    Death of Mr. Jared Dryden

We regret to state that this well-known resident of North Dumfries passed away very unexpectedly on Tuesday morning last. Mr. Dryden was in town, we have been informed, on Saturday, and although then not feeling well, nothing serious was anticipated. On Sunday he became much worse, and gradually sank until Tuesday morning, when death relieved him from his sufferings. He was 40 years old the day of his death. Mr. Dryden was the eldest son of Mr. James Dryden, of North Dumfries. The family has suffered severely from sickness this summer, diphtheria and other diseases having visited them and Mrs. Asa Dryden having suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which, even yet, she has but partially recovered. Mr. Jared Dryden was a widower and leaves three children. We regret to learn that his brother, who has achieved a position as a stenographer and as a writer, has been laid up for quite a time with a disease of the arm, and, while somewhat better, anticipates being unable to accept any position for some time.

    Notes:

DEATH OF MRS. JAMES DRYDEN - Ever since her paralytic seizure, somewhere about a year ago, the health of this long resident of North Dumfries, and more recently of Galt, has sensibly declined, and although at last the end came somewhat unexpectedly, it was obvious for months that it could not be long delayed. Quietly and resignedly she passed away on Monday morning last, having by but four months, entered her 61st year. Mrs. Dryden was a daughter of the late Jared Swan, her sister, Mrs. Andrew Turnbull, being now, we believe, the only surviving member of that family. Mrs. Dryden leaves a husband and nine children, her eldest son, Jared, it will be remembered, dying last year. In all the walks of life the deceased lady discharged her duty faithfully and uprightly and was beloved by all who knew her. Of her family two are now in Manitoba and Mr. James Dryden, Jr., will soon remove there, having accepted the position of stenographer to Lieut.-Governor Schultz. Her daughters are Mrs. Joseph Wrigley and Mrs. John Taylor, with four residing with their aged and bereaved father in Galt.

    Notes:

MR. WILLIAM STRUTHERS, a man kind and friendly, delighting in a quiet conversation on topics of more than temporary interest, and having no sympathy with anything that was merely for show. The blood of his ancestors ran in his veins, he came from a good old stock. His grandfather was a Covenanter, hunted by Claverhouse, and on one occasion hidden from the eyes of his soldiers by his comrades in the harvest field causing him to lie down in a furrow, where they covered him over with the cut wheat, so that he escaped. "He was brought up in the strictest way as a Christian and as a Presbyterian." In 1840 he married Mary Gilchrist, who was born on the Stockwell farm near Carhike in the year 1819.

Her father was educated under the late Dr. Owen and was one of the principal men in the church with which he was connected. Having a large family, and being the owner of a large farm, he required many servants to overtake the work that was to be done. These had all to learn the Shorter Catechism, and to repeat the answers to the questions in turn every Sabbath evening ; and every morning even in the busiest times all had to he present at family worship. On the Sabbath day no one was allowed to mention any secular affair because it was the Lord s Day. That direction in Isaiah 58. 13, 14 was carried out to the letter. There is in possession of the family still a Bible which was given as a wedding present to their great grandmother, Margaret Warnock, in the year 1770.

Mr. Struthers was born near Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1817. He came with Mrs. Struthers to Canada in 1849, with their three children, Mary, Archibald and William two in addition to these had been born to them, but they died in infancy. Mr. Struthers engaged with the Hon. David Christie for one year, and at that time was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Brantford. The following year, 1850, he purchased a farm four and a half miles from Ayr on Sprague's Road. He united with what is now Stanley Street Church and remained a member of it for thirty-five years. Here, too, all the members of the family save one, being nine in all, made profession of their faith in Christ: the highest ambition of the parents being the spiritual welfare of their children. Great attention was paid to this. Mrs. Struthers went over the Sunday School lessons with the children, so that they would be fitted to profit by it when it was taught. She assisted them, too, in the work of proving a doctrine, and also in writing an essay on some subject in connection with the lesson of the Sunday School.

