. Hasenpflug was born in West Montrose on June 17, 1873 He was reared on the farm and at the age of eighteen years had his first experience in hotel life, commencing with Thomas O'Dounel at Elmira, July 17, 1891. Here he remained about five months and then went to Waterloo where he was for some time engaged in Doersam's hotel, now known as the City Hotel. From the latter he went to the Alexander House where he remained four years. After this he was employed at Huether's hotel for ten months. Subsequently he went to Berlin for a short time. While there he received a call to accept a position in the Market Hotel, Galt, but having already concluded to go into business on his own hook he declined and came to Wellesley village. Mr. Hasenpflug is a son of John George Hasenpflug, who was for many years employed by Hon. E. W. B. Snider at German Mills. The subject of this sketch was married April 26, 1897, to Miss Anna, daughter of Mr. Thomas Roesch, formerly engaged in the milling business in Waterloo. They have one child. The Royal under Mr. Hasenpflug's management is enjoying its old time patronage, having its share of the commercial trade. For a hotel keeper he is among the exceptions, being temperate in his habits and by his general personal appearance the stranger would be led to believe that he indulged at all in intoxicants He keeps strict order, and his house is in every particular prepared to afford comfortable accommodations for the travelling public
