Joseph Erb, "the fourth son of John and Magdalena (Schrantz) Erb, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, March 30th, 1800. He came to Canada in 1805 with his parents who settled where now Preston is situated. Here Mr. Erb was raised and after arriving of age he conducted his father's business which then consisted of the grist mill, saw mill, distillery, general store, besides a large farm of nearly 500 acres of land. On December 11th, 1827, he was married to Mary, daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Clemens) Kolb. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, near Skippack, August 4th, 1804, and came to Canada with her parents in 1819. She is still living on the old Erb place. Her residence is situated within sixty feet from where old John Erb had erected his first log cabin when coming to Canada in 1805. He died October 15th, 1885. To them was born a family of ten children"

Joseph Erb died in Preston at the age of 85 years and 6 months. He came to Canada from Pennasylvania with his parents when only a few years old, and has lived ever since in Preston. He is survived by his widow, 6 sons and 1 daughter, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At his burial service on Sunday at Hegy's meeting-house, a great many mourners from near and far were congregated^.

ERB.-- On the 15th of October, in Waterloo County, Ontario, Joseph Erb, aged 85 years, 6 months and 15 days. He was taken last winter with kidney disease, but during the summer he was again able to walk out. During the last few weeks however he suffered a good deal, but bore it all with patience. He leaves a widow and seven children. He was buried at Hagy's Meeting-house on the 18th, followed to the grave by many people. Services by J. Woolner and Moses Erb.

ERB - On Tuesday March 13, 1900, at her home in Preston, Ontario, of the infirmities of old age, Sister Mary Kolb, relict of the late Bro. Joseph Erb. She was the daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Clemens) Kolb and was born near Skippack, Montgomery Co., Pa., on the 4th of August 1804. In 1819 she came with her parents to Canada, when what is now known as Waterloo Co. was nearly all forest land. On the 11th of Dec. 1827 she was married to Joseph Erb who died Oct. 15th, 1885. To them were born eight sons and two daughters of whom five sons and one daughter survive her. With her husband who as a miller was widely known for his generosity she shared the trials and hardships of pioneer life as a true helpmeet, and the labors of their hands were greatly blessed. She enjoyed reasonably good health until about three years ago she fell on the floor dislocating her hip, since which time she was unable to walk. Thus the feet that through a long life had been so busy in household duties and missions of love and charity were forced to rest and she had to pass her days in her chair, not being able to get in or out of bed alone. Her daughter, Sister Lena Erb, who is unmarried and lives at home, attended to her aged mother's wants with true filial devotion for three years, being assisted by her two brothers Cyrus and Joseph, both living in Preston. Deceased suffered but little pain during the last year of her life, yet she was patiently waiting for the time of her departure to the land where so many of her loved ones had already gone. Her wish that she might just fall asleep, never to wake again in this world, was granted, and loving watchers did not know that she was gone until they came to look after her, when they found nothing but the cold clay; the longing soul, so long imprisoned in its frail earthly tenement, had gone home to God. The burial took place at the Hagey M. H. near Preston on the 16th. Funeral services by Jacob Woolner in German from Heb. 13: 14 and by Noah Stauffer in English from Isa. 58: 8. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church and reached the age of 91 years, 7 months and 9 days.

John Erb, "the third son of Christian and Maria (Scherch) Erb, was born December 8th, 1764, and was married to Magdalena Schrantz who was born in June, 1770. In 1805 he, in company with his wife and family, William Corwell, Henry Kraft and family, Peter Hammacher and family, Matthias Scheirich and family, Abraham Stauffer and family, and other families moved to Canada and settled in the township and county of Waterloo. John Erb settled on the Speed River about 200 rods from where now Erb's Mill, of Preston, stands. He proved to be the founder of Preston. In 1806 Mr. Erb erected his saw mill. Before this time no sawed lumber could be obtained nearer than Toronto or Niagara. A year thereafter (1807) he erected his grist mill which were rebuilt by their son, Joseph, in 1834. In a very short time Preston proved to be quite a business centre. Here he died September 2nd, 1832. His wife died June 2nd, 1826. They had a family of nine children"

Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church


The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.

Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.

Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.

