Samuel Shoemaker, a young man belonging to this town, died at his father's house early Thursday morning. He took the train to Berlin on Saturday afternoon and though everything was done for him his life could not be saved. Elmira Signet 13 July 1893 p. 8, col. 3-4

On March 25th 1845, he was again married to Rebecca Rudy who was born October 29th, 1825. Although deprived of first class school privileges and his time devoted to constant labor on his father's farm, his desire for information made him seek opportunities for acquiring knowledge. This, added to his natural abilities, gave Mr. Shantz great success in acquiring information on all topics. His stock of knowledge and experience made him a wise counsellor and a judicious adviser; and on may occasions, both in public and private interests, his counsel was sought and obtained. After his first marriage he took charge of his own farm, about three miles west of Berlin, and commenced clearing away the huge forest and erected the necessary buildings thereon. In due time he was the possessor of one of the finest farms on the Petersburg Road. Here he resided until his death which took place January 18th, 1895. His family consisted of twenty-two children, ten of whom were born unto his first wife"

    Historic Building:
This large, two storey fieldstone farmhouse was built by Daniel Rudy in 1847. The builder carved his name and the date of construction on one half of a grindstone and embedded it in the second storey front wall to the right of the door. Like many early mennonite houses it is built in the plain Georgian style and faces south.
The house retains many of its early features. Some of the original small-paned twelve-over-eight windows remain. A number of other windows are six-over-six panes. It also has small attic windows as well as a bell in a cupola which was rung to call the men in from the fields. In the 1870's, a brick doddy house was added (for the parents when the son took over the farm), the porch, the two-over-two paned windowsand the board and batten summer kitchen may also have been added at this time. Colourful granite stones with large corner blocks give the house a pleasant patchwork-quilt appearance. Custom was to plaster the stone work under the front verandah.
All facades of this historical "rural" Waterloo home were recognized in the designation of the structure as a Heritage Landmark.1a
