The late Erastus N. Hawke, whose death took place on Thursday

The late Erastus N. Hawke, whose death took place on Thursday last, was born in Hawkesville and, resided on a farm at that place until twelve years ago, when the family removed to Waterloo, where he was engaged as an agent of the Massey-Harris Co. He was well known and highly respected throughout this vicinity and had attained the age of 56 years 5 months and 3 days.

A wife and a family of eight children, five daughters and three sons, survive. The funeral was held on Monday at 12 o'clock from the residence where service was held, thence to Hawkesville cemetery for burial.

The late Mr. Hawke was a highly respected citizen, and by his genial disposition and honest and fair treatment he had built up a very lucrative business in this district for the Massey-Harris Co. It was no unusual thing to see from 75 to 100 farmers' teams each bearing a load of Massey Harris implements, when spring supply of machinery was delivered at Waterloo. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family of the deceased in this, their hour of sore bereavement. - Citizen

    Notes:

    Sad Death

We very much regret to say that Mr. Wm. Hawk, of it seems most natural to say - Hawksville, sank from the effects of the operation performed on him in Toronto Hospital, dying on Friday last. The deceased gentleman has always occupied a prominent position in the locality in which he lived, and was widely known throughout the county as an extensive farmer and dealer in cattle. He had not the taste for municipal life that his brother, the late John Hawk, had, and never came forward in that respect, but he was of the same sterling, upright character as his brothers and was universally respected. For many years he was a Director of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company, holding that position when he was so suddenly called away. There never was a time, in the memory of our older residents, when the Hawk family did not occupy responsible position in this County, and it is painful to think that the hand of death is being laid on their broad shoulders and kindly hearts, and that one after another is dropping away from amongst us.

Mr. Hawk leaves a large family, of whom Dr. Hawk, of Galt, and Dr. Ben Hawk, of Spokane Falls, Washington Territory, are sons. His remains were removed to his late residence, near Hawksville, on Saturday, and were interred there on Monday afternoon, a very large attendance of his old friends and acquaintances testifying their respect by accompanying them to their last resting place.

    Notes:

It is worthy of notice that the first distinct influx of settlers into this township, came in or about the year 1825, and most of those settled in this southeast quarter of the township. Among the names of settlers entering or taking up lands before this period, not already mentioned, we find that of John Connor (1822) who took up lot 19, con. I, and that of William Walker, (1821) on lot 15, con. I.

The Hawke family were amongst the earliest settlers in this south- east corner of the township. Benjamin Hawke, the head of the family, came to Yonge Street from Pennsylvania about the year 1811, his wife being a sister of Samuel Lount, who was executed after the Rebellion. During the war of 1812-15, Mr. Hawke was the contractor for hauling the cannons and supplies passing through Holland Landing, and across the portage from the Head of Kempenfeldt Bay to the Nottawasaga River. His sons, along with himself, settled in King and Tecumseth Townships in the twenties, when the parts around Lloydtown and Schomberg were opening for settlement. He was one of the candidates to represent the County of Simcoe at the election for the Assembly in 1834, but was not successful. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1843. He was lame, and in his day had a full share of the rugged experiences of frontier and pioneer life. Periphen Hawke was taken prisoner during the Rebellion disturbances of 1837, and, after five months' imprisonment, was pardoned, according to the list of persons arrested appearing in Lindsay's Life of W. L. Mackenzie. And it is said that Gabriel Hawke, of Tecumseth, was also taken prisoner during the Rebellion, although his name does not appear in that list. Gabriel was a large, powerful man, and well-known in the early days of the Township of Tecumseth. Some part of the Hawke family moved to the Township of Wellesley, County of Waterloo, where the village of Hawkesville is named after them.