Jacob Kolb, "was born April 17th, 1781. When he was a young boy his father died and then he was adopted by his uncle, Henry Kolb, who raised him, and after leaving school he served his apprenticeship as a gunsmith, which trade he followed even to the last years of his life. (Many of the old guns and rifles in this county are the make of old Mr. Kolb) In 1803 he was married to Catharine, daughter of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens. She was born May 21st, 1782, and died January 25th, 1869. After their marriage they resided in Hilltown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, for quite a number of years where he carried on a well-paying business at his trade. In 1819 or maybe a year or so later, they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, about a mile below Preston, towards Galt. Here they resided until 1826 when they settled on the west bank of the Grand River, opposite Breslau, on the farm now owned by their grandson, Joseph Kolb. When a comparatively young man he was ordained as a deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Cressman field of labor. He died January 3rd, 1869. To them was born a family of three sons and three daughters"

Jacob Kolb contructed this house now demolished some time after 1981. It started out as a small log house, later a room the full length of the house was added and a new roof applied. Logs were covered with frame and the hold house was stuccoed.

She was born December 11th, 1774, and died October 13th, 1866. In 1802 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near the village of Blair where he died. After his death the mother had her home with her son David who resided near Roseville where she died. They had a family of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy and are buried at Blair. There were three Johns, the first died, aged nearly nine years; the second was born a few weeks after the decease of the first; and after second's decease they named a third one John."

I will that my beloved wife Nancy shall have to live in the house which we now occupy during her natural life, and my son David Bricker shall keep a cow for my wife Nancy during her life, which cow he shall in every respect keep in the same manner as he keeps his own cows. I also give and bequeath unto my wife during her life, all my household furniture which I may be possessed of at my decease and that my beloved wife Nancy Bricker, shall yearly and every year as long as she lives, have Twenty five pounds, and if my wife Nancy shall through sickness or otherwise happen to need more than twenty five pounds, then my Executors shall give her so much more as will suffice to keep her comfortable. I will that all the above-mentioned bequests to my said wife shall be instead of her lawful Dower. And it is my will that the real and person property together with the five hundred dollars, together with all I have heretofore given and paid to my eldest son Peter Bricker, shall be taken, and the same really is, the whole share of my said son Peter Bricker's heirship by me bequeathed to him out of my real and personal estate. And it shall be considered, and it is so truly, that my said son Peter Bricker is, by his having receiv'd from me as before said, amply remunerated for which time he has worked for me, after he was twenty-one years of age. And I consider that my son David Bricker and my daughters Nancy and Susanna have their full share of heirship out of my real estate, in the land and their property which they have already received from me, for which reason I exclude them from any further share out of the same. I will that after the decease of myself and my wife, all the household furniture then belonging to my estate shall be equally divided between my three daughters, Mary, Magdalena and Lydia, except my Clock, which I have already given to my son David Bricker. I will that they residue of my real property of whatever kind or nature it may be, shall after the demise of myself and my wife be equally divided between my sons John and Abraham, and my daughters Mary, Magdalena and Lydia, share and share alike. Nevertheless I give, devise and bequeath all that legacy left to me by my brother Peter Bricker of Cumberland County, State of Pennsylvania, deceased, to be equally divided between my children now living likewise including my son Peter, and likewise the share that would have come to my daughter Nancy, if living shall be equally divided amongst all her children, share and share alike. I will that for the above legacy of my brother Peter Bricker, as said before, I have executed a power of Attorney to Wendell Bowman, Esq., and my son John Bricker to settle that part of my estate. And lastly I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my son John Bricker and Samuel B, Bowman to be the lawful executors.

In Wilmot, Waterloo Co., C. W, at the residence of Abraham Bricker, son of the deceased, on the 14th October, Nancy, wife of the late John Bricker, at the advanced age of 91 years, 10 months, and 2 days. She came from Cumberland Co., Pa., to Canada in the Spring of 1802, and lived here, respected by all, to the day of her death. She was a sister of Daniel and Jacob Erb, to whom the German Company Tract of Waterloo Township was deeded in 1865, also of Abraham Erb, the founder of Waterloo Village. She was buried on the 16th in the old burying-ground in the village of Blair. This is the oldest piece of ground selected for burying purposes in Waterloo, and she was the one who made the selection. Sixty-two years ago, while her husband was away to the States, one of her sons died, and as there was no place to bury the dead she went up to the hill, a little distance from where they were then living, and found an open little little(sic) place where she decided to bury her dead. She planted a tree at the foot of the little grave which tree is now about ten inches in diameter. She herself gave ground for a public cemetery, and for that reason wished to be buried there. Moses Bowman and Daniel Wismer officiated on the occasion. Only one or two are still living who came to Canada so early as the deceased.- Waterloo Chronicle
