Death of a Very Old Resident of Galt

By the death of Mr. John Sproat, in his 92nd year, Galt has lost one of its very oldest residents. Mr. Sproat came to this section about 1834, and almost without a break has resided here. He was an active man in his younger days and laid by sufficient to maintain him in comfort in his old age. Although a cheery, pushing man for many years, he took but little part in public life, preferring apparently, rather to criticize than to be criticized. Mr. Sproat was thrice married, all his wives having predeceased him. He leaves no children, his family by his first wife having died young. He had outlived the generation n which most of his active life was spent. Up to a few years ago he enjoyed the best of health, but the frailties of age gradually overtook him and for some years he has failed very much.

From a friend we learn that Mr. Sproat was born in Ankrem, near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland, and came to Canada with his brother-in-aw the late Geo. Meikle. Mr. Sproat was then a widower.

His funeral will take place from his late residence, Wellington Street, at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