Though they had to walk to church they were regularly in their place. The older members remained to the Sabbath School, which was held after service and did not get home till four o clock, which made a long day, especially for children. Mrs. Struthers being asked on one occasion by her minister, "How it was that she was so successful in getting all her family to remain in the Sunday School until they were grown up? "made answer: "They were never consulted." It was the law of the house; and no one ever thought of doing otherwise.

In 1886 Mr. and Mrs. Struthers retired from the cares and toils of the farm and came into Galt Some of the members of the family had preceded them. On their settling here the parents and three of the children united with the Central Church. And in August of the same year Mrs. Struthers passed to her reward. She was a large-minded and large-hearted woman. Her memory was well stored with precious truth and was remarkably tenacious. She was highly intelligent and of large experience and left her mark on the religious character of her children, who unite in calling her blessed. In 1887 Archibald, the eldest son, died also. In 1889 Mr. Struthers was called home. He was one who embodied in his quiet, comely, circumspect life the truth of the Gospel. He was devoted to his children, and he also took a large and living interest in the church and its work.

To him, as to the religious Scot everywhere, the Church and the Sabbath and the services of the house of God were central; controlling all the rest of life, and giving to it color and character and consistency. He left his impress on the hearts of all who came into close contact with him as a kind, generous, true friend, and made his children feel that he was a loving father.

    ______________

Seeking rest after a life of industry, many of those who come amongst us from the neighboring Townships are not permitted to long enjoy it. Saturday last, Mrs. Wm. Struthers, who, with her husband came to Galt to enjoy the rest which herself and husband had so well earned, was called away. For some time she had been in indifferent health, so that her death was not unexpected. She was a native of Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and came to this country about 1845, being in her 68th year at the time of her death. Her funeral was very largely attended by old friends and acquaintances from the Township of Dumfries.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. Jared Swan - Mr. Jared Swan, long a resident of Dumfries, close to Galt, died on Sunday night last. Mr. Swan came to Dumfries in the year 1832. He was born in Roxboroughshire, Scotland, and was married before he emigrated. At the time of his death he was aged 80 years and 9 months. He was a man very much respected, and his body was followed to the grave by a very large number of friends and acquaintances. One singular coincidence in connection with this death is that while in Scotland he and the late Mr. Jas. Clarke, of Dumfries, were married and lived in the same house. They emigrated to Canada with their wives and families, and now lie in graves side by side in Galt Cemetery.

Together with her husband and two daughters she emigrated to Canada in 1832 and located on the property one mile south of Galt and known as the "Swan estate,", on which she continued to reside until the decease of her husband in 1877. The entire life of the aged couple was spent on this rustic homestead. Though quiet and uneventful their life was worthy, and into which nothing penetrated, which they could avoid, to mar its purity. In religious matters they were hearty sympathizers, and as long as they were able, attended services of the Free Church. Their life fully exemplified the true Christian ideal of standing firm and steadfast to the end. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Swan has resided with her daughters Mrs. Andrew Turnbull, of Mill creek, and Mrs. Jas. Dryden, of West Dumfries. For two or three years back that most dreaded disease, cancer, was working its slow but most certain consequences, having a seat in her left side, and which caused her great sufferings in her ripe old age. For some months back the cancer had taken its deadly hold on her system, and thence she knew no rest. Despite her agonizing suffering she held out with a fortitude surprising, until at length nature asserted itself and ended her earthly career. The funeral, which took place on Saturday forenoon last, was well attended by sorrowing relatives and acquaintances, testifying their respect for the deceased, as one of Dumfries' first pioneers. Rev. J. K. Smith officiated at the funeral. The following pall-bearers laid the remains of their lamented grandmother in the grave, viz: - Messrs. Andrew Turnbull, Jared Turnbull, Thomas Turnbull, James Dryden, J. Wrigley, and P. Maclellan. The deceased has yet a sister living in Beverly at the advanced age of ninety-two years. - Com.
