A Fatal Accident August C.. Prestien, of Hespeler Killed on the G.P. & H.R'y

He attempts to Cross From the Motor to the Trailer, and Falls Between -
The Trailer Runs Over Him, Inflicting Terrible Injuries -
He Lives for Half an Hour -
    An Inquest Held -
    No Blame Attached to Anyone

The first fatal accident on the G.P. & H. Ry., occurred on Saturday evening, shortly after seven o'clock, when Mr. August C. Prestien, a well-known and respected resident of Hespeler, was run over and killed by a car. Mr. Prestien had been in Galt on business and took the car which left here shortly before seven o'clock, for home. The car was in charge of Conductor Chamberlain and Motorman Elvidge, with Brakeman Henderson on the Trailer. The deceased was standing on the back platform of the motor, and shortly after leaving Preston, and when near Ferguson and Pattison's mill, he noticed a friend - Mr. C. McWilliam, of Galt, sitting on the front seat of the trailer. He reached over and shook hands with him and said he would come over on the trailer. He at once took hold of the rail to swing himself to the other car; but he evidently misjudged the distance, as he fell between the motor and trailer, the latter going over him and cutting off both legs - one at the ankle and the other near the thigh - besides injuring him internally. The car was immediately stopped, and every attention given the injured man. A surgeon was telephoned for, but his services were of no avail, as the unfortunate man died in about half an hour after receiving the injury. On account of a trailer being off the track, the body was taken back to the undertaker's at Preston, where it was carefully attended to, and taken to Hespeler later in the evening.

The deceased was aged 33 years, and leaves a widow and four small children, the eldest being only seven years of age. The sad accident cast a gloom over the entire village, the deceased being one of the best known and respected business men of the place. He was a contractor, being in partnership with his brother, Herman Prestien, in the building business. He was a past master of the A.O.U.W.

The funeral took place on Monday, to Hespeler cemetery, and was very largely attended.
